Two-headed tortoise Janus turns 25!
Janus, who also has two hearts, two pairs of lungs and two distinct personalities, would not have survived long in the wild as he cannot retract his heads into his shell to seek shelter from predators. But at the Geneva Natural History Museum, where he hatched in 1997, Bourgoin and her team of carers - who believe he is the world's oldest bicephalic tortoise - can cater for his every need!
He is under constant surveillance in case he flips over, which could be fatal, and survived a bladder stone operation in 2020. His heads need periodic treatment with vaseline to stop them getting sore when they rub together.
His two personalities also generate different moods and tastes that can occasionally lead to conflict, for example over which direction to walk. "The right head is more curious, more awake, it has a much stronger personality. The left head is more passive and loves to eat," Bourgoin said, adding that one head was partial to endives and the other to carrots.

Something that really stuck with me my first year of med school was learning that women are born with all of their eggs. They won't produce any more over the course of their life, and they grew with us whilst in the womb. That just tells me that everyone has kinda been with their mom since before their moms were even born. And I find that very sweet.

Back in 1988, a 2-year-old girl named Michelle Funk had a terrifying accident. She fell into a creek and remained submerged for a staggering 66 minutes. By the time rescuers reached her, she had no pulse and appeared to have lost all signs of life. Incredibly, it took over three hours, but her body gradually warmed, and once her blood temperature reached 77°F, she made a miraculous recovery, coming back to life against all odds.

I read somewhere that "the heart strings can sometimes break after a deep emotional trauma causing the heart to lose form an as a result be unable to pump blood effectively". And researchers have confirmed in recent years that extreme stress can literally break your heart and can cause minor heart attack.

WHY HAVEN'T K18 HAD MORE CHILDREN?
(A possible explanation/headcanon)
Tumblr media
So, there are some headcanons that K18 fans have about why Krillin & 18 only have 1 child.
The common & agreed upon K18 headcanon that I've come across & also agree with is that after Lazuli became Cyborg 18, she had fertility issues due to Dr. Gero's illegal & inhuman experiments that altered her & her brother's bodies.
This fic by @krillin-fanfic covers this headcanon very well. Amazing read btw. 👍
But, I recently stumbled upon some information while researching stuff about twins...
Did you know that male & female identical twins are possible? I didn't. Heck, most people don't know that. It's extremely rare & considered a genetic mutation, but still very much possible.
How XX & XY Identical Twins Work:

So, with this knowledge, this means that Lapis & Lazuli began as identical twin males with XY chromosomes. But, shortly after the division of the egg, a genetic mutation occured that left Lazuli with the chromosomes XO. This syndrome resulted in Lazuli/18 having fertility issues. (Then, Gero's cybernetic alterations made it even more difficult...)
THE "K" FACTOR:
Tumblr media
I believe Krillin was the key factor in he & 18 being able to have a child together. But first, a question. How many noseless Human-Type Earthlings are there? Not many are shown compared to the majority of humans who have noses. Nor are many shown in comparison to Beastmen-Type Earthlings who have a lower population than the Human-Type Earthlings. Other than Krillin & Marron, the noseless Human-Type Earthlings shown are...
A girl with glasses & a boy in DB Chapter 36.
Two little boys in manga DB Chapter 113 (& Chaozu).
A police officer from DB Episode 123.
Grandma Hakkake from DB Episode 151.
A woman with glasses & a man in DBZ Episode 243 of the Buu Saga. (Perhaps the 2 noseless kids from DB Chapter 36 all grown up or 2 completely different ppl.)
A little girl eating ice cream in DBZ Episode 287 of the Buu Saga.
A guy in DBS Episode 49 from Future Trunks' timeline.
Tumblr media
* (Chaozu could be of this noseless tribe too, but he is more of a Jiangshi which falls into the Monster-Type Earthling category. Other Jiangshi are seen in DB Chapter 114, but they have talismans on their foreheads.)
Tumblr media
I'm sure there are a few other noseless characters that I missed. Others will be added when I find more.
It's possible that the noseless Earthlings could be of an almost extinct tribe of people. But, despite the lack of an external nose being a very dominant genetic trait, there still aren't many noseless Earthlings. Why?
(The noseless trait is dominant. At least it is until a certain age for some who aren't a full descendant of the "Noseless Tribe" because teenage Marron has a nose at the end of Z. Or Toriyama may retcon her to being noseless again soon. He could had been experimenting with designs for Marron. We'll have to wait and see.)
My headcanon is that other Earthlings targeted the "Noseless Tribe" Earthlings, viewing them as inferior & weaker due to their smaller stature & youthful facial features (like how Krillin was bullied by other monks when he was a kid). As a result, the Noseless Tribe now have a small population. When it comes to fertility, here's where my headcanon differs from the fic linked at the beginning...
Another part of my headcanon is that the Noseless Tribe Earthlings are very fertile, yet oddly enough, they have fertility issues when reproducing amongst themselves. They can still reproduce with each other, but not without difficulty. However, when reproducing with other human-type Earthlings, their success rates are waaaay higher.
So, reproducing outside of their tribe is an easy way for them to keep their population going. But, since the Noseless Tribe are looked down upon by most other Earthlings, their opportunities to mate with Earthlings outside of their tribe is low, resulting in their low population.
Conclusion:
Tumblr media
So, the headcanon that K18 only have 1 child being due to 18 being experimented on makes the most sense & is likely true. The other possibility that 18 has fertility issues due to her chromosomes is another very likely possibility too.
(I doubt Toriyama thought of the this or even knew this about about male & female identical twins, but there's a chance he may have known.)
My current headcanon is that it's a combination of both factors for 18. But, because noseless Earthlings like Krillin are very fertile when copulating outside of their tribe, the unique pairing of Krillin & 18 allowed for 18 to become impregnated by Krillin (but not without some difficulties).
As a result, K18 were able to have 1 child, making Marron their adorable little miracle baby!
Tumblr media
EXTRA TIDBIT:
I love the fact that 18 showed she was attracted to Krillin by kissing him, made sure Krillin [her crush] knew for a fact that she was single, said she would see him later, then she ended up marrying him. Ppl often forget that 18 is the one who made the first move. She was a tsundere simp for Krillin.
Tumblr media
Krillin & everyone else at Kami's Lookout were surprised that 17 & 18 were identical twins. Trunks only told them that the androids were created by Gero, so it makes sense why Krillin & the others thought that Gero designed 17 & 18 looked similar.

The Wound man
The Wound Man is a surgical diagram that first appeared in European medical manuscripts of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The illustration acted as an annotated table of contents to guide the reader through various injuries and diseases whose related cures could be found on the text's nearby pages. The image first appeared in a printed book in 1491 when it was included in the Venetian Fasciculus medicinae, likely Europe's first printed medical miscellany. Thereafter it circulated widely in printed books until well into the seventeenth century. The Wound Man has since become a recognizable figure in popular culture. (Wikipedia)

The eyes of an electrician after being zapped by 14,000 volts of electricity. His shoulder touched a live wire and the current passed through his entire body, including the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. The effect was two bizarre star-shaped electrical burns in his eyes, according to The New England Journal of Medicine.
