She is...
By Jamila Skeete.
Last week, we were challenged to create a 90 second documentary on a subject of our choice.
So I meshed together a number of ideas: identity, anonymity and my mum.
The main issue I wanted to portray is the fact that Muslimahs (Muslim women) all seem to be painted with the same brush. The British media, and for the most part, the world's media only seems to only focus on the plight and the stories of South Asian Muslimahs and only recently Somali Muslimahs, who's identity for the most part is deeply entrenched in their religion - don't quote me on that - as both cultures are entwined with Islamic history.
So in this mini docu, I wanted to portray a very different identity. My mum was born and raised in the UK with a non-muslim, creative background. This soon changed once she became Muslim.
Please enjoy :)

Creative Tech Week - Google/YouTube (7th, 8th and 10th of May)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By Marissa Thomas
In Week Nine, my Creativity Works colleagues and I spent three days at Google and YouTube. I learnt so much about the inner workings of Google, something I use every day without fail. Here is some of the valuable insight and nuggets of wisdom I picked up over the three days.
Nishma - What is marketing, why should we care?
The Five Steps of Successful Marketing

Be curious and obsess about customers and customer experience
Be relevant and creative… data gives direction… but emotion gives impact
Keep it simple
Be inclusive - If you do not intentionally, deliberately and proactively include, you will unintentionally exclude
Your comfort zone is not where the magic happens
What is Google Trends used for?

Digital Media Week - Verizon Insight Day
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By Marissa Thomas
On Friday 26th April 2019, the Creativity Works team and I spent the day at Verizon Media. We engaged in several activities and had many talks with experts in different fields throughout the day. Here are some of the best tips I received from our time at Verizon:
Lianna and Raj - Advice about the industry
There isn’t a right or wrong way to get into the industry, it’s not essential to have a set path
Hard work, passion and knowledge are common themes that are needed in the industry and will get you very far
Local papers can be a great place to cut your teeth
Constantly ask for feedback to improve, you can always do better if given the right advice and guidance
Learn not to take things personally when you are just starting out in the industry
Try to be an all-rounder and learn to be versatile
Diana - Presenting to Senior Stakeholders
When presenting to senior stakeholders:
List the key points that you want to make
Support your argument with data, charts and graphs
Know your audience
In terms of body language, speak slowly and clearly so that you can be understood
Emily - Pitching
Pitching is not always about selling something but remember that you have something that the other person wants
Make sure your pitch is clear
Be aware who your audience is and adapt to the situation
Path to Media Careers - Mared
Things to consider before applying for a job
What do I know about the company and its culture?
Have I customised my CV/cover letter?
Is the commute reasonable?
Why do I want to work here?
What do I bring to this role?
Know who you are & own it
Your passion?
Experiences?
Hobbies?
Beliefs?
Challenges you have faced and overcome? Ambition?
Why are you interviewing for this role?
During the course, we have been told about the importance of LinkedIn and this was reinforced at Verizon where they told us that most of their candidates (39%) come from LinkedIn. 29% are internal, 23% are direct applicants and 7% are referrals. Agencies make up 2% and the final 1% comes from social media.
I thoroughly enjoyed my day at Verizon. Being taught about pitching and how to overcome nerves when speaking in front of a new audience was really useful and helped me to improve my confidence.

My experience at Disney Aladdin European Gala!
By Jamila Skeete.
Tumblr media
So, last Thursday (09/05/2019) was the craziest and one of the most exciting experiences I've had in a long time - if not for ever! it was the day of the Disney Aladdin UK/Eurpope premier unbeknownst to me and I happened to be in the Leicester Square, London area just before it had started. I, like many others just decided to join the hoards of people who had been drawn in by the buzz - there had also been a Leicester Square football match which added to the chaos.
I was actually planning to just go home and sleep 🤭 but for some reason I decided to stay and see what happened and ended up making friends with another girl. After what was probably an hour the screaming started; Will Smith arrived on scene! and following this the cast started rolling in. to cut a long story short, after just under 2 hours of spectating from afar with my new friend, a random security guard saw us in the crowd and handed us tickets, completely for free to watch the premier of the film with the cast - albeit, they were seated right at the front and we were right at the back, but how many people can say they've watched a movie with Will Smith?!
Tumblr media
(Ticket in hand!)
(Walking the purple carpet!)
The movie was great - everything you can imagine from a live action take on Aladdin, filled with colour and glitter. i think my favourite part of the film - apart from Will Smith being an awesome Genie - was Naomi's performance as Princess Jasmine. I was kind of apprehensive about it. Not too long ago, my friends and I were having yet another rant about how Disney Princess stories, overall, essentially offer no inspiration or real substance. Their stories are entrenched with chauvinistic views of what a woman should be and what constitutes her worth - in a nutshell, her looks. I mean:
Snow White: all she had going for her were her looks, that's about the only thing the story focuses on, from her name to the fact that she was able to charm 7 dwarves and that her enemy's main qwarm was that she was "young and pretty" *rolls eyes*
Belle/ Beauty and the Beast: Whilst Belle is a compassionate, brave and a bookworm, she is essentially summarised as wasting her beauty because she chooses knowledge over being a damson for men to walk all over.
Sleeping Beauty: i mean, it's in the name... as well as the fact that the most notable gifts she recieved were to do with her looks. And it was her beauty that attracted the Prince to break the charm. I guess it worked out for her though. had she been "less beautiful", maybe she would still be in a coma?
Pocahontas: summarised as a beautiful savage. forget the fact that shes a badass who stuck up for what she believed and stayed true to her culture. Enough said.
Anyway, sorry for that rant, I won't go on but you get the picture!
Back to Disney Aladdin. I loved how Naomi portrayed her as character as a strong, intelligent woman who truly cared about the people around her wasn't afraid to speak up for what was right and stuck to her principals. of course the credit also goes to the writers but Naomi portrayed this perfectly.
Tumblr media
(The cast giving a speech before the film.)
Overall, I had an amazing night that I couldn't have possibly expected! I made new friends, walked the purple carpet and watched a magical movie with Will Smith, Naiomi Scott, Mena Massoud, Riddley Scott and Marwan Kenzari! 😄

Facebook  masterclass - Simon R Pires
@simonrpires
My time at Facebook Headquarters for a master class by Josh King was an inspiration we were all given lessons in multiple ways to use Instagram stories and how we can create better stories, content and how to create rainbow text, however I still haven’t been able to master it, once we were given these tips we were shown how our creativity can be used and given an empowering lesson on how work you may not find to be your best can still be used to push yourself and your brand forward.  Finally, we had a panel of four people who worked at Facebook and how they began their own journeys into the media world, I received tips for my CV and Linkin page, which whatever can help me or allow me to put my foot into those fancy doors will always be appreciated.

Ichi The Killer Review - what a bloody statement - Simon R Pires
@simonrpires
Instagram: simonrpires95
There are some films that have a certain goal in life. Ichi the killer has one and that is to disturb you or as for its classification: shock genre, to shock you. Yet when watching this film you can’t help but laugh at it and feel a sensation to support its villains. In any case, my name is Simon R Pires. This is the Ichi the killer review. (I will do my best not to spoil)
Directed by Takashi Miike who is most know for his J horror films such as Audition (1999), Visitor Q (2001) and the cult film Ichi the killer (2001). Ichi the killer is filled with various types of beating and torture scenes that would make the saw franchise blush, this has one sole purpose and that is to show that this film is ultra-violent, based on an ultra-violent manga of the same name. Exploring the underworld of Japan and in some ways the twisted nature of human beings, that only through pain can we understand ourselves but other people, examples of this is shown throughout the film, especially when we are introduced to Ichi who is a broken character with a sick and disturbed outlook of the world, as an upset child lashing out at the world, but with blades on his feet. Which add some gory kills to his kill count, without going too much into spoilers, there is a scene where he slices a man in half with his weapons. This, however, is nothing, why should we be disturbed by a man being cut into pieces we have seen this is in so many other films, With Ichi the killer it has a seductive ability to show the power of violence and to alienated us with images of woman being beaten almost to death and people hurting themselves just so they can feel alive.
Tumblr media
What is the story of this film? It is based on Hideo Yamamoto manga, which follows Kakihara a sadomasochistic mobster, who wants to be killed or experience pleasures of almost being killed, so when we are introduced to Ichi who is a serial killer and assassin who leaves his victims in a bloody mess, its Kakihara goal to find this killer and fight him to the death. The is a lot more to the story, the problem with the story is that it is ultimately hard to follow due to it being almost this long episode adaptation of a multi-volume manga series, split into a mob drama than a mystery with action, the film itself is classified as a horror, but I honestly did not feel any horror from this film, but more of a American crime drama, with some changes. The most important thing of this film is to understand that Kakihara is called in to find the mob boss; he is willing to go any distance to find him. His sadist methods and disturbed acts bring him to discover Ichi and slowly become obsessed with him. Ichi is a conflicted person who has a carer and mentor called Jijii who uses him and takes advantage of him to control him. So when we see Ichi on screen, the audience will mostly see a young man with macho insecurity and the strange taste of what it means to be a man that woman want.
Going deeper into the characters we can easily make comparisons with Kakihara to the joker, due to his scars on his face, his calm and self-assuring body language, helping him come across as this charming punk. Who stands out due to his wardrobe choices, which almost screams out attention. As for the secondary characters we have crooked cops Jiro, Saburo and Kaneko who is the mob's bodyguard and his son who is bullied and meets Ichi and slowly beings to admire him.
Tumblr media
Ichi the killer is a more like a filthy comedy mixed with an extreme form of S&M, that uses disturbing forms of violence to bring attention to its self and did it in such a way that it may have inspired filmmakers to create some iconic films such as Hostel and saw and even short filmmakers such as myself. The film successfully sells in shock value and humour especially when we see scenes of inflicting pain, I myself I’m not disturbed, but when you see someone bleed like a busted water pipe and limbs flying around like nothing, you feel like you just entered a mature cartoon instead of a film. As for the deeper meaning to the film and what characters represent, we can say that Kakihara goal is to live and feel alive and no form of drugs and sex can remove the inch that torments him throughout the film, his very iconic look shows how far he is willing to go for that ultimate thrill. Tho he is the leader of the gang, he is in his own little world until Ichi was introduced to his life. As for Ichi his sexual frustration and his ability not to understand what it means to be a man slowly became deformed, due to what he saw growing up and experienced so we can not hate him but in somewhat praise for the fact that he didn’t go alright mad and killed everyone on sight. Ichi reminds me of a pit bull, it is animal that has a bad reputation, however, it's not the breed thought it is the way that it is raised and brought up that will ultimately shape the dog stereotype it will be.
So what do you think of Ichi the killer, do you think it deserves it Cult status. Will you be watching it? If so leave a comment and support the blog, have a wonderful day and keep filming.

A new breed of alien - Simon R Pires
@simonrpires
Instagram: simonrpires95
Hello, everyone, it’s Simon here to bring you some ideas for a couple of films. In fact, this is a message for 20th-century fox and Ridley Scott.  I believe that it is safe to say that I have seen a lot of films; I know this because I recently went through a list of empires top 100 films and scored 97, to my surprise I have always been a big film junkie but even I was shocked. So when I asked myself what is my favourite film of all time, I couldn’t answer this, however, if I were to have a top 10, then alien and aliens would be in it. I am a massive fan of the Alien universe, so it pains me to see the way that the film franchise has headed now. In my opinion, there are worse films than good films in the franchise. So I thought of an idea to make a new film and perhaps help the franchise. With that out of the way. I hope you enjoy this post, you can follow me on Twitter and Instagram for more topics on media and film.
Alien?
When we focus on the story we have an SC-FI horror film, with an alien, or in a more simple way to put it, “Jaws in space” so, with the first Alien film, which was released in 1979, we are introduced to this creature. We learn it is an insect-like creature and it has acid for blood and takes on the features of whatever the host was, this is why in alien 3 we have the runner alien because the face hugger attached it’s self to the dog (Poor thing). It was only in aliens we discover there was a much bigger version of the xenomorph – The queen, Like an ant colony. The xenomorph operates to serve this one queen. To some of the fans, this was a complete turn-off, due to the fact, they were taking away elements that made the xenomorph frightening. To me this was a step to in the right directions; by allowing us to learn and even study what the behaviours of these creatures are like and why they do acts of evil.
Tumblr media
Future in comics?
That is correct, alien and predator had their own series, which was published by dark horse comics in the late 90s with moderate to massive success. Some stories in the comic series are so good, that SC-fi horror fans claim to be the best stories written. However only two come to mind, with the directions that alien covenant took, I believe this would be the perfect time to bring these elements into the big screen, since some of the stories have only four issues we would have to combine two of them, however, if done right they will be a match made in heaven. So SPOILERS WARNING.  In Alien Covenant David has taken over the ship and we see him flying the ship to its original destination, in the film we discover that he created the first xenomorph. With that in mind, we have one option that is to make David the main villain and to jump into the future. Since David is an android, this can play well, due to one of the twists in the comic story.
The two comics that the film script should be focused on are: alien Labyrinth and Alien Stronghold. Ok, so stronghold was written and drawn by John Arcudi, the same person that gave us Hellboy. So the story is about a married couple that are technicians, summoned to help a lone scientist and a group of synthetic in a hidden base that is working on a way to eliminate the xenomorph with bioweapons, but later on the story we discover that the scientist is in all kinds of shady deals, but what sells the story is two characters, one is called “Jerri” who is a synthetic that looks exactly like a xenomorph and “Dean” which is a synthetic that is made to protect the scientist, but also kill all xenomorph, so imagine this machine is Arnold from commando, while Jeri is like Starlord from guardians, so we have one that looks like a monster while the other one is the to kill monsters, it is a perfect match. This is where we can have comedic moments in the film, but the reason why this comic would be perfect is that it explores the human-like qualities of the synthetics and the 3 laws of robotics. We can use this to learn more about David and his takes on the 3 laws and who wouldn’t want to see, a talking alien, with a cigar in his mouth.
Tumblr media
The second comic they can use is alien Labyrinth.  This ladies and gentlemen is a horror show, not because of what characters do. But what happens with them.  The story is about a high-ranking army officer, going on a mission to discover what is happening in a secret army base. What he discovers is that the is mad scientist, running tests on xenomorph behaviour and biology, but the officer has to make an important decision, is the scientist  a genius or insane, the A plot of the story is interesting enough, but it is when we discover the origins of the scientist that the story becomes a horror show, almost as if we are entering hell, we see what these creatures can do when pushed to the extremes and how willing they are to go to save their nests. Some of the disturbing images we have seen in the franchise are thanks to this comic, such as the pregnant woman in alien vs. predator requiem was thanks to this comic. This comic shows the brutality of the alien’s species making it even uncomfortable to read yet along watch.
So with those two stories we can begin to blend this concept, by perhaps having David a scientist and lying about what happened to his crew, allowing him to live 100 of years, giving him enough time to study and even breed the perfect alien (aka the alien we know) this can introduce us to Jeri and dean who works with David. The conflict could be that in this space station 30 or more people have gone missing, causing the company to send in a crew to see what is going on, allowing David to study the behaviour of the xenomorph when ill, this leads into the maze and labyrinth section of the story. Some crew members (Married tech couple) escape thanks to Jeri, leading into the final fight with David. Just for fun throw in an alien queen, making it a 2 vs. 4 David and the queen vs. Jeri, Dean and the couple. Dean with two pulse rifles fighting a queen and Jeri stabbing wherever to help the couple.
Tumblr media
Alien Rebirth
Not the best title, but since we are starting a new chapter which could link with the first alien, I believe this can bring new life and introduce fans and horror lovers to new characters. 20-century fox would make so much money on the Jeri and the dean concept alone, that I am surprised that they haven’t done it. This is what I would make and base it off. I hope you enjoy this alien concept. What would you make? Have a wonderful day, keep filming.
P.S – Please don’t go putting your head into strange egg-shaped things.

Why are we not taught this - Money - Simon R Pires
@simonrpires
@purplemms
@laurenm_tech
Instagram: Simonrpires95
Money management
I am going, to be honest with you all, I am shocked not only with how much this government has failed me but every young person in this country, in teaching young people how to live and perform simple tasks in our day-to-day life. You may be wondering why I’m I so annoyed by this? The answer is simply I learnt some of the most important things in my life in one day at the age of 23. So if I did not take this chance to join Media Trust I would have not learnt so many things about being an adult but most importantly money management. The knowledge that I have acquired could not only help myself but my future family, this included certain types of insurances, montages and starting business accounts. I am so grateful for this knowledge and the fact that people charge for this knowledge and manipulate people to get certain benefits is unacceptable, so with some of the knowledge I am about to share I hope it helps you not only take control of your life but help your friends and family change theirs. So here are some tips for you to get started.
Share to buy!
If you have a job and you have a partner or trusted friend, go with share to buy because in the long term you will be able to buy a property but also make money from it, allow me to explain. When you are looking for a one-bedroom apartment, for example, and you have a job that earns you around 30.000 you can get a mortgage, which is four times of what you earn, however, the issue is you must still pay a bit up front, but the benefits over a couple of years, is that you have just paid off certain amount and you are now an owner of 25% of that property, so if you partner also did this that would mean you would have brought 50% of the property, so if that property goes up or down, it is yours. The higher the risks the greater the rewards, the reason why not a lot of people do not do this, is due to the fact that you will be heavily relying on another and a job that can pay that mortgage. My advice is to rent for a while, save as much as possible and do it when you have a friend or partner that you trust, so you can both reap the rewards.
Tumblr media
Credit works when you work
Don’t have a job do not get a credit card. If you want to have a credit card and gain multiple rewards be smart and have common sense. Though sense cannot be given it is learnt through pain and suffering, however, since you are reading this you must have some sense. So how does one use a credit card? Simple one has a job, there are many benefits to using a credit card, but one must understand it only works if you are able to control yourself, you see credit is free money, so lets say I decided to buy a beautiful Korean arcade stick to beat annoying kids online rank battle, but it costs £300, the smart person would save up and buy it with his or her debit card, but what if I really wanted it and it was on offer, so I buy it, the good thing is my payment is coming next week, so I pay of the credit card company as soon as I am paid and I get a good credit score, over time my credit limit is being increased from £500 to £3000, however, because I am always paying off the credit on time, I am building a good credit score which allows me to claim certain rewards like free goodies or even upgrade flights. Now the bad way would be to buy the Korean arcade stick with the credit card then the next month I buy a couple of games because they were also on offer, however, I still had not paid off the Arcade stick, but I paid off the minimal requirement, the only issue is I am now always owing money to the credit card company, so was it worth it in the end. The answer is no, that’s why have a job and only buy what you need when you can pay it off with your next paycheck.
Tumblr media
Get life/Health issuance now!
This is a strange one, epically if you’re young after all, in your entire life nothing can go wrong right? Wrong you are not a god and you can not control death all you can do is manipulate it, even that you can not be sure, so why risk it for yourself and your family. Did you know if you start having a life issuance now and you paid around £5 a month you would have £80-100.000 waiting for you in the end, that is more than what most pension offer, so imagine a member in your family has that, if god forbid you are not here, your children or grandchild will be secured for good part of their lives, that is good re-issuance. Finally health issuance, is something that I wish I had now, but have begun searching for a claim, the best way to describe health issuance is simple, sometimes the GP is not enough or good enough to solve your issues, sometimes you need to go to someone who is better and private and the best way to do that is through issuances such as BUPA, AXA and Vitality Health, the more I research the more I feel sad for the people who can’t get help when they need it, including my mother, if she were to do this she would pay fortune, but for me I would pay almost nothing, so I am begging all of you to get it while you can, I promise you most the stories you hear on the news wouldn’t have such a sad ending if they had one of these two issuances, so do the smart thing and claim a quote.
I hope these small tips can help you change your view on life and help you feel more at ease. This is information we should all know but sadly we don’t until now. Have a good morning or evening wherever in the world you are.

Your 101 guide on researching and compiling questions for guests on radio.
By Sania Qaisar
During my experience at BBC Radio London ‘The Scene with Jasmine Dotiwala’ I have researched many guests. You may wonder where do I start? What key points do I know to pick out? How do I make sure it’s PC enough for Radio? Well I’m here to give you tips and tricks on how to research guests and create questions for Radio.
1. Make sure you look at your brief, the eye is in the detail. Once you get information from either the artist or manager, look at what they are trying to promote or even what they are raising awareness about and so forth. Ask questions if you need to!
2. Where to start? Right, always get the basics done out the way. Ask yourself the 5 W’S Who, what, when, where, why? Make sure this is done in a few bullet points just so the presenter can get an overview of the background.
3. Where to look? Look at your basics on Wikipedia, Bio’s, social media or previous interviews but make sure it’s FACTUAL meaning look at the sources!
4. The Nitty Gritty- rather than just looking at Wikipedia for the intricate details, make sure you look deeper into the artist. You WANT the radio interview to be interesting for the audience and the guest (remember a lot of them have had the same old conversations on radio). Look at recent social media, if you end up on the guests sister’s best mates uncle’s page it’s okay! Previous interview articles, videos and the answers they give. Follow it up on your interview not only does it make the interview exciting it shows the guest that you really know them and it will look good on you!
5. Make sure you know your FACTS! Whether it’s music they are promoting, business, book etc. Look at ways you can get involved beforehand LISTEN, READ and even attending an event means you’ve gone the extra mile.
6. Be wary of anything TOO controversial- for example on the BBC you may have to be careful on what you say on LIVE radio. You DON’T want to offend the guest in anyway!
7. Compiling questions- Link this with your research or anything that pops out to you. Make sure you start your questions with a little context and then go into the question. Build it up and make your questions open ended so it promotes more conversation.
8. Have fun with it- don’t make it a task, enjoy the process. Having a deep stalk can often lead to great conversation!
Below are some examples of questions I have created for ‘The Receipts Podcast’ Tolani and the crew during my time at BBC Radio London. I hope it helps you guys!
1. You are all very active on social media, if one platform was to shutdown what would be the one you could not live without?
2. The Receipt Podcasts success is evident from all your individual opportunities that have come from it. What has been the most memorable moment for each of you?
3. You speak on many scandalous topics on the podcast along with your personal stories, are their any topics you steer away from?
4. You’ve had One Acen, Julie Adenuga and phenomenal actress Regina King on the show. Who else would you love to have and which particular topics would you want to discuss with them?
5. Speaking of Regina King, how did the collaboration come about?
6. Why did you decide to start the podcast, what was the process?
7. The receipts podcast is the first WOC podcast to get to number 1 on the Apple podcast charts. Why is it important for WOC to use podcasting as a platform to voice their opinions?
8. You all have fantastic independent projects alongside your podcast, tell us more about them?
9. Tolani, you wrote and pitched the trailer for Top Boy which premiered at the Drake concert in London. Tell us more about how the opportunity came about? Have you met the man himself?
10. What advice would you give to people who want to start there own podcast? Do you think the podcasting industry is becoming increasingly competitive. How do you keep yourself original?
11. Do you ever fear that an ex, family members or past friends will come across a story you’ve told on the podcast. Has the situation ever occurred?
12. Do you ever look back at your first podcast, how have you seen your growth?
13. As ambitious ladies, how do you stay consistent with your drive and determination?
