The beauty of calligraphy is the tongue of the hand and the elegance of thought.— Imām Alī ibn Abī Talib (ع) The outer façade from the shrine of a most beloved leader. Much is known about this extraordinary man, yet what most of us don’t know is that Imām Alī (ع) was a Parton of all Guilds or what is known modernly as art and craft (aṣnāf and futuwāt). Imām Alī played a key role in founding the arts of Islam. He developed the first form of Islamic Calligraphy known as Kufīc Calligraphy and therefore many have followed in his footsteps in producing the arts of Islam for years to come. Like so many who looked up to the Imām for inspiration of faith and strength, I too was able to find a deeper relation to the Imām. And it simply was the relation of Art. Imām Alī continues to inspire me through all of my artistic endeavors, and today I honor him on the day of his auspicious birth with the promise to continue to serve myself with the continuation of gaining knowledge in all forms of Islamic Art.
