havent had much drawing motivation lately so *throws pile of old AU scribbles i made months ago and never shared directly at you*

basically the result of a random scenario i came up with ages ago that spiraled out of control juuuust a little

introducinggggg. Splice! (it/its) the... i guess you could say love/hate child of Matrix and Alva my favorite toxic yuri/yaoi/whatever the fuck you call it when theyre both nb.

the first and only instance of a common/rare "hybrid", informally dubbed an "uncommon" wubbox. neither alva nor matrix have any idea how they managed to bring splice into existence.

despite its parents' strained and conflicted relationship, splice is well loved and taken care of- spoiled, even. alva is very protective of it, and despite letting matrix visit every now and then, never lets splice out of its sight.

believe it or not matrix is actually a decent parent! a little dumb and irresponsible sometimes but loves their kiddo very much. splice is one of very few beings in matrix's life that they truly, genuinely care about (not enough to stop their horrid experiments, though...)

somehow managed to inherit one of matrix's robot arms in place of its right arm, resulting in splice having to deal with a disproportionately long and hard to control limb from birth. it's lightweight enough to move, and its hand functions just fine, just very unwieldy overall; splice (at least when it's a kid) seldom uses it properly, mostly just letting its arm drag on the floor or keeping it in its mouth.

rough growth chart/ref thing; third pic is its teen/young adult stage! this au is connected to my semi-anthro wubbox universe, so as it ages splice's body gradually becomes more humanoid

more grown up splice! had a silly idea where it retains its arm-chewing habit from when it was a baby throughout its life

i <3 making aus of aus. heres organic au splicey and a peek at human au splice (aka Spencer; haven't really drawn them much yet)

organic!splice is missing an arm, but its prehensile tri-tipped tail makes up for that- manipulation wise, anyways. it prefers to walk on two legs rather than on all fours (or. all threes). as a common/rare hybrid of sorts i guess it'd be the monster equivalent of intersex? inter-rarity? just generally an oddity

spencer was also born missing an arm, so maddox made them some sort of experimental prosthetic (hence the robot arm. it probably looks more normal canonically I just like drawing it as the noodle version). but, no matter how many times maddox (sometimes Alva too) tries to fix or upgrade it, it’s pretty uncomfortable/doesn’t work all the time and spencer doesn’t like it very much. it's kinda just dead weight to them

pictured here is 10-11 year old spencer dealing with the newly acquired knowledge that one of their parents is a wanted criminal and serial killer. poor kid

anyways. came up with this semi humanoid wubbox design a while ago bc i thought itd be a fun concept. instead of the usual hollow body they have a defined two-part torso, with a hip and chest segment connected via a spine and translucent stomach area. as you can see here instead of proper organs they have Goop. slime even. which serves as their digestive system, dissolving and absorbing anything they consume near-instantly. the membrane is somewhat thick and resilient, something between skin and rubber or vinyl. wounds like this will heal relatively quickly if treated properly (literally just tape/bind it shut as efficiently as you can)

HI HELLO i swear i’m not dead lmao-

goooood question! I’m. still trying to decide what I want to do with it to be honest hfhksggkd. I do want to include the canon ethereal wub (calling it Prototype in my version) but since chimera was already meant to fill the epic-thereal niche it’s a bit hard figuring out how to fit it in yknow

that and also I’m debating whether or not to include the whole WorldWideWub wubbox hivemind thing that was also introduced at the same time……. my current ideas are

Prototype has been living in the castle for a while now but nobody knows it’s there, it mostly just sticks to being an anonymous figure and notorious hacker in online circles (possibly even crossing over to the human internet)

it’s. Not a very nice monster. it has a wide range of technical knowhow and uses it primarily to hack into online games, torment other players, and cheat its way to the top; once it gets banned it moves on to the next server, or sometimes just switches to its other main hobby, petty cyberbullying. this guy is made of spite and energy drinks and it shows

adding on to the last point, Prototype’s main reasoning for being the way that it is is mostly out of hatred. for everything. its circumstances, its ramshackle body, its isolation, other people having fun… it’s not a fan of any of that. maybe it used to desire friendship and freedom but that’s all gone now, who needs that with the whole digital world at your fingertips?

the WorldWideWub network is something Prototype has been developing on its own; it knows other wubboxes are out there and wants to connect with them- and possibly hijack their brains for its own unknown reasons- but Matrix’s portal-jamming interference has also prevented the WWW from connecting with the outside world. the closest it’s managed to get is hacking into the ethereal siblings’ dreams and speaking to them (often just to be mean to them) through there, which is how it knows the network is functioning properly in the first place. the others currently have no idea who or what it is, I’d like to explore some interactions between them at some point (chimera: who are you?? / prototype: i’m you but canon compliant)

It’s technically related to Alva; Alva’s creator Ivolta made Prototype’s framework- before leaving it abandoned for centuries- and Zarroë finished it + awakened it only a few years ago (like 10-15 maybe? it’s pretty young, possibly younger than that; I need to work out how wubbox aging actually works but mentally it’s somewhere around 18-20)

not necessarily lore important but I like the idea of it using a voice changer to make itself sound more intimidating; haven’t decided what the filtered voice sounds like but for some reason my voiceclaim for its normal voice is meanie ENA from dream bbq lmaooooo

……ok now im realizing i went from “yeah idk what to do with it” to “here’s a page of headcanons” BWHAHAHHA I pretty much made up most of this as I wrote it but it’s just expanding on the little bit of ideas I had before, sooooo. yeah. hope you enjoyed it bfhvjsjg, more Prototype content to come in the future im sure

Is there a reason Alva never really made an attempt to help the others stuck on ethereal? Did it think it wouldn’t work? Did they think there’s no point to it? Or are they a bit apathetic to world outside of Wublin island in general?

okay I had a whole paragraph written here but tumblr has decided to be a bitch today and deleted it so uh. bear with me

I would say that alva is pretty apathetic to matters outside of wublin island. the wublins and its own work are its top priority, which it completely buries itself in, leaving no room to process or even think about its traumas. so honestly? alva doesn’t really have a justification for why it didn’t go back and help the other ethereal monsters. even though going back to ethereal island itself is pretty much impossible because of matrix’s tampering, surely it could’ve at least told other monsters, and yet it still chooses to keep it to itself.

it only found out about chimera and everything else matrix had done after they reunited a few decades post-cataclysm. alva was very happy to see its old friend again, and matrix couldn’t resist showing it all the work they’d done; in their eyes, everything they’ve done is perfectly fine. beneficial, even. like any normal person though alva was horrified; it couldn’t believe the monster it used to know was capable of such gruesome things, and it basically just decided to bury that memory, choosing to believe that it wasn’t true. like I said before alva now basically devotes its entire existence to the wublins and leaves no room to process any of that, let alone tell anyone else about it. there’s still a tiny part of alva that believes its old friend is still in there, under the insanity. but with every time matrix visits it to pester it about their own experiments and research it loses a bit more of that hope

(no need to apologize for the spam btw, if you couldn’t tell already I love talking about these guys hfhhdhfhdf. hope this makes sense, a) it’s admittedly a plot hole on my part that im trying to rationalize and b) im currently sick so im not sure if this is 100% coherent, forgive me lmao)

Am I allowed to make an alternate version of one of your characters (specifically Matrix) for a concept I’m working with? I want to make them into an Acolyte (MA-D2b/Wubbox infected with MA-D2a’s blood), and it involves heavy body-horror themes and I wanna know if you’re okay with that.

Have scrolled a bit down in the AU and I am pretty obsessed with this world and all of these characters.

I have a few questions!!

-Did Alva know the other siblings before the Cataclysm? Or did it just know Matrix? And if so, what was the extent of their friendship?

-Do the ethereals know the full extent of what Matrix has done in that castle? If so, have they ever tried to kick them out or even kill them?

-How aware is the rest of the monster world about these Wubboxes?

-Are the rare Wubboxes on the other islands also conducting experiments?

That’s all for now, im sure I’ll have more questions at a later date. This AU is SO COOL! (And your art is awesome)

SO. first off. Alva did know Matrix’s other siblings, but never really interacted with them; it mostly bonded with Matrix due to their common interests. the others… don’t really have a strong opinion on Alva, though in the current day there may be a little bit of resentment because it. didn’t really make an attempt to help them all despite knowing about the Horrors

the other ethereal monsters DEFINITELY know about what Matrix has been doing in the castle, because they’re very involved. fellow residents of the island are Matrix’s favorite test subjects- well. the only ones, tbh. through some pocket dimension bullshittery they’ve basically closed off the island from the rest of the monster world; only Matrix is capable of entering or leaving, meaning they have an endless supply of captive “patients” just waiting to be operated on and augmented. very few monsters alive on ethereal island have fully intact bodies, most are missing limbs/body parts and/or have some sort of mechanical addition implanted somewhere

in terms of like. fighting back, the ethereal monsters really haven’t tried anything. they may have in the early years of Matrix’s takeover, but wubboxes are significantly stronger than the average monster; all Matrix has to do is send Zyphur after their opponents and have it bring them back to be science fodder. they do succeed in overthrowing them eventually but that’s a storyline I’ll get into another time ;]

the rest of the monster world really doesn’t know about what’s going on with ethereal island; the ethereal monsters that live on the main dimension are from later generations that don’t remember what happened, and since there’s no way to access it, no new monsters are able to see for themselves. Alva is pretty much the only one who even knows about Matrix and their siblings, let alone what happened to them and what they’re doing now.

as for the rest of the rare wubboxes, while they’re all directly tied to them, none have done anything close to what Matrix is doing. many of them do enjoy tinkering and experimenting on their own, and some of them do modifications on themselves or their wubbox (or other robotic monster) friends for fun, but it’s all much safer than Matrix’s work.

so 1, good question! i've always loved them being like. a typical mad scientist, i think that's fun, but also, like. this might sound weird, but it's interesting to me how delusional they are about it. in their head, they're doing this to help other monsters; they made chimera out of love, out of a desire to help their family, but in the process irreversibly destroyed all of them, mentally and physically. they experiment on other monsters in order to "benefit" monsterkind, yet see their patients as nothing but lab rats, not even treating them like living independent beings, making the lives of everyone around them an absolute hell. maybe they still do want to help, after all that, but that genuine desire is buried deep underneath layers and layers of mental instability and a morbid fascination with body modification! fun times

FELLOW PRISMATIC WUBBOX TRUTHER.. plspls tell be about your designs and thoughts i've yet to see another person with prismatic wubbox designs

HEY HIIIIIIIIIII sorry it took like 3 months to get to this ask but-

"This Wubbox returned from the Prism Gate forever changed! Its Monster-made electric frame and metallic armor has been altered at the molecular level to become organic furry limbs and scaly plates- extraordinary!"

here's the full set of designs i came up with! how could wubboxes exist in the dof era? hell if i know, i just love the idea, mostly just did this for fun eheh

theyre mostly based on my organic wubbox concepts, so i imagine they'd function similarly, with bioluminescent fur resembling electricity and echoing chest cavities where their core used to be. basically flipped them from being artificial beings to organic, fleshy ones, since lots of the other prismatic variants do the opposite!

and ik there's only one picture of him on your blog but your prismatic wubbox design looks really interesting!! if you have more info about him + his buddy i'd love to hear :D

I love the 'organic monsters' AU sm... are you doing designs for any other species of monster, or just the Wubboxes? There's a lot of interesting potential trying to make something like a Kayna or a Reebro more biological...

the text didn't render properly but uh. i did attempt to make a "tree of life" of sorts for this universe aljkgsdkglsk. dreamythicals, celestials, titansouls and paironormals aren't included because i was thinking they'd be from myths/legends rather than real monsters, plus i couldn't figure out how to make the shugafam, wublins, and ethereal workshop guys make sense so they're excluded completely for now

Common & Rare Wubbox: Basic Species Information

Scientific name: Monstracantus electricor (rarus; “rare”) - “electric-hearted singing monster”

Average size (bipedal stance): 13' for Commons, 12'-11' for Rares

Diet: omnivorous, with a preference for vegetation and processed food; however, if choosing to eat meat, they are capable of swallowing small prey whole if desired

Habitat: all Natural islands, as well as Fire Haven and Fire Oasis (artificially introduced)

A recent addition to the Monstralia taxonomic tree, wubboxes are an unusual species of monster well-known for their booming roars and massive size. Presumed extinct after the Cataclysm, the species was reintroduced to the modern era after the discovery of dormant wubbox eggs found in underground nests. Unlike other monsters, the Rare variant did not evolve naturally, instead being a product of genetic modification in order to introduce more diversity to the species.*

HIIIII HEY who remembers my old organic/spec bio wubbox concepts?? been reworking them + the "organic monsters" AU a lot recently, so here's some references for the commons and rares! part ape, part reptile, with a little big cat thrown in there lol. very happy with these designs, hope y'all like them! i'll probably post more about them and the whole organic au world in general once i have more actual art to share, ha

*in this context, monster rarities are the closest thing to biological "sexes" in species; Common monsters can reproduce asexually, creating other Commons, while Rares cannot reproduce on their own unless they cross-pollinate with a Common. Epics are the result of a rare and unusual genetic mutation in all species, and are unable to self-replicate.

Detail of a Common Wubbox's eye and nostril area. The purpose of the under-eye scale is unknown, as it doesn't seem to provide much protection to the face, and seems to be a primarily cosmetic feature.

*right sketch is older but it's pretty much the same structurally, figured it's a little clearer than the new one so i included it

Wubboxes’ primary method of communication consists of almost mechanical-sounding trills, clicks, and chirps, as well as deep roars, growls, and purrs; in addition to this, they are capable of learning and speaking plain Monstrous as well as any other monster. The (typically) bright blue, tympanum-like structure on their chests functions as part of a sort of natural speaker. Behind it, their chests have a large, hollow area in the center, which connects to the larynx and windpipe. When vocalizing, the sound passes through this chamber, which amplifies it significantly, often giving their voices a bass-boosted effect. 

Notoriously loud monsters, an enraged wubbox’s roar can not only be heard but felt from a long distance away, and in close range can not only cause hearing damage but physical pain due to the vibration of the sound waves. On the other end, a content one’s purr is quite powerful as well; while the noise itself is too low pitched for most monsters to perceive, the vibrations it produces are very strong, though not enough to cause physical damage or anything other than mild discomfort in others.
