The Night- Clara Philippe

The museum seemed empty… the darkness engulfing statues to look like haunting unmoving figures dotted around the long room into nothingness. I was reluctant to enter, fearing the unknown. I was sure that no-one would be there, it didn’t make sense for anyone to be there, and yet here I am thinking about all the possibilities that lie within this darkness. If it were daytime this room would be beautiful. It would have streams of light flowing through the windows onto paintings of ladies in uncomfortable yet elegant dresses and men trying to flaunt their wealth and superiority complex. Oh, how this would amuse me however it is not daytime. It is night. And I am the night keeper. I am… In a way… responsible for the goings on of the night as I am its protector. If you think about it though It is not a being that can be harmed for It is everything and nothing. I am just here to keep it company and tell it what I see and how these things make me feel. You see the night is not blind but has lost its ability to appreciate small things and the meaning behind them and although I too am old and am losing this sense of “feeling” I continue to describe what I see of the humans in the daytime when I cannot be seen. This fascinates night. I don’t know why. I describe to night the children running care free and the parents worrying about the children, the surroundings, their lights being on at home, the noise and so much more that you would wonder why they were there at all. I describe the old couple who sat on a bench together in quiet whispers enjoying the bustle of the world and the solitude with each-other simultaneously. Night does not understand the ‘why’ of these actions and has a lot of questions that I don’t feel qualified to answer but I must. Yet night never walks alongside me. Never asks where I’m going or how I’ve been. Night seems hallow and empty in comparison to what the humans find in each-other. I understand neither…. Maybe someday.
