Welcome to the blog of THE CIGAR THAT FELL IN A LOVE WITH A PIPE, the new graphic novel coming from the minds and hands of writer David Camus and writer/artist Nick Abadzis. David, who lives in Paris, France is a well-known writer of historical and fantasy fiction in Europe as well as an esteemed translator. Nick Abadzis is an internationally-known and published cartoonist and author of graphic novels who lives in Brooklyn, New York. The book will be published in Spring 2014 by Self-Made Hero. Nick and David teamed up after David read Nick’s Eisner award-winning graphic novel, LAIKA. Like that book was for Nick, this new project is something of a labor of love for the two authors, a love story within a love story with fantasy elements and a couple of very recognizable guest stars from the golden age of Hollywood – Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth. #laika - The Moscow Dogcatchers (pencils, pages 56 and 57). I had a whole backstory for these guys - so much so at one point I thought about spinning it off into its own separate story. #comics #graphicnovel #graphicnovels #ya #yagraphicnovels #originalcomicart #pencils #cosmodog https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu4kn-3hPsq/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=fy2wpsmh69vy

We finally made it to the ‘Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age’ at the Science Museum today. The admission may have been a little steep for a little under an hour walkabout, however, the artifacts presented here are really rather special.
Women’s contribution to spaceflight was acknowledged. Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to fly in space was featured with key artifacts such as the ‘Vostok 6’ descent module where she spent three days in orbit. The first British cosmonaut - Helen Sharman – was also rightly featured as a key figure!
Amusingly, the one piece of documentation did give my sister and me a good laugh. A little school girl, upon hearing that Soviet Russia was preparing capsules to send to the moon, readily offered her services. In her neatly-written letter she assures us that she is equipped with a warm coat & hat and warm felt boots. She’s not a fan of tinned food, but will supply herself with potatoes and butter!
The one shortcoming of ‘Cosmonauts’ was its slightly sanitized and optimistic air. It tended to avoid discussing the true cost of this venture. Deaths caused by the party’s overzealous push towards launches/deployments despite technical bugs weren’t discussed in much detail. (Read more – Vladimir Komarov, whose Soyuz 1 capsule crashed upon re-entry. He reportedly went ahead of Gagarin, knowing there was severe danger.)
For Laika, one of the first animals in space, I would thoroughly recommend Nick Abadzis’ ( @abadzone ) well-researched and emotional graphic novel of the same name. It details the circumstances in which a four-legged street urchin came to be strapped into a space capsule. It talks of sacrifice, tragedy and regret not truly acknowledged by the relentless party propaganda machine at the time.
If you want to catch Cosmonauts, it runs to 13th of March! Our family enjoyed it greatly. The nostalgia certainly hit like a brick.

Just found all the pencils to The Cigar That Fell in Love With a Pipe while clearing out the attic. Here’s a few pages... ol’ Orson at the top there, and others featuring the greatest torcedore, Conchita Marquez and the love of her life, Wooden John, the sailor...
