The spirit of Jane Austen hovered over the ruckus. When Mrs Hannibal Macarthur saw in one of Davidson's letters a slighting reference to her daughter having turned the boy's head with "flattering approbation and partial smiles", she fired off a defence to Warthill:
Be assured, my dear Mrs. Leslie, of the unshaken integrity of your Son; he is respected by all. Mr. Davidson's opinion of [Kate] is, indeed, quite erroneous; and I could have hoped he would have given me credit for instilling something more solid, which would protect her from the fluttering nonsense of romantic love; and to have cherished an affection whose superstructure is religion and prudence.

Week 9: Cultural Materialism
The theory that culture develops under the influence of material conditions such as environment and lifestyle is called cultural materialism. Culture is the specific values and habits created to sustain society. Depending on the social context, it may continue to develop, fade, or be judged as worthless and disappear completely. However, what is clear is that culture constantly changes in line with the flow of history, and this affects our lives in one way or another. From a cultural materialist perspective, everything around us is a material entity that is closely related to us. The systems of the past that continue to be used today and the culture that is newly developing and being replaced form our lives in harmony.
However, not all of these changes can be seen as completely positive for us. There may also be inconveniences that we experience as old things remain without being replaced, and too fast or excessive development may actually cause damage. Therefore, we must understand the social context and continue to explore the positive interaction between culture and environment.
Infrastructure is especially noteworthy because it is where the interaction between culture and environment occurs most prominently. It is one of the elements in which the development of social and design values is most evident. When we view infrastructure with an understanding of its historical context, we are able to interact more deeply with the society around us. There are no material beings that have no meaning or symbolism. Therefore, as designers, we must have a constant interest in the environment around us, understand the historical context, and further explore what parts should be preserved and what should be developed in terms of design.

W9 Cultural Materialism
Today we talked about cultural materialism, which includes; infrastructure (fundamentals), structure (order in the society), superstructure (ideology and symbolism), and that infrastructure is the base of culture and environment that we have today.
In the class activity, my friends and I selected the vending machine as the one infrastructure to investigate and analyse. It offers convenience by providing cold drinks without troubling customers to go stores, as well as technological development as the ‘cashless payment option’. Its selection-payment-receivement order also shows a sense of structure.
Let's talk about one of our most essential and significant infrastructure, the Internet. Not only that it is a source of information or inspiration, it was a huge innovation in the design industry, widening up the field by expanding areas to apply design.
As it was mentioned in class, education during the pandemic was heavily influenced by the internet. Although my learning environment was quite restricted, I became more alert to the digital spaces in our daily lives. As a person who enjoys in-person design, I was influenced to experience a new type of the artistic field.
Furthermore, as a Gen Z, who is heavily influenced by the internet, I really appreciate what the internet offers, the information, fast updates, the connections to others and the world. At the same time I was also educated repeatedly about the danger of misuse of our internet, which I agree that we barely have online privacy these days. Since we live in a world with such a close connection with the internet, everyone should be wise with their usage.
