It's still going- in fact, we're still in the planning stages for most of the works, which is why there hasn't been much activity!

Alright! We've reached the minimum interest to actually go through with this, so here's the sign-up form! Explanation of what DC Fanboot is under the cut.

DC Fanboot is a collaborative fanfiction (and fanart) project, wherein writers/teams of writers will be in charge of their own simulated comic book run! We'll have miniseries, crossovers and events once we're established. All of this takes place in our very own reboot of the DC universe- get in now to help shape past events and decide what that world looks like!

I’m curious on the collection setup. how will it be formatted? like I know for some collections it’ll hide the fic from your account / your username. Will our “runs” still show up on our own profiles and with our usernames on them?

The collection will not be anonymous, so all runs will show up on your profile and have your name on them. As for formatting, all fics will be in the collection, and series will be used for subdivision- runs, specials, etc.

is it okay if we join the server if we’re still not 100%? I feel like seeing discussions there might help since I’m on the fence for signing up

We'd prefer that you only sign up if you're sure you want to do it, but feel free to ask any questions you may have here or in direct messages, if you don't want to ask them publicly.

is it allowed to do more than one storyline at a time? like a normal “run” and then a miniseries that last just a few months interspersed?

You'll need to start with only one run, but once that one's established, you can take on more if you feel that you have the time.

So, if someone interprets and writes a character as queer -- shipping or no shipping, as queerness is a state of existence unto itself -- is that allowed?

Absolutely! You'll have to run it by other people writing that character, just in case they have plans that conflict with it, but creating a more diverse cast of characters is part of the fun of a fanboot.

Are we allowed to have runs that divert from the main cannon. (Like a Wings AU?)

While we're getting things started, all runs will take place in the same universe, but once that universe is established we may look at other realities.

How soon after signing up will we be expected to start publishing?

There isn't a set date on when we'll start publishing- you can start writing once all "canon" necessary for your run is established. However long that takes, that's fine!

Will there be a discord for this

There already is! The next round of invitations is going out after I finish answering asks.

Hey, I made a mistake on my application (left out some thoughts I meant to include because I got too excited). Is it possible to send in a second form with all the details I meant to include?

You can if you want, but you can also just wait a little while for your discord invite, and then explain the details in the server.

if we have a friend in the fandom who chooses to sign up, can we pick to work together? or are teams assigned?

Absolutely! Teams aren't assigned, we'll just ask you if you want to work on a team if someone else has a similar vision to you.

What's the goal of the project? Like, to reboot the universe in what way? What if authors have differing interpretations of a character, or one writer wants to honor the "canon" of a character while another wants a more "fanon" approach?

This will be a modern reboot- for example, the works are set in 2025, Damian Wayne is Robin, et cetera. We're still in the planning stages right now, so there's no established facts. All members will work together to establish facts for their own individual runs, and then we'll look over any discrepancies and find a solution that lets everyone tell the story they want to tell.

As for the canon vs. fanon question- we'll usually defer to interpretations that have basis in canon, although you can draw inspiration from sources other than comics, such as animated series and movies. However, if someone does come up with an interesting new take on a character or event, they're certainly welcome to discuss it, and everyone will be happy to include it as long as it doesn't interfere with any of their plans directly.

How long will applications be open for? Say if someone was interested in applying but was unable to for a time, would they still be able to apply at a future date? Sounds like a fun project!

Applications will be open as long as the project is going. The plan is to have a small initial group that grows over time, so we'd love to have you whenever you're available!
