METALLICA's LARS ULRICH: 'We Keep It Fresh By Continuously Reinventing What We Do'

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich was interviewed by CBS on the red carpet at the 56th annual Grammy Awards, which was held last night (January 26) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. You can watch the chat below.

Asked about METALLICA's performance of its classic song "One" with Chinese concert pianist Lang Lang at last night's ceremony, Ulrich said: "[Lang Lang] just so dynamic and he has such a great kind of flamboyant and outgoing energy, and he's really, really cool — he's a really nice guy, which helps — and I think it's just a perfect mashup. Our manager, Peter Mensch, suggested it. We played in China this year, we did a bunch of shows in August, and that was really, really fun. So there's 1.2 billion people in China and we're gonna see if we can reach every single one of them."

Ulrich also spoke about the key ingredient in what keeps METALLICA fresh and exciting more than thirty years after the band's inception.

"I guess we keep it fresh by continuously, sort of, reinventing what we do," he said. "We did a movie last year and we do mashups like this. So if you get a chance to always, sort of, do different things all the time, it's really, really fun. I think, for us, the idea of, kind of, record, tour, record, tour, record, tour, that's a little dated. And when we get a chance to do all these different experiences, then it, sort of, keeps it fresh for us."

METALLICA's feature film "Metallica Through The Never" will be released tomorrow (Tuesday, January 28) on Blu-ray, 3-D Blu-ray, DVD and digital.

The film came out last September in 3D IMAX but earned less than $4 million in its U.S. box office run.

METALLICA is currently working on its 10th studio album. The band will emerge next summer for a European tour on which each night's set list will be chosen online by fans attending the gig.

The band's traditional 18-song set will include the 17 top voted songs along with a brand new track.

The tour, dubbed the "Metallica by Request" tour, will kick off on May 28 at the Sonisphere festival in Helsinki, Finland and travel across Europe through July 11.

The Case Against 8 / U.S.A. (Directors: Ben Cotner, Ryan White) — A behind-the-scenes look inside the case to overturn California's ban on same-sex marriage. Shot over five years, the film follows the unlikely team that took the first federal marriage equality lawsuit to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Cesar's Last Fast / U.S.A. (Directors: Richard Ray Perez, Lorena Parlee) — Inspired by Catholic social teaching, Cesar Chavez risked his life fighting for America’s poorest workers. The film illuminates the intensity of one man’s devotion and personal sacrifice, the birth of an economic justice movement, and tells an untold chapter in the story of civil rights in America.

     The Most Anticipated Films Of The 2014 Sundance Film Festival 

1. 'Love Is Strange'  Director, Ira Sachs'  Synopsis: After four decades together Ben and George finally get married, but it results in George being fired from his conservative job, and the couple can no longer afford their New York City apartment. As a temporary measure, Ben stays with his nephew while George stays with neighbors, but the pressures of separation after so long together weigh heavy on both.

2. 'Boyhood' Director, Richard Linklater Synopsis: The life of a child told from age six to age 18, following his relationship with his parents before and after they divorce. *it's a literal coming-of-age film, which will see Salmon and the other actors age before the cameras: as Hawke described it, it's like "timelapse photography of a human being." With twelve years passing between the start of filming and release,  it is likely the longest film shoot in history. 

3. 'The Skeleton Twins' Director, Craig Johnson  Synopsis: An estranged brother and sister reunite in the wake of a family crisis, bringing old memories to the forefront, and forcing both to confront the rather disillusioning way their lives have turned out. *Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader in  rare serious roles.

4. 'Low Down' Director, Jeff Preiss  Synopsis: Based on a true story, the film is set in 1970s Hollywood and follows Amy, the daughter of jazz pianist and deteriorating heroin addict Joe Albany, as she struggles to negotiate her own way in the world after an unconventional upbringing by her beloved father.  

5. 'Whiplash' Director, Damien Chazelle Synopsis: A young drummer at a competitively cutthroat music academy is driven to ever more insane levels of perfectionism by a new teacher and also by his own mortal fear of mediocrity.

6. 'They Came Together'  Director, David Wain  Synopsis: Joel, an executive for a candy store chain comes to New York to shut down a tiny sweet shop only to fall for the owner, Molly. But that's not the only obstacle in their path. *With Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler

7. 'Life Itself'  Director, Steve James  Synopsis: A documentary on the life and career of immensely respected film critic Roger Ebert, who passed away last year.

8. 'Wish I Was Here'  Director, Zach Braff  Synopsis: A 35-year-old struggling actor/father/husband decides to home school his kids after he can no longer afford to send them to private school. *Co-stars Kate Hudson, Mandy Patinkin, Josh Gad, Ashley Greene,and Joey King

9. 'Song One' Director, Kate Barker-Froyland   Synopsis: An anthropologist doing research in Morocco returns to New York to discover that her brother, a young musician, has suffered an accident that has left him comatose. Anne Hathaway stars as the emotionally distant sister who tries to make up for lost time by honoring her brother’s commitment to music and in doing so meets his musical idol.

10. 'Camp X-Ray' Director, Peter Sattler Synopsis:  A young woman joins the military only to end up as a guard in Guantanamo Bay, where she befriends a detainee. *Whether it's good or bad, Kristen Stewart's presence ensures this'll be one of the most talked about—or at least tweeted about—films of the festival.
