“... the rooms which have really appealed to my imagination have been ships’ cabins, log cabins, monks’ cells, or—although I have never been to Japan—the tea-house.” * When author Bruce Chatwin settled on a flat at Eaton Place, Belgravia, he knew exactly who he wanted to guide the process of transformation: John Pawson. “The architect had lived and worked in Japan. He is the enemy of Post-Modernism and other asinine architecture. He knows how wasteful Europeans are of space, and knows how to make simple, harmonious rooms that are a real refuge from the hideousness of contemporary London. I told him I wanted a cross between a cell and a ship’s cabin.” * The author sits on a tubular chair at his folding card table beneath a Peruvian parrot-feather hanging. The French canapé, which came from the apartments of Empress Marie Louise at Versailles, signed by the firm Jacob-Desmalter, he found at Christies. The table is by Alvar Aalto. * Photography by François Halard, 1984. * #brucechatwin #writershome #eatonplace #belgravia #londonflat #livinginlondon #londonauthor #johnpawson @johnpawson #minimalism #classicmodern #jacobdesmalter #empressmarielouise #versailles #alvaralto #peruvianart #1980sdesign #1980sinterior https://www.instagram.com/p/CBRQgrDJNjD/?igshid=1pkgo0j507n1z

“When I moved into Poggio I was still painting in an abstract way. I was writing poetry, and some of the paintings and many sets of drawings were in fact poems or phrases written across paper or canvas.” Teddy Millington-Drake in his studio at Poggio al Pozzo, his casa colonica near Sienna. David Adler’s French influenced Art Deco design for Clow House (1927) in Lake Forest, Illinois, with interiors by Frances Elkins and Eyre de Lanux. Photo 1: The great hall is defined by a Scandinavian-inspired Art Deco coved ceiling and furnished in silver screen worthy glamour by Eyre de Lanux. Photo 2: The grid-pattern paneled dining room designed by Eyre de Lanux is pure luxe. Photo 3: Frances Elkins’ elegantly sober classical interpretation for the great hall. Photo 4: David Adler’s simplified classic façade, featuring a forecourt bounded by spare, squared gray limestone columns with parallel metal rods between echoes Josef Hoffmann’s 1913 tea house courtyard for Vienna’s Villa Primavera. Minimalism meets majesty at Palazzo Daniele in Gagliano del Capo, Salento. When faced with the decision of how to preserve his ancestral home for future generations its heir, Francesco Petrucci, turned to Ludovica + Roberto Palomba to translate his vision of an art-centric palazzo in the 21st-century into a hotel, which was then realized by hotelier Gabriele Salini behind GS Collection. Calder Constellation ✨ * Ruth and Leonard Horwich, longtime fixtures in Chicago society, were avid collectors of art—in particular, works by Alexander Calder. (Ruth was photographed in 1978 for T&C in her living room surrounded by the artist’s signature mobiles.) In 1967 the Horwiches helped found Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, and after Leonard died Ruth donated 15 Calders to its collection. * @townandcountrymag #ruthhorwich #leonardhorwich #alexandercalder #calder #mobile #mobiles #modernsculpture #artcollectors #museumofcontemporaryartchicago https://www.instagram.com/p/B-KGcXFpw5F/?igshid=eypg5uu8b79o

KATSURA IMPERIAL VILLA (17TH CENTURY), Kyoto, Japan - The apex of traditional Japanese design. Hugely influential on such architects as Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, and Kenzo Tange, Katsura may be 400 years old, but it looks utterly of the moment. Its famous gardens are punctuated by several tea pavilions, the standout being Shokin-tei, seen here. * #katsuraimperialvilla #kyoto #japan #traditionaljapanesedesign #shokintei #teapavilion #japaneseteapavilion #shojiscreen https://www.instagram.com/p/B-AoxpnJg3c/?igshid=1o6jgoj734duy
