i cannot stress enough how i can imagine hotch excusing himself, disappearing for a bit coming back and when asked he just says:

“just a panic attack, im ok,”

and he does this a few times before the team finally starts to pick up on the signs. the problem is hotch’s panic attacks are deadly silent. so if you’re not looking at him you can’t tell. he’ll just excuse himself under the guise of going to the bathroom will only mention it if he’s questioned.

the only tell tale sign that anything has happened with be the redness in his eyes. they always get red when he cries.

like mentioned he’ll NEVER tell any of the team as it’s happening unless he’s asked. he can’t burden them like that, or distract them and it’s not very professional to put that on them as their boss. he will tell them if they ask tho because he believes in openness like that. if they weren’t willing to take on a burden they wouldn’t ask.

there's something so fascinating about the physicality of Hotch. he's tall, strongly built, and he uses that, he's commanding. he's loud, his voice carries well, but he's rarely violent. he's a clean shot, he's steady. that drops when he's not in charge of a situation. his voice gets the softest of anyone on the team. he moves stiltedly. stands awkwardly, like he's trying to shrink - he makes himself look smaller. he fidgets but it's isolated to areas of his body, the rest of him freezes. when he loses control he tears down to bone. screaming in the face of fire, beating Foyet to death. inherent violence tamped down and down. and you know it's there, when he's physically commanding, but it's not far away even when he's not.

hotch and fire -> who couldn't he save? what happened?

hotch and gideon's relationship -> because spencer wasn't the only one gideon walked away from

the foyet arc -> specifically the stabbing. specifically how it was almost 100% also sexual assault and how hotch chooses to deal with it

Haley Brooks broke her cassette player in her car almost the same day she got her car. The only song she could play properly was “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey. She’d even pull over to rewind it. Hotch had no idea, he just thought she really liked the song, so he made her a mixtape of… just that song.

He hasn’t heard it in a long time. The first time he hears it after Haley’s death is when Jack buys a Glee CD with his pocket money because his friend’s older sister watches Glee and he wanted to be cool. 

Jack knows all the words.

Hotch knows all the words.

They burn their own CD for the car of every Glee version (updating it each time there’s a new cover) and the original of the song. It gets stuck in the CD player. Hotch doesn’t care, he’s pretty sure Haley did that from the big beyond. The team refuse to drive with Hotch because they’re sick of hearing Journey and Glee. 

Hotch never tells Jack that he sings it the same way Haley did, that he does the air guitar the same, that he belts it out of tune just like his Mom.

Jack just likes seeing his dad smile (and belt it out, even if he has the music prowess of a strangled cat.)
