How to pick up chicks (feat. Cykesquill)

Listen, I am a huge slash shipper, but you need to understand my biggest pet peeve about the Ace Attorney fandom.

A large part of the reason that slash shipping came to be a dominating force in many circles of fandom is because the source material's female characters have the personality of dull dishwater, and the chemistry of dry toast with their male counterparts.

Slash shipping rose to prominence simply due to people shipping the most interesting characters, who had the most chemistry. And those characters happened to be all men in many fandoms.

However, the Ace Attorney series is completely packed to the gills overflowing with vibrant, interesting, fully-fleshed out female characters, all of whom have the type of fascinating chemistry with their male co-leads that draws people to MxM pairings.

And yet, if you dare ship these interesting, vibrant female characters with the male characters that they actually have chemistry with on screen in the series, a huge swath of the fandom will brand you as gross, problematic, and occasionally 'delusional'.

These female characters are so heavily infantilized by a large part of the fandom that it's become a taboo to ship them with anyone at all.

The so-called "problematic" aspects of these ships generally being

completely normal age gaps between adults (Phoenix and Maya, Simon and Athena)

non-related characters raised together (Miles and Franziska)

characters bickering with one another (Klavier and Ema)

It becomes extremely frustrating not just from a shipping perspective, but as a fan of these female characters.

Because of how they are sidelined and infantilized and kept away from the "non problematic" MxM ships which dominate the fandom, these vibrant, interesting, complex female characters get completely diminished in fandom, used as props in fanfiction if they appear at all.

And that fucking sucks.

Ace Attorney has fantastic female characters. More people should play with them.
