Had some amusing conversations with friends this week, discussing the art on The Sheffield Guide. It seems some people don’t believe that I drew these... I can 100% confirm they are all created by my good self! 🙂 Don’t worry, it isn’t people having a go. It’s a nice compliment. Apparently they are too good to be done by me? 😂 I’d be the first to admit I am surprised I have hand-drawn these myself (well, using an iPad and Apple Pencil — who uses paper and pens nowadays! 🤣); I’ve not properly sat down and done art stuff for years until I found myself with a bit of time on my hands recently. It is also funny because I look at them and see the imperfections (nothing is perfect!) and wonder if they are good enough! I mean, I like them of course... but will anyone else? There’s a bit of ‘imposter syndrome’ going on each time I get a notification that someone has bought one and it blows my mind that people might hang something I made in their homes, or wear it on a T-Shirt or whatever. Even more so when they are shipping to far flung corners of the globe! But I really do appreciate it, and I absolutely appreciate every bit of support anyone has given me with these... it isn’t easy putting stuff out there and to see people liking, sharing and even buying them really does blow my tiny little mind. And with me and my small business falling through the cracks of government support during these COVID times it might have just saved me from going under. Thank you all so much! 🙌 Here’s the full range, along with some other bits I’ve done, for anyone who wants to give them a look: https://sheff.info/3fz0EzZ via Facebook https://sheff.info/3lzgzBV

Finally got my MacBook back from its repair at Apple! Yay! 👍 They had to replace the hard drive so all the data is gone. Boo! 👎 Oh, well... Now to quickly restore it from my Time Machine NAS Drive backup... should only take a few minut... WTF?! 😮 (at Sheffield) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB02CX0Ha--/?igshid=be5fv57uegdg

Amazing how bots have got people anxious over updates that were innocently pushed to phones weeks ago for good reasons, right when people started looking at the government’s handling of their Contact Tracing app. So, let’s look at the facts. 1) Google and Apple announced they were working together on contact tracing methods via their hardware literally months ago. They did the exceptional thing of working together because their phones don’t normally communicate with each other effectively for stuff like this so their cooperation was needed for the greater good (the UK government ignored all this and decided to try and do their own thing, which was never going to work for the reasons above). 2) They did the updates in short time and released to phones in mid-MAY (not this last week as is being suggested, and not secretly... they announced it beforehand). 3) Apple/Google’s model is decentralised. Meaning that it has privacy as a top concern (unusual for Google, I know... but Apple are always shit-hot when it comes to user’s privacy. Google can get your data from other apps and websites anyway, so they don’t care about farming this one). The UK Government’s model was basically sold out to a private company (links with Dominic Cummings and Cambridge Analytica) who wanted to farm all the private information and store it on a server. Of course, this was all supposed to be for contact tracing, but do you trust that lot with all your private data considering their track record? Thankfully the UK Government have now seen the error of their ways and is moving to the Apple/Google model. At some point. Maybe. 4) The Apple/Google model isnt an App. It is, like many phone features, a API for Apps to use. So, you’d need to download a health app (i.e. the Governments new app if/when it appears) that utilised the contact tracing elements of the software. Importantly, before even switching on that portion of software it asks you for permission (much like an app asks you whether it can use Bluetooth, or the camera, etc). 5) The restrictions the UK government are so worried about with the Apple/Google model either don’t exist and they are making them up, or are restrictions of the technology overall which their own app would have had to contend with. Want proof the Apple/Google model is OK? Look to the many countries that are already using it (and many more who are developing use of it - all of which are weeks ahead of the UK now because they understood what was happening and didn’t try a vanity “world beating” project that was doomed to failure. I’m all for criticising these tech giants for lots of things (and there are lots of things to criticise them for!), but working on a non-partisan basis for the sake of the greater good during international crisis whilst securing user privacy needs to be applauded. It is interesting to note that all the people complaining about a phone update of all things because they don’t want their information shared (I bet you blindly install most phone and app updates without ever knowing what is in them anyway) are largely the same people that weren’t bothered about Cambridge Analytica, or Facebook knowing absolutely everything about you, or the Edward Snowden revelations. The very same people who said “I don’t care because I’ve got nothing to hide” about those things without realising the real consequences of all your data being stored by people you don’t know are the same people up in arms over a phone software update that could potentially save your life. So, why are you reposting what bots are shoving at you instead of commenting on the UK government’s incompetence on this issue? (Edit: as this is getting a few shares I’ve added the BBC infographic on how contact tracing apps work and the differences between centralised(old government)/decentralised (Apple/Google) versions) via Facebook https://sheff.info/3dmOwQO
