“i’m not taking back shit. you were about to slit my throat for not announcing my presence. that’s peak alexi delaney behavior.” she knows she’d be just as horrified if the roles were reversed and he told her she was turning into either of their parents, but aren’t little sisters supposed to be annoying and know exactly what buttons to push? and you know, he did basically just try to kill her.

mina’s grateful that serena just keeps going so she doesn’t have to answer the question. even if she’s not the most private person, she knows merrick is much more reserved than she is and she’s trying to respect that. it hasn’t been too hard to navigate so far. “oh, i didn’t know that,” she manages to half mumble in response. she doesn’t even know who her dads are, how would she know they’re gossips? she nods along as she tries to describe merrick. “it makes absolute sense. and i think kind is a very good way to describe merrick.” there’s a lot of other ways she could describe him, but she doubts serena really wants to listen to all of that. “would it be a good way to describe you?” perhaps an unfair question to ask, but she doesn’t regret it.

“no, just mina,” she answers with a polite smile despite herself. she doesn’t trust serena, but she’s certainly friendlier than what she’d expected out of anyone from the court. she doesn’t love the question because she knows there’s a reputation with the brothers. hopefully this isn’t someone with a vendetta against either of them. “i’m with merrick. do you know him?”

clover looks him over. because he could absolutely be lying through his teeth right now, but she gets the feeling that he isn’t. it doesn’t mean she’s going to let her guard down though. still, she can try to be nice. it’s important for the court that this doesn’t blow up in anyone’s face. “it’s not personal. i just don’t like men touching me. or men in general really.” there’s no way that softens the blow the way she thinks it will. “i think being friends is possible. as long as you’re not super boring, because then you’d have two things kind of going against you.”

oh, she's terrifying. and not in the way that he thinks he might find attractive under different circumstances. no, this is in the kind of way that reminds kavi how challenging it is to be a human in this place. his court makes it easier, but it doesn't come without challenges. he holds his hands in a gesture of surrender. "okay, heard, understood. no touching. for whatever it's worth, i wouldn't have done it even without the threat. i won't even hold your hand at court without asking first. i, uh. not to sound just ridiculously naive, but i'm hoping we can be friends, maybe? that would be nice."

“i don’t see how it could be less exciting. it’s ice cream wrapped in cotton candy like a burrito. it’s gonna be amazing,” she tells him. at least, she doesn’t see how sugar and more sugar can ever go wrong, but maybe he doesn’t have quite as big a sweet tooth as she does. she actually does take a second to think about it. from what she’s heard, would she really want her uncle to still be dating anyone from his past? “that’s fair. i just hope maybe one day you do find someone you like more than food. and that they like you more than whatever their equivalent of food is. and i think a person like that would probably be better than anyone you’ve dated before.”

jason nods and just lets that drop because he senses it’ll be a whole thing if he doesn’t. which one of them would be the one to turn it into one is a little harder to sense. “then i won’t tell anyone and i’ll especially not tell anyone who seems like they might wanna know.”

“Oh.” How interesting that they’d let her in once she said she was meeting with Spencer. Maybe they’d assumed she was staff. Does she look old enough to be staff? So not the time to think about something like that. “Don’t they know I need him?” she asks with a dramatic sigh. Need’s a bit exaggerated. She just wants to swap back the chargers they’d somehow mixed up when packing to head home from their trip. “Do you know when he’ll be back?”

“Oh, sure, sorry,” she says, delicately setting it back down as requested. “Probably shouldn’t keep fragile things where nosey people like me will grab them…do you know if Spencer’s here?”
