Hi! It's uh, been a while.

A long while, actually. This past year has been, for the most part, extremely rough on me. I think from March of last year all the way over to… November? I've had a shit 2024 in every regard that wasn't music. It has pushed me away from one of the weirdest, most welcoming communities I could ask for… which is in part why I felt like I couldn't come back because I hadn't been in touch with my most oddball of qualities, and so I didn't feel like I could belong here.

But you guys never pushed me out. This was all because my confidence and sense of self took a huge fucking hit last year and I never really recovered. I felt like I couldn't be myself in the same way I used to be, when in reality… places like this helped me get in touch with my truest self. I made that breakthrough today with the help of my amazing therapist, and it got me to realise that I gotta make an effort to bring myself back in here again. Because more than anything else, I need community.

You'll notice I've been on Bluesky for the better part of last year, now that it's skyrocketed in activity and users! All of my post-Twitter friends have migrated over there, I intend to stay on there too for all intents & purposes; once a tweeter, always a shitter. Of course, I'm also on RateYourMusic all the time. But they're not so much communities as they are social thought splurging and music discussion ranting. I need a place like this and I've missed it so much.

If I end up not being active on here and failing to find time for it, then: whoopsie fucksie! But I want to be active on here more, and no matter if it lasts or not, I'm going to say it starts again now. I missed you guys.

PSA that has been given 100 times already but needs to be said again:

The reason you, gen Z queers, need to be kink positive isn't because you support those kinks. It is okay to be disgusted by them, actually.

The reason you need to support kinksters is because "these kinks are disgusting" is the framework the alt-right is using and will continue to use to outlaw you. They don't think you're any different from the guys at Pride in leather puppy suits. They think your ENTIRE EXISTENCE is sexual. They think you holding hands with someone of the same gender, or existing as a trans person at all, is the same as a straight couple playing tonsil hockey in public.

YOU ARE A FETISH TO THEM. That is all you will ever be to the alt-right. They will never see you as human. When they talk about "our children being exposed to sexual perversion" they don't mean BDSM like you think they do. They mean YOU.

The only way to preserve your own existence is to fight for the right of kink to exist, because the instant kink becomes taboo or outlawed again*, rest assured, the alt-right will become MUCH more transparent about just what they think about your existence.

When you harp on about disgusting kinks and how they need to be hidden or outlawed and how they're harmful and everyone who does them is (insert thing here), you are giving the alt-right the tools they will use to imprison you as soon as they have unchecked power to do so.

THAT is why kinksters have been part of the queer community, part of Pride, from the start. Because the only way to keep our community safe is by truly ensuring everyone has unlimited sexual autonomy so long as the activity is taking place between consenting adults. It's just like how abortion-related laws are the lynchpin for all manner of medical autonomy laws.

The queer community can't stand without kinksters and vice versa. Even if you yourself aren't a kinkster and find them disgusting, like it or not, that is just how it is.

*Sodomy was illegal in Texas until 2003 and the law is still on the books, just not allowed to be enforced thanks to Lawrence v Texas, which SCOTUS has said they have an interest in striking down

The most irritating RYMers, in my opinion, are not the esoteric-charts-obsessed avant-teens but the users who immediately call anything with any amount of depth “pretentious”

Seeing this wayyy too much in the comments (I don’t feel like reading reviews yet) of the new Kristin Hayter (formerly Lingua Ignota) album, albeit “pretentious” seems to be, more often than not, replaced with “corny” or “gimmicky.”

“The gospel and fake distortion gimmick gets old after a little bit and then it just keeps going…” Have you considered that she never intended for it to be a gimmick? That she manipulated the tape herself? Or are you maybe not listening to it in good faith by assuming that it’s purely a product for attention and fame, and that she’s somehow not capable of real experimentation?

I love RYM as a site and as a concept, but just as in Everywhere Else On The Internet, misogyny is still very real, and that feels present in the reception (still only a very small part — I think wayyy more people like the album than dislike it) of SAVED!

many people see “pedophiles” as a type of villain to wish infinite angry death upon, as opposed to recognizing CSA as a preventable form of abuse. the former buys into moral panic and punitive justice; the latter is actionable, helpful, and much needed

when i went to conservative christian hell school, all we heard about was the evil scary men who wanted to snatch us up on the street. we learned about csa through strange, coded language. we were not taught how to talk about our bodies, and we were not taught what sex was. eventually, i was groomed and assaulted. so were an alarming number of my peers, often by teachers and religious leaders

then, as an adult, i got the opportunity to work at a summer camp. we developed an actionable plan to prevent campers from being alone with adult volunteers; we advocated for all of our campers to learn appropriate body part language; we led discussions about boundaries and consent; we answered questions about sex with honesty, care, and age-appropriate detail. and it was safe! the one time we identified shady behavior, there were so many safety nets and protocols in place that it never became a real issue.

so, having been in both situations, it’s frustrating to see 46387 threads a day of people angrily, viciously tearing apart the mere idea of a pedophile without ever stopping to ask “hey, what can we do about this? in real life? like, what are the advocates advocating for right now?”

i hate to break it to you, but 18+ daddy kink genshin yaoi (sorry idk i’m out of touch) isn’t the issue here, and it’s kind of silly and terminally online to pretend that it is. i would argue that adult-only erotica servers that block minors aren’t as big of a threat as, you know, “minor safe!! we are very safe for minors :) and we HATE the mean nasty scary people” communities that have a piss poor accountability system and no real mechanism for preventing abuse. there’s a huge difference between “weird gross thing that grosses me out” and “unsafe situation,” and the latter is far more worth emphasizing
