I don’t think anyone would EVER understand how it feels to have a couple you love so much not end up together on a show. It’s like a different kind of pain that no one talks about and it makes me feel crazy because really at the end of the day it is just a fictional couple with fictional characters that are not real but maybe that also proves another point that they were SO GOOD that they left a permanent mark in your head and heart. Then there are these people who hate the couple you love so much for whatever dumb reason and you just feel so much rage because THEY WERE PERFECT. You want to get it through their head but at the end of the day only they can change their mind. There’s no point. You can watch edits of them or read fanfics about them but it never fully fulfills what was left. It’s so easy to come up with an alternate universe where they do end up together but again does nothing because you know that is not what happened. I don’t know about anyone else but I have nights where I just go on a full rant to MYSELF about how dumb these writers were for not seeing what I saw in them. LIKE WAS IT THAT HARD?! You can go on with your life but randomly these couples just come running back to your head and it just hurts. Especially when you know that both characters were finally getting better with each other just for it to be thrown out for some toxic relationship that was a constant tug of war all series or for whatever stupid reason. Then comes the regret of watching the show because now you just feel this hole in your heart. It’s so infuriating because now you just feel like the most dramatic person ever because again at the end of the day IT IS JUST A SHOW. Everything was made up but it felt so real. It comes to a point where you can’t listen to a song and somehow connect the couples to the song and all of the sudden you are depressed again because the song is so THEM. See, I’m a teenaged girl with no love life so shows are where I settle for just to see the love I am hoping for one day. This mainly goes out to the 2000s shows because wow, how stupid were you? (Writers) to let them go to waste after the best build up ever seen in tv show history. You watch the show and get your own opinions and hopes but what also comes with it is a clearer understanding for each character because you are watching everything so to watch them get knocked over for something horrible is so annoying!! There’s literally no good way ending this but I’m mad. I’m coming for you, Gossip Girl writers because what the fuck?

i have a gossip girl question if that’s okay. i see a lot of people saying dan and blair’s relationship parallels rufus and lily’s relationship much more than dan and serena’s does and i can see that. do you agree with that statement? but then also, do you think that means dan and blair are doomed from the start like rufus and lily are?

i just saw 5.19 and rufus and lily are currently exiled to brooklyn. lily has made no effort at all to try to integrate herself into this “world” (we know it’s because she feels wronged about ivy getting the penthouse as well as cece’s inheritance whereas rufus is a bit more understanding) so i understand where she’s coming from to a certain point. this is where all of their differences start showing up which ultimately leads to their divorce (annulment? i can’t remember) plus william (and soon bart) showing up again absolutely does not help.

while dan and rufus are very similar characters, being father and son, blair and lily are very different. however, i can get how leaving what you’ve known your whole life (the upper east side in this case) can be uncomfortable and unfortunate. idk i know this is just a hypothetical situation but it made me curious as to what would’ve happened if it had been dair who this happened to instead. i hope this was not too long or annoying and you can totally ignore this message if you don’t feel like answering! i hope i wasn’t a bother lol have a great day!

first of all, i always love getting gossip girl questions! never a bother!

personally, i actually think blair and lily are very similar, maybe even more so than dan and rufus! they are both very materialistic, cunning, manipulative, yet using all that as a defense mechanism for a deep vulnerability. they have similar taste in men (bart/chuck vs rufus/dan). they had tough domineering mothers and absent, placating fathers. they are both very concerned with image and what other people think, in a way serena simply isn't.

i don't think from what we see dan and blair's relationship directly parallels rufus and lily's (beyond dan and rufus both making their most famous art about them) - but they are all so similar in personality as well as their dynamics that a lot of dair fans (myself included) can see dan and blair's relationship paralleling rufus and lily's reconnection in a hypothetical future.

but i don't necessarily think dan and blair's hypothetical future reconnection is doomed just like rufus and lily's. i think it will really depend on a lot of different factors. rufus and lily were having problems from the start tbh - alison and bart complications, serena and dan dating and being uncomfortable with their parents dating as well (lily chose bart over rufus the first time because of this), lily giving up their love child without ever informing rufus, rufus' money problems.

i think blair and dan will be in different places in their late 30s than their parents were. dan will have been living a life of luxury as serena's husband. even if blair and chuck have divorced (here's hoping), i don't see blair having multiple husbands after him like lily did. she's living in a different era of womanhood where having a husband wouldn't be as important.

i could see a world where blair wants out of the upper east side by then. i could see a world where dan is fine staying in that world by then. there's so many what if's and hypotheticals. so no, i don't think they're doomed

How did rufly stop being about lily getting out of her world to do the things she actually wants to do with rufus and start being about rufus staying at home and trying to fit into lily‘s world. Why didn’t she start pursuing her photography, something I had completely forgotten about before rewatching because it’s not mentioned after season 1?? Why did lily start turning into her mother when it came to her children instead of fighting back against that and trying to break the family trauma cycle?? Ik that this is just a part of gg stopping to be about getting out of the UES world and start being about trying to get inside… ugh

No but it’s like. Her daughter is effortless. Always has been, never seems to understand how much work she puts in. Her daughter is effortless, and she loves her, just as she is, but fuck, if Lily didn’t wish Serena would maybe try a little more.

Jenny Humphrey has clever eyes and something a little sad about her already, and Lily knows there’s a reason why Eric is best friends with this girl. Jenny bleaches her hair and tears her life to pieces and gets back up out of the ashes and she admires her for it, she’s proud of her for it, she can’t help but think of glaring down her mother as she took her to get that first tattoo removed.

Dan reminds Lily of his father, sometimes, of blinking awake and squinting at the dim yellow light to find Rufus hunched over the guitar in his lap and scribbling in a notebook because he woke up at two in the morning with lyrics in his mouth. Jenny makes her think about—

Lily doesn’t ever go down that road.

She has Alison’s smile, Rufus tells her once, and he knows that she’s always been jealous and even if she’s older now, doesn’t dig her nails into the back of his neck as she tugs him into a kiss right now immediately, he smirks like he can see her squirming to do just that.

Jenny has her own notebooks, scribbled designs and sharply crossed out ones. She tells Lily she doesn’t mind people looking in them and seems surprised when she actually does, when she asks her about one that she’d scratched out that she thinks had promise. She talks like she’s never had someone listen before.

Jenny never takes to calling her Mom and Lily doesn’t mind it at all, but something in her, secret and quiet and animal, feels that she’s always had two daughters.
