Unused solo para for Cora (non-canon): Mercy
Cora stared at the tiny, twisted loop of silver metal, and her blood began to boil. It had once clearly been a signet ring- the type of ring worn by a monarch to seal official documentation. Once, but no longer. And she knew that this ring- this ring was an abomination.
Because it wasn’t her mother’s. The Queen of Hearts, Ardenzana of Wonderland, never removed her signet ring. Not even when she slept. And so years ago, when she had been forcibly taken to the Isle, the Queen of Hearts (who had lost many jewels that day) was still wearing her signet ring. To Cora’s knowledge, the Queen still had it. The person who’d tried to steal it from her on the Isle had met a grisly fate at the Queen’s own hands.
But the fact that another one existed, this one...it was a sign that someone had tried to challenge the reign of the Queen of Hearts. The Red Queen and the House of Red had been eliminated several generations previously, by one of Cora’s great grandmothers. More recently- about five years before Cora was born -the House of White had grown as an upstart splinter group, but the Queen of Hearts had managed to execute them. All of them. Including their rogue, so-called “queen,” the remains of whose ring Cora suspected she now held in her hands. And Cora knew this, because it was one of her favorite bedtime stories- how her mother had quashed their enemies and secured her throne and their safety.
The Queen of Hearts rarely took trophies and had destroyed all traces of the House of White, but she must have kept the signet ring to ensure it didn’t fall into the hands of anyone mad enough to play at being a lost relative. It was half-melted, but what enraged Cora more than anything else was the fact that where the band was melted, just under where the “monarch’s” stamp would be, was a hidden spade.
“They were playing you,” Cora muttered to herself, steadily growing more enraged, “How dare they! How dare they!!?” The House of Spades had sworn loyalty to her own family, they’d been members of the court of the House of Hearts, receiving as much honor and favor as the House of Diamonds (her father’s own family) and the House of Clubs. Yet secretly, it appeared a faction of the House of Spades had attempted to set themselves up as rivals for the throne.
“Did you know?” Cora wondered aloud, trying to figure out how much her parents had been aware of, “You had to know...you defeated them...” the princess trailed off, “This was your evidence...” she practically ripped the broken ring into pieces before her eyes widened, “You must have known. And realized there were more- traitors, spies...” The Queen of Hearts had famously eliminated the entire faction (more brutally than her ancestor had the House of Red), and it was this last event that had likely been Auradon’s trigger to send the King and Queen of Hearts to the Isle. Yet the Queen and King of Hearts had granted the so-called House of White a trial...so why would this be it?
“Unless you found more,” Cora realized with a start. She thought back to a conversation her mother had had with her on the Isle. The Queen had been sipping tea, bitterly staring out the window of the Shack.
“Corazana,” the Queen of Hearts had said, “A word of wisdom to you. When you find a spy in your court, you must realize they are not alone. For someone had to let them in. It’s not enough to get rid of just the spy. You must get rid of their allies. If you don’t...” she sipped her tea, “then you leave loose ends. Loose ends have ways of becoming rats, no matter how young they are. You must be merciless, when you get rid of spies. Age shouldn’t matter, because someone young will always grow old.”
Cora listened to most of her mother’s advice, but this particular tidbit hadn’t sat with her for long, mostly because she’d been trying to pretend she liked tea. Smiling as she swallowed the wretched stuff was an act she had to concentrate on.
Cora gripped the broken ring and gasped, “You let someone go,” she breathed, “You let someone go. And now you’re on the Isle.”
That left only one question:
Who had the queen shown mercy to? And why?
