Apocalypse Anticipation: What To Be Excited About
People usually don’t like endings. Personally, I am not really into the whole concept of having to conclude a certain event or thing. I feel weird when an episode of my favorite TV series ends and I have to wait for another week to watch another. I certainly hate it when a book I am reading ends and I have to look for another worthwhile one to read. I absolutely hated the experience of having to end a friendship because it wasn’t healthy anymore. I feel like endings are not really, literally, the end of things but it just makes you feel like you’ve been left hanging on a cliff. It’s like having to ask, “What now? Is this it?”
Recently, I have this knotted feeling in my stomach because the semester is nearing its end and I’m not really ready for it to end. I felt like I haven’t done enough and like I haven’t exerted enough effort which is a true. I felt like all my efforts are worthless and that the things that I have done for the whole semester doesn’t matter. I don’t know if I gave it my best shot but nonetheless, I can’t stop the days from passing by. At the end, I will still have to face my grades. I still have to tell my parents about it. I still have to think about its effect on the remaining years of my college life.
I can relate all these feelings with our series which is about the end of the world or the apocalypse as more popularly known. Because of the mainstream media portraying the end of the world as something to be scared about, we all have built a mentality of fear which keeps us from seeing the end of the world as something to be excited about.
But why do we need to be excited for the world to end? I have three points to share with you:
1. SALVATION
First of all, aren’t you excited for Jesus to come and save you? As said in Hebrews 9:28:
“It is the same with Christ. He gave Himself once to take away the sins of many. When He comes the second time, He will not need to give Himself again for sin. He will save all those who are waiting for Him.” (NLV)
Jesus is coming for you! At the end, aren’t you going to be glad to finally be with that someone whom you are longing for and always thinking about? That someone is Jesus! It will be worth all the pain, all the struggles, and all the hardships when we go and get to meet Jesus. If being in His presence while we are here on Earth feels so majestic and just plain awesome, imagine being with Him, literally. It might just feel like explosion of rainbows and all things nice, right?
2. END OF SUFFERING
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." Revelation 21:4 (NIV)
God promised us that we wouldn’t feel any pain nor suffer anymore. All those feelings of loneliness and of hurt, these all will be gone when Christ comes to be with us. All those insensitive words that left a sting in your heart? Gone. The sadness you felt when people tease you about your beliefs? Erased. There are just a lot of things here on Earth that made us sad and lonely and in pain. But God promised us that in His arms, we are safe. In His arms, we are loved and absolutely cared for.
3. VICTORY
“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you.” Isaiah 60:1-2
The end of the world means that God triumphed over the darkness that covered the world entirely. Living in this cruel world, we all have experience losing ourselves in its mad temptations. But God already wiped that slate clean for us. We no longer will live in the darkness because of his forgiveness and mercy. In Hebrews 10:17-18, it says:
“He concludes, I'll forever wipe the slate clean of their sins. Once sins are taken care of for good, there's no longer any need to offer sacrifices for them.”
Remember that I told you how nervous I am because of my grades? Well, whether I pass or not, I am reminded how God redeems us in any kind of situation. Might it be from the guilt of a sin you’ve committed, or your not-so-good performance in school, or your inability to care for the people you don’t like (But take note, this is not a ticket for us to sin). Even in our lowest point, we will find victory if we fix our eyes on Jesus. So do not worry about the end for it is a forthcoming celebration of God’s victory over the sinful world we live in.
In conclusion, we don’t have to be afraid about the end. When it comes, we won't be left hanging, there will be someone to catch us and that somebody is God. It’s a celebration of His love, a celebration wherein we finally are reunited with our Creator. The end will show how God is supreme and how God reigns over our lives and also over the world. I’m looking forward to being with God for I long to really give Him a hug and a thousand page speech of why I am forever indebted by His loving kindness. How about you, are you excited for the end to come?

"When I look into your eyes It's like watching the night sky Or a beautiful sunrise There's so much they hold And just like them old stars I see that you've come so far To be right where you are How old is your soul?" Ngayon ko lang na-appreciate ang kantang ito. Bow.
