The road to Melbourne.
The road to Melbourne.
Tumblr media
The road to Melbourne has been a fun experience, a lot of first things for me and for our family.   See, we have never been on a plane, never been to Melbourne, never had to check in baggage or walk out on a tarmac, or rent a car, or catch the Brisbane City Cat…so many firsts, though each one we met with a silent trepidation, but excitement too…we are after all going to the Moto GP on Phillip…

Meet Lucille.  She’s a 2003 Yamaha YZF R6 and she is a beast of a bike.
My first ever pillion experience was on this bike.  I’d never been on a motorcycle before and had no idea that I would instantly fall in love with her, with riding – Lucille has opened up a whole new world.
I better mention before I get too carried away, that Lucille is my husband Quin’s motorcycle and he loves her just as much as I do.  And anyone who rides a supersport knows that they aren’t really meant for passengers, but Quin rides with me because he knows just how much I love it and there’s that meme…you know the one..
There is just something (well there’s a bunch of things) about her that makes her more then just another R6 and if you’ve seen Cool Hand Luke, you’ll know why she’s called Lucille.  More often then not she has the moniker of ‘the beast’ and I think it’s well deserved.  Anyone who has seen her flying past will get what I’m saying.
Lucille is so many things to me, to us.  She is freedom, she is exhilaration, she is adventure, she is a commuter (I know right! pretty fancy ride to work bike!)  She is beautiful and there’s no better feeling the her swaying through corners like she dancing on the road.  But Lucille is more then all of those things, she is life.  Riding is the one thing Quin and I get to do together and every time we throw the leathers on and I climb up on that pillion seat, it takes me back to when we cruised for hours in the beloved ’87 VL Commodore, the carefree younger versions of ourselves enjoying life and living the best we could.  I’ve never felt more at home, then on the back of the R6, my arms wrapped around my husband, my mind free to just be.
Ride days are the best days and Lucille makes those days possible.
We’ve been through so many fun rides in the last year and a half, but also a few challenging ones too.  From a broken toe (yep, gear shifter foot), to a dead battery coming up the obi obi range and a tow home from Mapleton, to flat tyres and rain. But it’s all been exciting, and adventure we will always remember.  We have many more km’s to travel on Lucille.
If your in southeast Queensland and need a motorcycle specialist to tow your baby home, I highly recommend Mo Tow Motorcycle Recovery, super professional setup and we got Lucille home safe.

With the long weekend ahead of us, we were determined to get in two ride days (not an easy thing to do when you have a 6 yr old) but we employed the babysitting services of Nanny & Grandma and we suddenly had two locked in days of riding.  The weekend was going to be epic!
Yamaha R6 aka Lucille
Now, I should have used one of those days to ride my own bike and get some hours under my learner rider belt, but the lure of the R6 won out and the freedom of not having to be the decision maker was all the encouragement I needed to climb up onto that pillion seat.
Sunday morning rolled around, the camera gear was packed, the GoPro was charged and we set off bright and early, hoping that the weather would hold out.  Fueling up on the way out of town the cloud was thick and threatened rain but the thought of getting wet wasn’t that big a deal, so we hit the road, regardless of the weather forecast – after all it’s all part of the adventure!
Just before I continue, I just want to mention how annoying it is to have to take off my helmet when getting fuel, I get the security issues etc, but do the store attendants have any idea just how much of  a piss off it is to have to take off your helmet and dislodge the earplugs, the neck buff, and the fringe??? First world problem I know, but have you ever had a stray piece of hair in your eye line, tickling your face? There’s no way to fix that with gloves on! Not to mention, getting your cash out to pay…I’ll just leave that there 🙂
So, with my earplugs not sitting right, my neck buff falling down and a stray piece of hair driving me nuts, we were on our way to Kenilworth.
Kenilworth Heritage
The road was the same as always (there’s not too many ways to get to Kenilworth from Gympie) and we cruised on out, watching the clouds and the rain get darker by the minute.  We came across a few cagers towing caravans, going obscenely slow up the Kenilworth range and a Galah flew at us, but otherwise a pretty standard ride out that way.
About 10 mins out from our destination (the Top Cafe) the drizzle started and quickly turned into rain, we made it to Kenilworth before its started bucketing down, but it’s safe to say both our bottom halves were a bit soggy…note to self…buy leather pants…will I be overdressed? Yes! but will I be dry? Also yes!
Rain rides are still good rides.
So we got a bit wet but we had a great breakfast and excellent coffee (this is very important) and hung out for a few hours with a newly acquired copy of Australian Motorcycle News and watched the camping crowd trying to park their ridiculous 4wd’s in the tiny town, hoping for some bikes…I think we saw 3 🙂
Just a little rain…
Monday however was an entirely different story.  The sun was shining, the sky was clear save a few clouds here and there, and everywhere was green, as if the overnight rain had acted like a paintbrush and every surface was now vibrantly coloured.  The smell of ash from a wildfire stirred up by the rain filled the wind and my helmet, everything along our usual road to Kenilworth suddenly looked different, that contrast of soaked tree trunks and new growth green, dampened blacktop and springtime sunlight was picturesque.
And the bikes were out!
Kenilworth turned it on.  Supersports, litre bikes, harleys, sports tourers, dirt bikes and everything in between cruised on through and gave me plenty of photo opportunities.

Next stop was Obi Obi hall, the perfect backdrop for getting those photo’s without all the messy background of a town.  It’s one of those spots though, that if you sit and listen you can hear the bikes coming, and then you see them come around the long sweeping corner in the distance, setting themselves up for the straight run past Obi Obi Hall.
I get plenty of photo’s there and we are just about to get back out on the road when we hear a group coming around the bend, so we wait and sure enough five bikes are in my viewfinder, I snap some zoomed out shots for perspective, and then I set myself up to get them individually as they fly past…but what happens??? My card is full! And I miss the shots! It’s my own fault for not clearing my card before the weekend, but seriously! Shit timing!

So with that epic photographer fail, we got back on the R6 and headed up Obi Obi range (so much fun even as a pillion) and again got stuck behind some caravans, a portable toilet falling off the car in front of us halfway up the range was interesting… we made it to the top though, and who should be stopped at the top? The group of bikes I missed with my camera fail.  So we headed onto Mapleton, changed the memory card and set up to get them as they rode into town.  These photo’s I got…they aren’t as nice as they would have been at the hall, but still cool pics none the less.

That was pretty much our long weekend, we cruised on home heading down to Nambour and onto Yandina, where we stopped for a bit.  Not too much happening photo’s wise but I did find an awesome little cafe called Lawn Espresso…excellent coffee! You should check it out on your next ride.
Till next time,
Ride Safe!
