PSA: For anyone following The Girl I Was, I have not abandoned the story. I have a migraine from hell, so I’ve put off posting for this week and possibly next. Don’t worry, I do have 5 chapters written already but I haven’t remotely edited them and looking at a computer screen makes me want to vomit. Lol.

But I will be posting again once I can edit. In theory I have 6 more chapters to write (11 chapters in total to post), but I think it’s gonna be longer than that. My goal is to have everything finished by the end of May.

EDIT: Not sure when next update will be. Got sick(er) after this post and then a crazy ice storm hit and haven’t had power or Internet since Friday and not expected to get it back until Sunday (April 6th)… maybe. It looks like a war zone here and we’re supposed to get another storm tomorrow. Yay.

Chapter 18 of The Girl She Was is up. Here's a snippet: “It’s almost scary how much power the queen has,” said Jackie, setting the piece back on the board.

“Mhm.” He settled beside her on the sofa and lifted her onto his lap. “And you wanna make your opponent fear your queen.”

“Like I make people fear me?”

He shook his head at her but laughed anyway.

“The queen is the most versatile piece in the game,” he explained, smoothing her hair away from her neck so he could press wet kisses to her throat. “She’s worth nine pawns, which is stronger than a rook and a bishop. And you never want to exchange a queen for a single piece other than the enemy’s queen.”

“Mmm,” moaned Jackie as he found the sweet spot just below her ear.

“Even then—” he ran the tip of his tongue along her salty skin “—it’d be suicide to do so if your king’s left vulnerable on the board.”

“So the king needs his queen?” she asked breathily, twisting her fingers into the collar of his shirt as she squirmed in his lap.

He nodded, his warm breath tickling her skin as he held her in place.

“He could very well fall without her.”

“That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to tell you about us,” she said, pulling away to look down at him. Her pupils had blown wide, revealing only a hazel-brown ring. “You need me, Steven.”

“Yeah, I do,” he whispered, his voice husky with desire.

A brand new, never-read chapter of The Girl She Was (previously titled Afterword for the older peeps in the fandom) is up. I had rough drafts for about 10 chapters written, but working on them now has ballooned some of them to epic proportions. Gonna have to do some housekeeping. Yeah, so my lofty estimate of 30 chapters might be wishful thinking on my part now. 😮‍💨

Here's a teeny snippet:

“Here,” she said, handing him a colourfully-decorated shoe box.

“What’s this?” he asked, lifting it up so it was eye-level.

Did she buy him shoes?

“I believe you called it a Steven Box,” she said, and he almost dropped the damn thing.

“Crap,” he cursed, fumbling with the box until he caught it against his chest. “Uh, thanks.”

He set it down on his chair, looking at it with some trepidation, like something sinister might jump out of it. He mentally cursed at its existence.

“Did you, uh…” he paused, directing his gaze back to Jackie. “Did you look inside it?”

“Yeah,” she said with a nod and shrug. “It didn’t really make any sense to me.” When his gaze became pointed, she looked up and shook her head defensively. “It didn’t bring back any memories, if that’s what you’re asking.”

It wasn’t—or maybe it was what he was hoping for.
