I love the Wammy kids doing Shakespeare every year. I take it Mello gets the lead role every time? I don’t think Near would particularly care for much and Matt is the comedic relief (The Witches, Puck etc)

Matt as Puck!!! *squeals excitedly* that’s so perfect!!! Yes Matt is always the comedic relief (he does it really well too, unintentionally) that’s my talented little guy.

Acting is one thing Mello does better than Near (though that’s a really low bar) and naturally he loves that. I would kill to see Near show a little bit of passion or anything… anyways. Mello practises a lot and gets exceptionally good and at this point everyone just concedes that he’ll play the lead. Like that one quirky drama kid who has many flaws, but acting is not one of them.

Near is kind of bad ngl. He’s some background character and just plays with robots (okay, now I have a vision of Near casually fiddling with a plastic arm in the tempest while he’s supposed to be drowning).

Further hcs:

Wammy once suggested for Near to try singing. Let’s just say Mello swears he’s still partially deaf in one ear

Mello gets remarkably talented at faking death. It saves his life at this mafia shootout while he was still working his way up

Matt developed Hamlet into a video game for Mello. And then other kids wanted to join in, so he made it multiplayer. Near was the best at it (much to Mello’s annoyance)

All of them continue to make weird obscure Shakespeare references when they leave the house. Second year with the SPK, a rabbit hole of clues and Near was like “O now, for ever, farewell the tranquil mind, farewell content” *blink blink* is this normal for a fifteen y/o???

Now, don’t shoot me, I haven’t read his sonnets. My favourite play is JULIUS CAESAR!!!! I love it so much I’m actually writing a Death Note fic that’s a modern retelling of Caesar, inspired by The Hinterland Doctrine series.

I’m convinced that if Team Kira won, they would have an archive with what is supposedly Top Secret Totalitarian Theocracy State Information and in actuality is just. Videos of them playing charades. Bloopers of Light rehearsing his speeches. Kiyomi crashing out about her parents. Misa and Teru debating which is the best requiem (Mozart). And God only knows what else.

if you will ever want to expand on the favorite shakespeare's plays of the wammy's boys i would love to listen... 👉🏼👈🏼 (also i know that team kira would never read shakespeare - maybe misa or teru...? - but! if you want to add them too...)

Mello is Hamlet. I don’t think I can compromise on that one. The vengeance, the dramatic monologues (which he performs to Matt btw) and especially the twisted af family relations. Like I might as well not have a family, if they try to pull this crap on me.

I think Matt is Macbeth. I always see young Matt taking no interest in the plays until he gets to be a witch - and he’s hooked. He’s so invested. Only once does he do his witchy laugh and it goes wrong and he dissolves into a fit of screechy coughs (it’s still an inside joke for everyone present).

For Near I think Othello. It proves his point that “extreme emotion without logical thinking can be fatal - are you listening, Mello?” He picks apart how everything could be so easily avoided. Hence why he is so quiet and rarely expresses emotion.

L I’m really not sure. Much ado about nothing and the tempest make him laugh, but end too happily for his taste (unrealistic, he says with an eye roll and a mouth full of cake)

I don’t think Team Kira would have read Shakespeare. Misa though - I hc that she adores Romeo and Juliet, of which she read a translation. Tragic lovers wiling to die for each other? The romantic balcony scene? And she also reads it to an increasingly confused about humans rem.

Teru probably hasn’t read the plays, but maybe the more famous sonnets (the iambic pentameter bc it’s soothing for the soul). And also because they were in a history of Britain book he bought solely to read about his idol Winston Churchill lol

My favourite thing when writing Death Note is making everyone a little more human and a little less plot machine. Kiyomi prefers her coffee cold. Light listens to rock music. Teru spent one singular night drunk while in college and plans to never relive that experience again. Misa was the most insufferable 1st soprano in her choir. Wammy’s house kids did a Shakespeare play every year (trust that’s basically English class in Britain) and every single person has a different favourite.

Taro Kagami without the eraser intrigues me. What WOULD he have done if there wasn’t a way out, if he was barricaded in by an unchangeable act?

Though I feel he mainly kept the other one to keep his memories - it would not be nice to just have a large blank in your memories that you’ll wonder about for the rest of your life - he DEFINITELY considered using it. More than once. Though he never does; the reason Light carried on was because there wasn’t a way out of his initial mistake and so it was the only way he could justify himself to himself, whereas Taro has everything undone.

He never destroys it for sure.

YES YES you are completely right - though even if Taro continued, would he have gotten as far as Light? The whole tragedy of Death Note rests on the fact that Light is a perfect genius who makes his first mistake and cannot accept it because it’s literally never happened before.

Can I just point out that the youngest Kira is also the most mature Kira. Kudos to Taro Kagami, aged 13, for being more grown up than literal adults with college degrees. This kid:

A) reflects upon events sensibly and devises a rational plan of less than thirty steps (Light, are you taking notes?)

B) goes to the proper authorities and convinces his friend not to be a suicidal lunatic even while under immense mental strain himself

C) ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS ACTIONS. (Light is so bad at this one thing it’s laughable, but that’s for another post)

Thinking about @dinnertea: Not that I’m not a Mikalight supremacist, but Taro is definitely the only person capable of fixing Mikami. I think you’re making a semi-shipper out of me…
