I don't mind vannat but it's crazy how it overshadows tainat when canon tainat is SO GOOD and canon vannat is nonexistent. honestly tai just has the best dynamics with all the other survivors in general they're all so compelling

oh heavy agree! many tai dynamics get overlooked in favour of van, yet somehow this doesn't stop potential van dynamics getting overlooked for tai... a prominent example of this is parkinglot (as well as vannat, though that tends to be read platonically as opposed to homoerotically). like let's not forget that tai and lottie have sauce too!! tai sleeping in the attic to prove lottie wrong, lottie being the first to clock tai's sleeper self, the further friction between them engineered by van... like they could have had such a great conflict. it was all *there* from s1. and parkinglot is like... van was lottie's acolyte, gave her a couple of weird charged looks, encouraged her delusion which subsequently led to the hunt (in the adult tl) and... yeah. like it's not sauceLESS, but imo lottai has so much (romantic AND platonic) potential. yet people shove it aside because it's a tai dynamic that doesn't have a white person in it and, well, just bc it's a tai dynamic in general -- meaning there's a black person in it. also something about all tai relationships outside of van being perceived as platonic... which is like, ok, if you want, but in fandom (esp this one) platonic usually amounts to 'not worth thinking about much'. or at least that seems to be the case w 'platonic' tai dynamics...

as for vannat vs tainat (which is what ur ask is abt, so sorry for going off on a tangent lmao), yeah. the reason people like vannat usually has to do with their superficial similarities -- dress style (which i dont agree with, nat's not a butch so much as she is a fem goth. like van is those men's dress shirts whereas nat's thick eyeliner and flannel with fishnets. and a leather jacket duhh) and living in the trailer park. and ofc their whiteness makes them generally more palatable. also like. given that it's a hc not riddled with so much of canon's heaviness, and a shockingly large chunk of this fandom prefers said lighter, no-crash/pre-crash fanon, it's better-received. the bulk of tainat is situated between timelines. something something tai's guilt (or something else?) compels her to reach out to nat. something also compels nat to accept this help. i want to know if the acceptance of that help was begrudging and if so -- why did tai push? or if it was seamless, and if so -- why did nat accept? unfortunately not a lot of ppl gaf abt yellowjackets outside of the teen tl lmao which is. really disappointing but entirely unsurprising. also tai's black, which is def a large factor in how she's treated.

misty is an intern at an infirmary in the same university nat got a soccer scholarship. eventually, nat gets hurt during practice and they meet.

prompt #2 - mutual pining

misty decided to dye her hair black and straighten it so she could get nats attention. nat gets pissed - she likes the blonde curls.

prompt #3 - 5 + 1

5 times natalie says she loves misty and 1 time misty actually listens to it.

prompt #4 - domestic

nat realizes that she really loves misty. she wants to tell her and starts practicing saying it out loud at night, while misty sleeps next to her.

prompt #5 - agegap

a young 25 yo natalie starts attending the local library cause she's about to fail all her college classes. she meets misty, the owner, and they both get very intrigued by each other.

prompt #6 - cheating

nat is kind of dating kevyn. she finds out misty is going out with walter and decides to seduce her as a way to prove she's not actually in love - she's not even into men! it was only to prove a point at first, but misty takes it seriously and, eventually, so does nat.

misty hears that natalie, the building's new plumber, is really hot. she lets one of her earrings fall down the sink drain and calls her for help.

misty has an accident at work and nat gets really scared, thinking about her life without her. she gets nervous and self-conscious when they see each other again - of course misty notices it.

nat gets a cold and misty coincidentally appears at her house, ready to take care of her.

natalie finds out about the hidden camera and decides to play dumb, driving misty crazy for a while instead of confronting her.

misty has a dream about natalie dying in a very unexpected way. she tries her best to save natalie but, at the end, she got it all wrong and nobody is actually dying. at least nat is a little moved by her efforts.

many years after the rescue, nat is now a public defender. one day, in court, she comes across misty, now a successful lawyer who's always in for the win.

prompt #14 - no crash au

without the crash, nat ends up becoming a professional player, which helps her stay clean. after a few years, she retires due to injury and decides she wants to be a high school coach. coincidentally, misty is a nurse at the same school.

prompt #15 - jealousy

nat gets jealous after assuming walter is misty's new boyfriend (he clearly isn't) and decides to hook up with kevyn to mess with her. it pisses misty off, so she does something about it.

prompt #16 - established relationship

nat and misty live together and new mysterious neighbors just arrived. misty is all about finding out the juicy details, while nat is trying hard to make misty forget about it.

nat bumps into misty's unlocked laptop and finds out about the smut fanfics she writes. misty gets embarrassed, saying it's based on research but she's pretty sure it's not accurate since she has never done anything like that. nat offers her a free trial.

misty and nat rent a house together cause neither of them are comfortable with being alone after everything. misty is having a hard time dealing with nats habit of walking around almost naked - of course nat is very aware and is, actually, havin the time of her life by teasing her.

natalie is absolutely convinced that misty is a lesbian. she tricks her and takes her to a lesbian bar, just to prove her theory. things get messy when misty starts enjoying it - without her.

misty goes to a pet shop to buy things for caligula. strangely, she finds natalie there.

prompt #21 - zombie apocalypse au / canon divergence

misty and nat come back to a completely different world after they're rescued- a virus had spread throughout humanity and all their loved ones are now disturbing half-dead creatures.

after the rescue, nat had an unplanned pregnancy. luckily, misty, who has been tracking her for a while, is there to help.

misty decides to go to a resort during her summer break from college, trying her best to stay away from her empty and lifeless house. when she gets there, she realizes natalie - who she hasn't contacted in a few years - is the local lifeguard.

after spending months spending time with misty everyday, natalie realizes they are, in fact, dating; or at least that was what she thought. she panics after seeing another girl hitting on misty and realizes she has a new life goal: ask misty to be her official girlfriend.

misty and nat ran into each other at a gas station years after the rescue. they sit for a while and talk about that night in the wilderness.

prompt #28 - tropes and cliches

natalie needs a fake girlfriend to keep an annoying boy away from her, but it was too embarrassing to ask any of her teammates. she decides to ask misty for help.

prompt #29 - a moment of weakness

during a storm, the power goes out at misty's house and she learns she's actually afraid of the dark - she feels like anything could happen and she has no control over anything if she can't see properly. she's by herself, her parents are out of town, so she decides to call the only one she knew would answer - her "bff", nat.

natalie the quiet, preppy loner; misty is the loud, carefree grunge girl. when they get paired for a class project, walls start to crack and neither is who the other expected.

one of the best decisions yellowjackets has ever made is reverting the women back into girls at their most vulnerable moments. shauna when she kills adam, nat laying her head in lottie's lap, misty seeing young natalie in the mirror, misty in the morgue seeing lottie because this truly hammers home that their lives stopped the moment that plane went down and that no matter how much time has passed by, they're still those teenage girls who were on their way to their football game and lost 19 months of their lives trying to survive.
