|| DAU Drabble | Halloween Night: Interlude ||

          Elena didn’t know what she was going to do.

     Her mind and body was a jumble of chaos, of half-compelled memories and a raging storm of emotions. Against what everyone had told her Stefan was alive. No, no. He was a Strigoi. Various parties had inferred this much– Rose Hathaway had practically forced it down her throat– yet Elena’s faith, the crutch of a love so strong– a first true love– that she had been desperately trying to hold onto, had prevented her from accepting the notion even when something within her begged her to accept it. 

     Stefan had been kind and caring. He had challenged her and began to fill a void left by the death of her parents. Stefan had loved her and she loved him. 

Or did she love the idea of him? Of a forbidden and fairy tale love–albeit with vampires– a love that made her reckless– and a love that constantly clashed with outside forces, namely Damon. Had it been the intensity of the tension that existed between the three of them had made it so exhilarating? She loved Stefan, she had, she did? Yet she had constantly found herself tempted by Damon. It wasn’t fair, it just was. Was it true love then if she felt such a pull away as much as to? 

     But that wasn’t the Stefan that had held her captive. That wasn’t the Stefan who used her blood to become stronger, or the Stefan who demanded she turn into a Strigoi herself! That wasn’t the Stefan who almost convinced her he was still him, who worked to tempt her and presented her a false choice. He wouldn’t turn her unless she agreed. And yet here he was unleashing his wrath, forcing her to choose a monster, or risk more lives– more death, more chaos.

          This Stefan had compelled her,                   had made her paranoid and manipulated      her mind. And Elena felt the full impact             of this realization like a second deaths’ sword. 

     A pause on a staircase, a party raging with furious fever. Elena couldn’t see Adrian anymore– him and– and Rosalie’s body lost in a flood of moving bodies. Her body! Rosalie Hale was dead. She’d been Elena’s most bitter social rival– perhaps even more so than Adrian. Stefan had killed her purposefully and she had suffered a fate Elena would have never have wished upon her. This Stefan was ruled by obsession. And, perhaps, as Elena ignored Meredith’s fury of texts, Elena was too. They were two hurricanes on a collision course. Darkness and light in it’s truest forms. A Strigoi and an Angel, it was almost comical if it hadn’t been for the growing body count. And yet, Elena remained, rooted to the landing as she suddenly laughed in an almost manic fashion. Her body shook, pale skin crawling as if thousands of bugs ran across it. Tears stung her eyes as she gripped the railing for support. This was her fault. He had come for her and every life he took was a result of her refusal. Elena had barely made it to the bathroom before the heaving began. 

     Elena was living on borrowed time, her life taken months previous. She had died, her body had laid still and cold. Her family, her friends, they had held a funeral for her. But she had been brought back to serve a purpose. She had been resurrected and history changed and she couldn’t help but think that all this had been leading her to this night. 

            Elena Gilbert would die tonight,                       or so she believed as she stared                                        at herself in the mirror.      The only question was if she was                     strong enough to take Stefan           down with her.                 Even if she wasn’t, she had to be.

     It was then the door to the bathroom seemed to      burst open, making her whip around and stumble      into whoever, or whatever had come through it.

     There’s a moment of panic that courses through her. Had Stefan finally come for her? It seemed to quick, to anti-climatic. He wanted a game, the fun of the chase. She spins around as someone rushes past her to throw up– alcohol scent filling the space. It’s so iconically normal that it momentarily off-sets the seriousness of the situation. 

                   Elena spins around as she backs out of the bathroom.                    And just as she turns around she can feel his grip around                    her arm and she freezes as she stumbles into the hold…

Biography

     Stefan Salvatore is the younger brother of Damon Salvatore and was born in Florence, Italy to Giuseppe Salvatore and Mary Ozera—whom was killed by her Strigoi distant cousin Lucas shortly after Stefan’s birth. Described, by some, as the ultimate looker with the features of a God, Stefan has the perfect pale complexion of a Moroi. There is a notable resemblance between him and his older brother, Damon, though the difference between the two brothers would be that while Damon’s handsomeness is blatantly sensual and seductive, Stefan’s charm has a touch of boyish innocence and purity. He has the classic romance novel look; dreamy and mystical in appearance and he has a strong, compelling aura. He was often described by the Nephilim, Elena Gilbert, as hauntingly beautiful, though she was often referring to Stefan as a whole, including his personality. Stefan is known for wearing expensive clothing, usually dark or black in color. Part of this is because he is a member of a royal family and was taught to dress as befitted as his position. However, most often after arriving in Fells Church, he’s been spotted on several occasions wearing T-shirts and jeans, and shows an odd penchant for wearing sweaters. Elena also frequently made remarks about Stefan’s voice and how it sounded like a familiar musical chord for her going as far as to describe his voice as strangely compelling, magnetic and chilling.

     As a child, Stefan was known for being an average student in most subjects though he harbored a certain love for the classics, taking after his mother and also held a strong resemblance to his mother in both personality and appearance. Despite the age difference, he and his brother boasted a strong brotherly bond and both attended the Medici Academy in Italy and visited court in America during summers. However it can be noted that Stefan has largely shied away from most royals throughout his life given that while Stefan does not bare the Ozera last time, the stigma on the family has still weighed him and his brothers lives. When the dhampir Katherine von Swartzschild visited his family’s estate with her father Stefan became immediately infatuated with her beauty and elegance that by his own admission could rival a Moroi. As a friendship between Katherine, his brother Damon, and Stefan grew, Stefan and Katherine’s evolved into something more. However at first unaware that she also entered into a physical relationship with his brother, he was greatly angered and conflicted when it came to light. Even so, Stefan displayed a willingness to put aside the consequences of a Moroi getting involved in a serious relationship with a dhampir and asked Katherine to choose between him and his brother, still desiring to be with her if she chose him. When she refused to choose between the two, Stefan and his brother Damon came to blows and were distraught when Katherine was taken and turned into a Strigoi during an attack, protecting them. Surviving Katherine’s attack on them, where she desired to turn them both into Strigoi, both brothers blamed each other for what she had become and became even more antagonistic toward each other.

    Some time later deciding he no longer wished to be among his own community, he left the protection of his Italian Academy and enrolled in a small town’s high school among humans in Fells Church, Virgina where no one knew him, organizing a weekly feeder through a contact he held. While attending Robert E. Lee High School met Elena Gilbert whom he seemed to immediately be drawn to. He was also struck by her strong physical resemblance to Katherine, and because of this, he repeatedly tried to avoid her at all costs. However as Elena demonstrated an unwillingness to stay away from him Stefan’s feelings for her began to grow and after Tyler Smallwood attacked her in a cemetery he saved her. They soon fell deeply and strongly in love as his mental and emotional walls began to crumble in her presence. In this, Stefan once again showed an uncaring attitude toward what could be construed as taboo behavior, becoming involved with a human. However, despite the fact that Stefan fell for Elena and Elena reciprocated his love, his elder brother’s arrival brought chaos to his life when he repeatedly makes attempts to steal Elena away from him out of revenge. Later, as murders began to plague the town many believed Stefan was the cause as he was the new comer, however Elena and his newer friends including the witch Bonnie Bennett, the human Matthew Honeycutt, and the hunter/dhampir Meredith Sulez believed in his innocence and with the help of alchemist Marcus Finch began to seek out the real culprit. Discovering it was Katherine and Klaus, the group banned together to help save the town from more devastation. As Katherine and Klaus attacked the high school with what seemed an army of Strigoi, Katherine’s attacks seemed focused on him, Elena, and his brother and Stefan. Discovering Katherine was Elena’s half-sister, was a shock to Stefan, however he did not have long to ponder it as just after Katherine’s death, he was taken by Klaus and turned into a Strigoi, presumed dead by all in Fells Church after the battle.

    As a Strigoi Stefan became the opposite of his Moroi self— evil, crazy, barbaric, inhumane, vicious, cold-blooded, cold-hearted, wicked, murderous, vengeful, jealous, manipulative, malicious and hungry for power. He has killed many humans and Moroi alike over the following few months and has developed an obsession with his former lover, Elena Gilbert. Arriving at Dalcrest Academy, he stuck to the shadows, unwilling to allow his presence to be known by anyone as he played mind games with his former friends and moved pawns around his mental chess board as part of his ‘master plan’. He also began terrorizing Elena’s life, feeding on her and compelling her to forget their meetings until she next saw him, using her blood to make himself more powerful and telling her that he wanted her to ‘choose’ to become a Strigoi like him. However, as events come to a head at the Halloween party, Stefan’s plans began to fall apart as various characters work against him. In the resulting aftermath of the party, as various characters team up to find him, Stefan will be restored by Adrian Ivashkov and as such be forced to deal with what he had done as a Strigoi while also attempting to continue on with his life, eventually enrolling in the school as well.

Main Town Events:

SAMHAIM FEST is a week long Halloween inspired festival in the town of Dalcrest, PA. There is a Haunted House put on by Dalcrest Academy’s theater department, a play adaption of Sleepy Hollow put on by one of two of local high schools (they switch off year to year; this year is Amberwood Prep), face painting, trick-or-treating at the local shops for children during the day, hay-rides, haunted trails in the woods, live music, pumpkin carving, Halloween decoration, and costume contests, historical presentations about real origins of the holiday, and more.

Vitale Society Acceptance Ritual (31st before Masquerade)

The Zharkov family mansion plays host to a huge and ‘spookified’ HALLOWEEN MASQUERADE BASH the night of which is usually classified as ‘the party of the year’. Dalcrest’s elite, both student and locals are all in attendance and given the status of some of it’s residents some even more ‘famous’ names are sometimes there. The party lasts through the night. In recent years this party has also become a ‘coming-out’ event for new members of the Vitale Society, even though this society is technically ‘secret’.

As the event progresses various general drabbles, updates, and Gossip Bat posts will be posted from the main blog and from various characters progressing the storyline serving as event prompts. An example being various deaths or plans set in motion by Stefan and/or others as the party progresses which one or more characters would uncover or be aware of as the night continues. These will all be added to this post as they are posted.

General Halloween Backdrop:

  Halloween in Dalcrest presents a fun occasion. Children venture from house to house in costume and festival activities play in full swing. The evening is greeted with the howling of ‘spirit wolves’ and wind in combination with rolling fog set a frightful scene. Various students crowd campus as students in cloaks cross it’s center, venturing deep into the woods for a secret ritual. Blue fire consumes the old and gives birth to the new as a Strigoi in the shadows prepares his final act.

  As midnight is struck, music pumps through large speakers in the intensely decorated Zharkov Mansion. A live band plays in one room transitioning into a well-known European DJ in the main room and a sea of people in masks begin their fun blissfully unaware of the danger lurking among them. The first death occurs on the second floor, one of the new members of the Vitale Society, a boy named Evan Philips, is thrown from the balcony after being drained of blood– his body mostly hidden by bushes, those that see him think he’s part of the decoration.

  A Strigoi with a dangerous and positively devious plan enters the masquerade masked, party-goers–even the supernatural– none the wiser. At least until the real fun begins.

Originally a small village of settlers, Dalcrest, Pennsylvania evolved from a village to a town being officially recognized as such in 1692 following what is known as the Dalcrest Massacre and the subsequent formation of the Elder’s Council. Over a century later, in 1830, Dalcrest Academy was founded becoming the state’s most prestigious university. The town itself is surrounded by hills and forests ideal for hiking, has dozens of restaurants and bars most of which are concentrated in the downtown area, a nationally accredited high school, and has grown with the college.

Dalcrest has a population of around 60,000 residents not including students whom reside on campus which would bring the actual number up to around 75,000 people. However, while the town appears as a blissfully ideal place to live, it hides many secrets within it’s borders, the least of which it being located on a convergence of lay lines drawing the supernatural at every turn.

With humans, vampires, werewolves and more— complete with secret societies, feeder rooms, gossip blogs, and magic wards unable to protect the towns inhabitants from dark creatures and shifting political and social alliances new dangers lurk behind every corner causing old truths to surface and difficult choices to be made.

What will happen next in the lives of Dalcrest’s elite is anyone’s guess. Some may even discover that their destinies were entwined far before their births.

One thing is clear, in this college town things aren’t always what they seem and smiling faces hide dark secrets.

*Please note that this verse is heavily grounded in the mythos of Vampire Academy and TVD novels though there are alternations to canon however knowledge of these is not required. While the primary location of this verse is in the town of Dalcrest with a central focus on Dalcrest Academy, various storylines will bring characters into other locations such as the Moroi Royal Court, Fells Church, and/or other locations.
