thinking about a kira wins au in which mikalight is an almost functional couple but also thinking about a kira wins au in which they secretly plan to get rid of each other (teru is dangerous, light is unworthy) and when the moment comes light has found the way to make impossible for teru to use the dn so teru says fuck it and uses his gym muscles to choke light to death. now, returning to mikalight as a cute couple,

Mikalight fic thing, about 500 words. Part of the next chapter of my ongoing fic but I've been procrastinating (reading) - just ignore bits that might need context. TW: violence (consented...? but you already knew how messed up they were anyway)
"Power is in inflicting pain and humiliation. Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing" - Orwell, 1984
Light spends his time with Teru. Or rather, Light allows Teru to spend his time with him. A difference of wording is all it takes: a scrawl in the margins, a deletion. It would not do, this soon, to give up such power like that.
Teru continues writing his names as soon as he is discharged from the hospital. The burn is on his right arm and sears whenever he moves, but he snatches grateful breaths and thanks God and pushes through the pain. He is glad. He doesn’t know how to express this to an ever-concerned Kiyomi, who hovers around to refill his coffee. He hopes it sanctifies his undertaking of the holy task, cleanses his unworthy human hands. But no difference of wording seems to be sufficient, and so he stays silent and Kiyomi stays concerned.
Then there are things that he doesn’t even attempt to voice.
“Worthless idiot,” Light says, except he doesn’t use the word ‘idiot’, he uses something else, and many more words along that vein, none of which are quite fit to be put down on paper. It’s an odd expression, Teru thinks, along that vein. At least it’s just an expression, and Light is not tracing a knife down the blue tracks on his left arm, repainting them red. No, that was yesterday.
Today he kneels, still, as the hardcover comes down on his arm for the last time.
Light steps aside, satisfied. “What do you say?”
“Thank you,” Teru says, “for the pain. For remaking me in Your purity. And then he reaches for Light’s hand, falters halfway. Light meets him there. Their fingers fit together like the clasp of a necklace.
Oh, it feels good. God is good. It feels like the Genesis he’d scanned through so many times, golden-rimmed Bible on white sheets, scouring for the answers to what Light left him that day.
Teru himself had suggested this. He had whispered it to Light on his last day in hospital, then immediately begged for forgiveness. He shouldn’t dare to request anything, he had said, ashamed. And Light had asked, “But what do you want?”
The strangest thing for both of them: Teru hasn’t heard those words since his mother’s coffin was sealed. Light didn’t know, frankly, that he’d ever give a damn.
But he had been right all along. Teru’s will is unswervingly his own.
“I know I say this every time,” Light says. “But tell me to stop, and I’ll stop. Anytime.”
“God,” Teru replies, “I exist only to serve Your will. I am Your object. My opinions do not deserve consideration.”
Light strokes Teru’s hair and Teru thanks his God a million more times, face so hot he’s burning up, choking in the air. Red welts, crimson blossoms twist delicately up his arms. Light thinks they’re beautiful.
“My dear Teru,” he finally says, because the three words he actually wants to say hold too much for him to bear. “I want you to know that your opinions matter in my world.”
Teru bows down and presses a kiss on the surface of Light’s patent leather shoes.

Tfw you read a book in two sittings and the only reason it wasn’t one sitting is because your broken mind had to wrench itself up and take a walk outside halfway through.

As someone with Mandarin as their first language, reading kanji names feels like an elevated experience. Since all the characters mean something.
夜神月 (night, god, moon) - yeah, sounds like our tragic protagonist. 海砂 (sea, silt) of Amane Misa means I always subconsciously associate her with the seaside. 龙崎 (dragon, mountainous) for Ryuzaki means I see something deeply jagged, harsh, primal in L. Also interesting to me how Misa as the sea and L as the mountains parallel each other… together they form the landscape (of Light’s little game aka the whole story) I’m overthinking. Definitely.
But yes. It’s like you can taste the names or something. And names are quite important in dn.

Ever think Kiyomi gets exhausted of being the only one with a (normal functioning) family? Brackets are optional seeing as half the group are orphans. That’s how bad it is.
“Oh God, my parents are passive-aggressively talking about my cousin’s wedding again! I know she’s three years younger than me. But they don’t need to remind me!”
*blank stares*

I love the Wammy kids doing Shakespeare every year. I take it Mello gets the lead role every time? I don’t think Near would particularly care for much and Matt is the comedic relief (The Witches, Puck etc)
Matt as Puck!!! *squeals excitedly* that’s so perfect!!! Yes Matt is always the comedic relief (he does it really well too, unintentionally) that’s my talented little guy.
Acting is one thing Mello does better than Near (though that’s a really low bar) and naturally he loves that. I would kill to see Near show a little bit of passion or anything… anyways. Mello practises a lot and gets exceptionally good and at this point everyone just concedes that he’ll play the lead. Like that one quirky drama kid who has many flaws, but acting is not one of them.
Near is kind of bad ngl. He’s some background character and just plays with robots (okay, now I have a vision of Near casually fiddling with a plastic arm in the tempest while he’s supposed to be drowning).
Further hcs:
Wammy once suggested for Near to try singing. Let’s just say Mello swears he’s still partially deaf in one ear
Mello gets remarkably talented at faking death. It saves his life at this mafia shootout while he was still working his way up
Matt developed Hamlet into a video game for Mello. And then other kids wanted to join in, so he made it multiplayer. Near was the best at it (much to Mello’s annoyance)
All of them continue to make weird obscure Shakespeare references when they leave the house. Second year with the SPK, a rabbit hole of clues and Near was like O now, for ever, farewell the tranquil mind, farewell content” *blink blink* is this normal for a fifteen y/o???

Your fave Shakespeare play? I’m really interested now… And (optional bonus) sonnet *smiles evilly*
Now, don’t shoot me, I haven’t read his sonnets. My favourite play is JULIUS CAESAR!!!! I love it so much I’m actually writing a Death Note fic that’s a modern retelling of Caesar, inspired by The Hinterland Doctrine series.

I’m convinced that if Team Kira won, they would have an archive with what is supposedly Top Secret Totalitarian Theocracy State Information and in actuality is just. Videos of them playing charades. Bloopers of Light rehearsing his speeches. Kiyomi crashing out about her parents. Misa and Teru debating which is the best requiem (Mozart). And God only knows what else.

if you will ever want to expand on the favorite shakespeare's plays of the wammy's boys i would love to listen... 👉🏼👈🏼 (also i know that team kira would never read shakespeare - maybe misa or teru...? - but! if you want to add them too...)
Did I just get permission to yap? Wow, I think I did. Tysm for the ask!
Mello is Hamlet. I don’t think I can compromise on that one. The vengeance, the dramatic monologues (which he performs to Matt btw) and especially the twisted af family relations. Like I might as well not have a family, if they try to pull this crap on me.
I think Matt is Macbeth. I always see young Matt taking no interest in the plays until he gets to be a witch - and he’s hooked. He’s so invested. Only once does he do his witchy laugh and it goes wrong and he dissolves into a fit of screechy coughs (it’s still an inside joke for everyone present).
For Near I think Othello. It proves his point that “extreme emotion without logical thinking can be fatal - are you listening, Mello?” He picks apart how everything could be so easily avoided. Hence why he is so quiet and rarely expresses emotion.
L I’m really not sure. Much ado about nothing and the tempest make him laugh, but end too happily for his taste (unrealistic, he says with an eye roll and a mouth full of cake)
I don’t think Team Kira would have read Shakespeare. Misa though - I hc that she adores Romeo and Juliet, of which she read a translation. Tragic lovers wiling to die for each other? The romantic balcony scene? And she also reads it to an increasingly confused about humans rem.
Teru probably hasn’t read the plays, but maybe the more famous sonnets (the iambic pentameter bc it’s soothing for the soul). And also because they were in a history of Britain book he bought solely to read about his idol Winston Churchill lol
