Silvery Barbs? For Free??
Tumblr media
You may have seen this post by DnDShorts about the most annoying Sorcerer Build (if you haven't yet, you can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/O4RNNm3HUDo) that says you can build a sorcerer that has unlimited uses of Silvery Barbs.
DndShorts (hereby referred to as Defendant) claims that an Aberrant Soul sorcerer can cast Silvery Barbs without expending a spell slot because:
a) At level 6, they gain the feature Psionic Sorcery which allows you to cast certain spells using a sorcery point instead of a spell slot.
b) Silvery Barbs is an Enchantment spell that meets the prerequisites of the features Psionic Sorcery and Psionic Spells
HOWEVER:
The Defendant failed to mention that such Enchantment spell has to be included in the Psionic Spell List, which a level 6 sorcerer can choose to change as they progress in their adventure. Thereby, including Silvery Barbs, and other powerful Enchantment or Divination Spells, in their Psionic Spell List.
Meaning that casting Silvery Barbs without the need for spell slots is indeed: LEGAL
HOWEVER AGAIN:
The Defendant also claimed that it cannot be Counterspelled as casting a spell through the Psionic Sorcery feature means casting it without the need for magical components (somatic, verbal, or even material). Hereby implying that it cannot be counterspelled as it cannot be detected.
Unfortunately, the mechanics of Counterspell does not say that any a spell must be perceived to be negated. So, no matter how a level 6 Aberrant Mind sorcerer casts Silvery Barbs, counterspell can still target it.
HOWEVER AGAIN AGAIN:
In the 2021 Sage Advice Compendium, an errata written by WoTC reads that
"If a spell that’s altered by Subtle Spell has no material component, then it’s impossible for anyone to perceive the spell being cast. So, since you can’t see the casting, counterspell is of no use."
Which means that by Rules as Written and Rules as Intended by the Wizards of the Coast, it is possible that a Silvery Barbs spell cast using the Psionic Sorcery feature will make it undetectable by Counterspell.
In conclusion: Silvery Barbs for free and undetected? LEGAL!
Or illegal, it's up to you and your table's definition really.

The Detect Thoughts copper piece - do you need the copper piece to cast the spell? - YES
Tumblr media
Well, since the PHB states that if a spell's material component has a monetary cost, then the component is needed to cast the spell.
And since 1 copper piece has monetary value in the world of D&D, then you will need the component before you can cast Detect Thoughts.

See Invisibility doesn't negate the Invisible condition? - (Strangely enough) LEGAL
Tumblr media
Invisibility grants a creature the invisible condition and See Invisibility lets creatures to see invisible targets. However, even though it seems like the Invisible condition is set to follow the rules on Unseen Attackers as discussed in Chapter 9, the second phrase in the Invisible condition dictates that:
"Attack rolls against the creature have disadvantage, and the creature’s Attack rolls have advantage."
With how the phrase is worded, at face value, it does imply that a creature affected by the Invisible condition has those benefits whether they are seen or not by their targets.
We can agree that this isn't RAI, but with no errata yet from WotC, I guess this is still the RAW description of the condition.

Artificer Net-Launcher? LEGAL!
Tumblr media
As the last sentence says, the Net only needs to hit a creature and the RAW description of the Net does not specify that it needs to be a weapon attack, only that it hits the creature. Moreover, even though the Catapult spell will deal damage to the object thrown (in this case the Net), the Net can only be destroyed if it takes at least 5 slashing damage and the Catapult spell deals bludgeoning damage, which means that it does not destroy the Net or free the target restrained by it.

The Criminal Rules Lawyer
Hi! I'm the Criminal Rules Lawyer. I'm here to prove (or disprove) any dnd 5e meme build or combos you can find online. I'll thoroughly look at any and every "game-breaking" build I find and will post my verdicts here so that you can be 100% sure that you're allowed to use (or forbid) any build you find online!
For each build I review, I will post one of the following verdicts:
Legal - The build is made in accordance with every rule written in the PHB, DMG, and/or any other WotC published dnd material that might be related to its conception. It is valid to use this in a game.
Illegal - The build has failed to comply with one or more rules in the PHB, DMG, or any other WotC published dnd material that might be related to its conception. Unfortunately, it cannot be used in your game without express permission by your DM (or by your own rules-lawyering player).
Unclear but Passable - The build has one or two unclear phrases written on it that cannot be confirmed through the use of any WotC published dnd material. It can still be used in your game if your DM allows it, of course.
Outdated - One or two components of the build has been resolved through an errata published by WotC and therefore, the build is now unusable.
Note: I'm just here for funsies, I'm not the final say in your gaming group and not everything I say will be completely accurate. At the end of the day, it's either up to your gaming group is allowed in your game or not.

Being immortal has had its perks and its disadvantages. You don’t know how you came to be but you don’t complain because you are not only immortal but can shapeshift. After 2000 years you shift back into yourself to live another lifetime only to be recognized by someone who uses your birth name.
