i think where my james differs from canon is just in how jkr was trying so hard to make him the quidditch-equivalent of the douchey high school quarterback.. and i agree that he’s an athlete, but i think it’s in the sense of, like,

james potter is the unfailingly friendly Ultimate Frisbee guy at your college who is somehow perpetually in a state of playing hacky-sack on the lawn with his 274757 identical friends. every single shirt he owns says something akin to “WOODCHUCKS CAMP COUNSELOR 2017” “SENIOR CENTER LIFEGUARDING” and was clearly acquired through some sort of group activity. he has cheap wire glasses & always wears one of those dorky bulky plastic casio wristwatches, his dad gave it to him when he was 12. you’re shocked to learn about his trust fund. you’re shocked to learn about his fraternity membership. he always wears his jansport backpack with both straps, it has a beaded keychain of a turtle on it that some kid made him at summer camp. he has a six-pack. he was a boy scout. he plays fucking Settlers Of Catan with his Mom and will get embarrassed telling you about it. and he’s also somehow the most handsome person you’ve ever seen in your entire life.
