CTS B | Compulstory Question 2
My ultimate artistic vision is to open up a studio for story book making workshops for children. This is based on my previous experiences of conducting story book making classes, where I used to help young kids to brianstorm the storyboard, come up with a final story and draw illustrations accordingly to bind every work into a book.
I guess my students’ works would be the design work that really resonates with me and connects with my artistic vision. They are meaningful publications that not only contain the works of a student but capture memories and moments of their specific age as a permanent item. As a person who has contributed helping them to record snippets of their childhood, it is worth holding onto.

Another work of design I could talk about would be one of my favourite toys as a kid, which is Popin’ Cookin’. It is a DIY candy kit that contains edible ingredients that look and work like play dough. It is fun and colourful, very interactive for kids to excite their curiosity and creativity. On top of that, it also provides a sense of achievement once they complete making a candy / dish out of it.
Furthermore, ever since we had Craft (or Materiality and Techniques at the moment) classes, I have noticed my passion towards textures and patterns. I love paying attention to details, and colour combinations, just every element of visual art. And these are my interests that back up my talent and enjoyment in craftings or hands-on projects.

In the meantime, recently I also came across this thought that I would love to spread kindness and love through the talents that were given to me as my ultimate goal of my personal life. As an intersection of my practices meeting the society, I considered taking a gap year from school and to volunteer in a refugee school as an art teacher.
I would say my artistic vision and personal life goal both fall into week 3’s topic - Connecting Practice with Society. Making connections with the society is all about understanding history and culture, having emotional association and bringing the bonding in between people. Sharing thoughts and feelings. And all these can be done in the form of design, like making story books, or actions, like volunteering which requires strength and empathy to take care of people.

youtube
As a result of constantly thinking about how I could connect my artistic vision and practices to the society, and how I can give back what I have to the community - I would say my recent huge decision on taking a gap year would be an experience to build uniqueness to my artistic journey.

CTS B | Compulstory Question 1

As a group we came up with some to manifest that CTS-B would benefit us in our criticality. We talked about the importance of communication skills, self awareness and self trust. All the points discussed have valid points that they are skills to help us to be a more professional designer and a better person.
However after class I realised that I didn’t fully understand the task during the activity; therefore I created a page of my personal manifesto. My new manifesto does not only talk about my artistic identity and boosting up the quality of my academic performances yet it focuses on my personal identity as a nineteen-year-old student; declaring to be more critical as a person and to be wise in most decisions of life.
One of the aspects of CTS B that were particularly significant for me is that I can use the classes and activities as a self-reflection time where I get to constantly check up on myself and my direction in life. Topics of week 6 - Critical Self-Reflectivity and week 10 - Statement of Artistic Vision stood out the most to me as I could critically oversee my progression and where I am heading to, what would be needed and necessary.
One of my favourite manifesto is; understanding the connection with my practice with the society will bring authenticity and colour into my artistic identity.
Connecting this with Materiality and Techniques, learning different techniques of crafting such as; weaving, knotting or embossing, helped me to bring a closer connection with my own culture. Ironically, the last few classes have been a chance for me to dive deep into research on Korean clothings and culinary culture, investigating actual techniques that have been used in our history to present things in an authentic way. It is interesting how I gain more knowledge about my own background heritage through classes like these.
For Semester 1 Term 2, we were assigned to create a 16 page zine that relates our memories or culture to one of the three techniques taught. In response to this assignment, I have been working on creating a mini dictionary of Korean traditional desserts. I specifically chose this topic as I felt the most comfortable to deliver the information and build a relation to myself.
Maybe this is why many artists get inspired by their own local traditions, because they have the most understanding of the story of their culture, and that’s what makes them themselves. It’s personal.
Making a list of manifestoes is crucial and useful as it helps me have a deeper understanding of my own identity and to reflect on my values. It provides a moment to plan my future and set my goals, as well as the tone of voice of manifesting itself feeds me with confidence and faith that it will happen.

CTS B | Week 6 - Critical Self-Reflectivity
Today's class was about self-reflectivity, where we had to spot design mistakes in our daily lives, which I thought there was a strong relation to week 1- when we talked about how criticality can be creative.
My group and I brought up the issue of inconstant school wifi, and wanted to propose better visual elements for students to inform the ICT department regarding this issue.

After discussion, we realised there were two issues;
1) School wifi is unstable most of the time.
2) Students are unaware of how to raise their voices.
Consequently we came up with four resolutions;
1) To update the ICT hotline in the student learning portal under 'Forms & Contacts' or 'Support’.
2) To update the wayfinding signages in school to inform the location of the ICT office.
3) To have window stickers on the ICT office like the student lounge to capture attention from outdoors.
4) To redesign the poster with clearer information delivered.
Through this activity I was once again reminded of the importance of self-awareness and self-reflectivity. One main point of critical self-reflectivity is the ability to question my assumptions. Challenging beliefs, revealing tendencies and adopting new approaches would help me in personal growth, to tackle my weaknesses, to be able to evaluate my goals, for resilience and discipline, to apply better decisions into my design work in the future, refining ideas and elements in a more thoughtful, neat manner.

CTS B | Week 2 - Connecting Theory & Practice
Growing up as a child who was moved to another country every 5 years or so, ideas such as multicultural or cultural diversity have always been quite relatable and eye-catching to me. Through today’s activity I realised that my travels from one to another are no longer just an experience but an element that builds up my identity. I think this external factor makes myself even more special and unique, building connections and understanding to many backgrounds and cultures people come from.
With peer-feedback, I noticed I could have elaborated on how these personal discoveries develop my artistic persona. I feel like these moments of self-discovery will guide me as I keep growing creatively. I’m excited to explore them more deeply, and I think they’ll help me evolve in ways I hadn’t anticipated before.
I have a strong passion when it comes to patterns and typefaces. I believe they both have bold characteristics, which reflects and interprets cultures.
Of course as a creative young designer, my personal identity definitely has a close relationship to my artistic identity. Since I really enjoy Materiality and Techniques, I could work on crafting projects in the future, inspired by the ideas of being unalike; perhaps using mixed media or exploring combinations of various materials.

Eventually a series of similar projects like these would become a portfolio of mine which explains my interconnectedness of social categories.

CTS B | Week 1 - Creative Practice and Critical Thinking
One similarity of critical thinking and creative practices is that they can start off from a tiny idea or emotion, and it grows with flexible thinking.
Critical thoughts can be creative as it allows me to expand and shift perspectives, and it allows me to express things in many ways. As an example, I can experiment with multiple solutions based on logical reasons when there is a single issue.
Opposingly, creativity can be critical too. Today in our lives many styles of artforms are perceived criticising, to an extent where some could get offended, or hurt, yet there is no pause to to critical creativity as it voices out messages. Just like how we were tasked to tackle social issues through short texts or four cut cartoons. I view today’s activity as an extremely abbreviated and light version of what Banksy and Keith Haring have done to express their opinions.

Today’s topic has a strong correlation to W01 Digital Skills. When it comes to UX/UI design, empathy is one of the essential skills required. For instance, a good information architecture of web designs can be obtained only when the UX designer fully puts their shoes into the users' and understanding the user experiences. This is why being able to reflect critical thoughts in a creative manner is complex yet very crucial.
I like how criticality and creativity can be both solutions to problems. They help you to analyse situations and to solve them in more sensible, and respectful manners.

Experience of the WOII Module
A very biased statement, I prefer WOII over CTS. There is a deeper relevance to design, and I get exposed to a wider range of perspectives and ideas. One of the skills I have picked up from this module is to be more observant and process my thoughts further to a deep and broad analysis by questioning many factors like the aim, purpose, function etc. Realising how direct and simple my thoughts are, WOII helps me to challenge my behaviours and push myself to go beyond the boundaries I would usually have.
I truly appreciate how this module allows me to develop my presentation skills. Just by the fact that I am assigned to make slides and share them with the class every week, I feel more comfortable and confident with communicating and collaborating with my group members.
When it comes to art and design, I realised how much I kept myself within simplicity and minimalism. By getting introduced to various artwork and styles, especially from the field trip to the National Museum, I felt the necessity to be more experimental and explorative with method, style, ideas. Especially as a student just starting one’s artistic career path, by learning, I should adapt myself to a broader range of styles and get inspired by them.

W10 Poststructuralism
In today's class we were introduced to the idea of 'post structuralism'. It refers to different interpretations upon ideas that may be controversial or vary in opinion. It also means going against traditions and questioning the idea of truth.
Adding on, I like the idea of deconstruction. It investigates the actual value of each individual item, finding out the unexpected balance or relationship of the irrelevant ideas to utilise in a more advanced, intelligent way.
As a person who likes things organised in a certain structure, rather conservative and traditional, today’s lecture was quite inspiring. Maybe I should be able to expand my thoughts from different perspectives from now on.
Today's word-matching activity was very interactive and enjoyable as we had to build the connections of two unrelated concepts. Out of the three text-image connections created, I am the most proud with the combination of 'flower' and the ‘mind map’.

My group partner and I tried to associate the motion of a flower gradually blooming with the mindmap expanding and stretching out through adding ideas. The visual coherence makes it metaphorically very powerful.
This specific topic has helped me to open up my eyes especially for photography classes. I was assigned to combine a certain holiday with a certain brand in order to create visual advertisements. This WOII activity seems similar to the Photography assignment in a sense I have to connect two subjects at a greater level, implying certain messages or meanings behind. And perhaps investigating the true worth of our surroundings may help me to appreciate what I am able to access today.

W9 Cultural Materialism
Today we talked about cultural materialism, which includes; infrastructure (fundamentals), structure (order in the society), superstructure (ideology and symbolism), and that infrastructure is the base of culture and environment that we have today.
In the class activity, my friends and I selected the vending machine as the one infrastructure to investigate and analyse. It offers convenience by providing cold drinks without troubling customers to go stores, as well as technological development as the ‘cashless payment option’. Its selection-payment-receivement order also shows a sense of structure.
Let's talk about one of our most essential and significant infrastructure, the Internet. Not only that it is a source of information or inspiration, it was a huge innovation in the design industry, widening up the field by expanding areas to apply design.
As it was mentioned in class, education during the pandemic was heavily influenced by the internet. Although my learning environment was quite restricted, I became more alert to the digital spaces in our daily lives. As a person who enjoys in-person design, I was influenced to experience a new type of the artistic field.
Furthermore, as a Gen Z, who is heavily influenced by the internet, I really appreciate what the internet offers, the information, fast updates, the connections to others and the world. At the same time I was also educated repeatedly about the danger of misuse of our internet, which I agree that we barely have online privacy these days. Since we live in a world with such a close connection with the internet, everyone should be wise with their usage.

W4 + W5 How to Analyse a Work of Design + Field Trip to National Museum of Singapore
As a person who likes to observe things in detail, today’s session was exceptionally interesting. Understanding the concept of a subject matter and its meanings helped me to view objects beyond the items themselves, and to realise that they are created as a method to deliver specific functions or messages to the world.
I think my watch is a very well-crafted item because it is almost a recreated version of a watch. It maintains the function for the users even after taking out all the essential elements. It is made out of silicone, which the elasticity completely erased the necessity of a pin buckle that would usually be there. Also it is interesting that the time is still legible without anu numbers, which also is a key part of a watch. Talking about the viewing context, this reinterpretation would inspire young designers including myself, to explore and experiment originality when designing items.

As an international student, the field trip to the National Museum of Singapore was a great experience to learn about Singapore history and culture.
I managed to take a look at many different styles of art and to observe how artists narrate their stories in their own way.
The series of prints were the most memorable for me. I love how they used multiple fonts and typefaces for each different informative box. I think composition always matters when it comes to design. As a minimalistic, I especially liked this part of the exhibition where the information was neat and all were categorised in a certain structure.

*I like how this collage entirely talks about Singapore's attractions, it especially approaches relatable to me when I first came here. I wish there were more collages for me to use as references or inspirations. Collages were inspirational for Disrupting the Image for Craft Workshop. Since overlapping images are one of the main techniques for my montages, paying attention to the details were great examples to learn from.
*Artists are blessed to have such craftsmanship. Even the back of an escalator is used as a space to communicate with the audience. The ability to pay spot and use the smallest, worthless spaces to display work can only be done by artists.
*I accidentally found out this hidden function, I would have not known we could grow trees by touching empty spaces, if I didn't lean on the walls. I believe the director intentionally did not notify the audience beforehand, so that the exhibition becomes more worthy only to the people who finds it out. I think life is like that too, being adventurous and explorative brings more value to you.
Additionally, the display of various merchandise products for a certain company were interesting, as it is what I would like to do in the future. It was informative and encouraging to see how the industry delivers branding ideas as items to our market and to the customers.

W1 Phenomenology
Today’s session could not have been further stressed about the correlation between reality and consciousness. The duck or the rabbit image exemplified how phenomenology applied to art makes people’s perspectives differ. But not only specifically in art, I think this can be put into our daily lives, where we go through endless decisions and discussions. And probably this is where the concept of debates and controversies are created.
My father likes the philosopher Descartes, and he exposed me to the <Method of Doubts> since I was little. Growing up with him was all about questioning logics and introspections. It was nice to be reminded how powerful the misuse of our minds such as confusion and unconsciousness can be, especially since everything sounded familiar to what my dad had always been teaching me.

* W3 Photography, Still Life Objects - This project specifically required endless try-outs to achieve a specific effect I want. I couldn't realise how impactful the light and background reflections, until I started shooting pictures. Understanding the logic of the power of these small elements, and I make a connection to today's lecture by approaching subjects with multiple point of views.
*Night to Light Festival - One of the most commonly asked questions was 'What if this happens? Or what if this doesn't happen?' and I think that inspired us to explore more lightning techniques. Because the visual effects are created through machines, sometimes there would be clashes between images. Figuring out the best combination of lights was the key to the event.
I have titled my series of photos: “Golden Hour”. Although some may view my pictures as a collection of red items, I actually tried to capture all the emergency-related items around school. I was surprised how these items are so unconscious and unimportant to us until the moment of emergency actually hits and they become one of the first things that we look for. I tried to relate my photos to the given theme; time, by interpreting the importance of it - linking to the common knowledge of the golden hour - that appropriate time usage can actually save more lives.
As a conclusion, I learnt the importance of paying attention to details and perceiving things from various perspectives. Applying this skill to design would bring innovative and powerful artworks.
