Side Note To Fan Fic Authors

Here’s the thing.

I read a lot of scripts.  A lot.  From professionals to aspiring writers to complete newbies.  Features and pilots.  Specs and treatments.

And 8 times out of 10 the fan fic that I’ve read over the last, oh, 15 years is leagues better than this stuff.  It’s more inspired.  It’s more compelling.  It’s genre bending and creative and heartfelt.  It’s well-paced and intense and funny and sexy and meaningful.  It’s smart and thoughtful and good.  It’s novel-quality.  Better than, sometimes.

Rare is the script I don’t want to put down, but how often have we stayed up until 3am to get to the last chapter of a 100k fic? And it’s not even a fan fic author’s day job.  This is what they do on the side.  In their spare time.  For free.

So my point is, fan fic authors, you’re good.  You’re good writers and great storytellers.  I know it doesn’t always feel like it, especially if you’re one of the authors who’s not a BNF and doesn’t get the notes/hits that a few do.  And  because some people still view fic as “not real writing.” You guys know the shit that gets made into movies.  You’re better than that.  So be better than that.  If writing is what you think want to do, then just know you’re already doing it.   You’ve already started.

And you’re more talented than you might think.

Update: I finished it. It wasn't very good. So I pulled an all-nighter and agonized for a whole day for pretty much no payout. So fun.

I was on Ao3 shortly before 6am MST yesterday morning. I was there when the site went down. "There" being the second to last chapter of a Miraculous Ladybug fic I literally stayed up all night to finish. I found out the site was down by trying to open the last chapter.

Now there's rumors of bitcoin ransom and the site being down for weeks and I just-

You say this like Alix won't abuse the powers of the Rabbit Miraculous specifically to show Adrien his supervillain father getting crushed by a Ladybug piano. This isn't a missed opportunity. It's an inevitability, once Marinette coverup Gabriel's crimes eventually falls apart.

lots of things from the finale can be resolved in seasons 6 or 7 but adrien missed out on seeing his girlfriend drop a piano on his dad’s head and we aren’t ever getting that moment back. the opportunity is gone forever.

Based on how directly they tackled the Bourgeois situation in the episodes leading up to the finale, this is definitely intentional. This show, for all its flaws, doesn't shy away from making points about complicated issues, even if some of it is watered down for young children to grasp. They're definitely gonna address the heavier stuff. It may take two seasons (like it did with Adrien realizing his advice to Marinette was Shitty™️ or Caline realizing she was part of the problem), but they'll get there.

honestly i think (mostly hope) everyones reaction (the salty ones) are the reactions we're supposed to have. like after everything thats happened this is the way it ends for gabriel?? nah pretty sure (not really but i can dream) this finale is supposed to make us mad and suspicious

It's not just the LGBTQIA+ community - cult survivors do this too. Castiel has saved the lives of people from all ages and all walks of life. I mourn the fact that Castiel is fictional, that we can't show him his impact, and that he will never truly know how much he is loved.

if castiel knew thousands of queer humans spend everyday celebrating his bravery, his heart, his courage in the face of all of the pain in the world.. if he knew we cry for everything he had to go through, if he knew we would do anything to hug him, if he knew how people find him to be an inspiration to be a little kinder everyday.. i think he would simply melt down. hashtag castiel day
