if parks and rec was still being made they’d do a bit where ron swanson has to wear a pronouns name tag and it’d just be “???/???” And it’d cut to a talking head of him going
“I’ve been a fool all this time. It’s bad enough the government knows my name, but now they want to know my gender? So I’m not letting them know my preferred pronouns. As far as I’m concerned, no one in this building should refer to me at all.”

The Shelley Memorial is a memorial to the English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822) at University College, Oxford, England, the college that he briefly attended and from which he was expelled for writing a pamphlet on The Necessity of Atheism. Although Shelley was expelled from the college, he remains one of its most famous alumni and is now held in high honour there. In 2005, the college acquired some of Shelley’s letters to further enhance its connection with the poet. source

murderbot ep 7 is still on an upward trajectory, i think, but so far it's still not enough for me. one part i really liked, actually, was the part when mb is 'checking the perimeter' and has its monologue about allowing its power cells to run out. i thought that was done well. i also, surprisingly, really liked the fauna mating scene -- particularly because it was arada's Best Day Ever, and that's the kind of fun quirky that you can do with hippy scientists that shows they're competent but also a bit weird. interesting choice to have mb's internal modules be jammed from an outside source. i really really really hope that comes back again in the future as something mb has taught itself to do, in the service of coming into its competence.
i'm coming around to the idea that this is a show that is more origin story than anything else -- meaning that murderbot and the presaux crew are incompetent and by the end of this season (which is 10 episodes rather than 8 which i thought for some reason, which does help some of its pacing issues, some) they will be the competent characters we know and love. which is to say that i think what they're doing has this purpose. i still disagree with the idea that this is a better story -- i, in fact, think it's worse and more cowardly for falling back into well known tropes. because one of the wonderful things that the book series does is subvert expectations and allow things to be not what they seem. right?
like, i'm not the first person to make this observation, but murderbot itself is designed as The Perfect Action Hero, but when you get into it, most of its heroism actually comes from its incredibly powerful coding, its love of fantastical media, and its friendships. (you heard me, i said friends. where's that one post about mb's superpower being the power of friendship.) similarly, the presaux crew is written to be the bumbling hippies who must not know how the Real World works and thus require saving from it. but what we find is that actually they can handle themselves and they are savvy and, super importantly to me, mensah -- who is the goddamn leader of her world -- is good at her fucking job! i think it is a more interesting story when the people are skilled. i think it is a more worthwhile story when we see the people who we are told are incapable, not achieving that capability, but already possessing it. the tv show is leaning on old tropes, modern views of power dynamics, capability, interpersonal relationships, etc. and i think it's possible that they intend to get there in the end. but i think that spending the time and tone on showing the audience how wacky these people are and how bad murderbot is at its job is a poor choice, and a poor adaptational lens.
also! you cannot have gurathin repeat his book line, 'you mean we can punish you just by looking at you?' when you've already had that awful eye-contact scene in the nonsense time! you've already used it! you've already fucked it up! it doesn't make sense anymore! he clearly fucking knows!
i heard recently that many of the people who like the show didn't really like the books. not that 'oh, clearly they couldn't have!' but that they've said that they didn't. and i find, as someone who really liked the books, that i don't like the show. i think that's an interesting effect of an adaptation. a wider audience achieved, maybe. but i don't think it shows love of the source material. i think it shows love of the marketing opportunity. but hey, there's still three episodes to go. maybe they'll show me they care at some point?

i think all the best sci-fi is the sci-fi that looks dirty and lived in. like yeah we could have space travel and lasers but people are still gonna leave dirty cups by the side of their sleep pod and get weird alien mud stuck on their boots and put off fixing that faulty light on the lower deck of the spaceship. its relatable. its humanizing.
