So Cole on the mic
Spotlight Artist for the month of June 2013
J Cole “ Born MC”
by @delapublishing
www.facebook.com/delapublishing
www.delapublishing.com
Roc Nation’s own Jermaine Cole aka J. Cole will be releasing his second commercial album Born Sinner June 18. 2013, which is the same day that fellow Roc Nation artist and hip hop heavyweight Kanye West will be releasing his album, Yeezus.
J. Cole is a rapper/producer who was born in Frankfurt, Germany but raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina. J. Cole’s previous album, released September 27. 2011 and entitled Cole World: The Sideline Story, charted at the top of the rap charts and garnered pretty decent success.
J. Cole started rapping early in life at the age of 12 and started working with musical instruments soon after his mother bought him a beat machine. This purchase created the birth of a rising producer. J. Cole attended and graduated from New York’s St. John’s University. He would release his first mix tape in 2007 after graduating, but it was not until after releasing his second mix tape, The Warm U, in the summer of 2009, that J. Cole received more attention and notoriety as a rap artist. Afterwards, he was a rap feature on several projects by household names including Jay Z’s Blueprint 3 which was released in 2009. He later signed on to Jay Z’s Roc Nation label in 2010.
After releasing the single and video to “Who Dat” in the spring of 2011 to great success and also after having success with his radio hit feature of “All that I want is You” by RnB singer Miguel, in November 2010, J. Cole released his third mix tape Friday Night Lights. J Cole, then, toured with Drake, as a supporting act of the UK leg of his “Light and Dreams Nightmare” tour. J. Cole continued working with other artist and produced the single “Hiii Power” for Kendrick Lamar’s underground hip hop mix tape classic Section. 80. In fact, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar have collaborated quite heavily throughout their budding careers.
J. Cole also released a collection of amazing songs from his Simba mix tape series which included the titles Simba, Grown Simba, and The Return of Simba. Afterwards, on June 15 of 2011, J. Cole released the radio hits “Work Out” and “Can’t Get Enough” which featured Trey Songz. Many of Cole’s core fans criticized the two songs because of their commercial sound, despite the successes of them. J. Cole also opened up for label mate Rihanna on her “Loud” tour. Despite the criticism for his first two singles, J. Cole’s freshman album Cole World: The Sideline Story debuted at number 1 selling over 200,000 copies and later was certified gold.
J. Cole released his single “Power Trip” as the first single en route to the release of Born Sinner in February of 2013 featuring RnB sensation Miguel. The single has gone on to become an urban radio hit and has stuck gold status. J. Cole has expressed that after the release of his album, he will be collaborating with Kendrick Lamar more. We are sure most rap fans can’t wait to hear that “geniousnesque.”
J. Cole is a born MC. He uses the elements of rap efficiently and his greatest skill encompasses Hip Hop’s main ingredient- story telling. I, personally, think one of J. Cole’s weaknesses is his singing on tracks. Maybe he can brush that up and give it more of a raw but polished sound. However, one of Cole’s biggest criticisms is his lack of spark and personality. The way he is structured as an artist makes him hard to fit in with any niche. Some say he is boring because of his serious lyrical accumulation, plain style, and monotone vocals. Unlike Kendrick Lamar, who has a dynamic and exciting delivery, J. Cole’s delivery comes off a little bland at times. Also, in contrast to artists such as Drake, he does not exude enough emotion or charm that appeal to the ladies, and incongruent with Kanye West, J. Cole lacks a dynamic delivery, charisma, star quality, versatility, and emotion. Furthermore, J. Cole is not the hood or street guy, like a Nas, so he does not fit in with that crowd, and he is not bold, abrasive, and animated like an Eminem. He is from the south, but his rap style is more East Coast than dirty South ala 2 Chainz. Being from the south, J. Cole does not display the ignorance, pizzazz and flash, craftiness, and wit like an artist such as Lil wayne. In reality, J. Cole is similar to that starting player in the game that is overshadowed by the super star. Cole World- The Sideline Story was a solid cd. Cole reached Gold Status, and the album was not a big disappointment, but hopefully, Born Sinner can give J. Cole the recognition he deserves and propel him to higher heights as a rapper with platinum selling status despite his quiet and discreet persona.
I am hoping Cole can give us those underground vibes, insane storytelling attributes, meaningful lyrics, as well as word play, with more seasoning and dessert ala Kendrick Lamar’s album Good Kid Maad City without switching his style too much and while sticking to the roots that made his underground work recognized. I do believe J. Cole can be great being himself. The single “Power Trip” is a good start, mixing his creative story telling abilities with emotion and commercialism to satisfy the radio needs; moreover, the video visual made the song even greater.
So, on June 18. 2013, we will witness the big showdown between the rising star, J. Cole and the notorious, bright star Kanye West, and since both have the ability to rap and produce, we get to see who does this best this time around- the vet or the amateur. Who will come out on top? I am excited to see. Can J. Cole excel his predecessor, or will he hit the sophomore jinx? I believe that the album being released on the same day as Kanye West’s album will fuel J. Cole’s numbers. After all, competition is great for business. Plus, this is a smart move, because it will get people talking which would help a laid back guy like J. Cole build a much needed buzz. I see J. Cole debuting around 150,000 and not topping Kanye West, but being a slow burn that will go a little further than his first album as he releases good material and gains more momentum with more publicity. I think he will reach gold status and possibly platinum depending on how the singles fare. J. Cole is rising and the sky is the limit. Disregarding sales, which album would be better? With Kanye’s latest antics, I am leaning towards J. Cole, but we will see. What do you think?
Starting on June 11, in Miami FL, J. Cole will be presenting the "A Dollar and a Dream tour" this month for his fans. The announcements will be made for the secret locations and the tickets are first come, first served. Here are a list of the dates http://instagram.com/p/Z_ePnqlc16/

Former LaFace artist and present owner of GodFather Records, Franky Mafia, celebrated his birthday party at The Havana Club Monday, May 6, 2013, and it was blazing. There were, of course, the dancers, the performances, and the great music and drinks. Sony Music, Shawty Lo, True Legend, and Khid Flo were among those in attendance. Shawty Lo performed a medley of his hits, including "Dey Know" and "Dunn Dunn," and some new songs near the end of the night, as well. Happy Birthday Franky Mafia! Shawty Lo is expected to release his new album Bankhead Born & Raised: Carlos soon. His label D4L is currently signed to G-Unit Records.

April, 30, 2013: “News flash”- We are excited to announce that the first single by the Khid with one of the illest flows in the game right now- Khid Flo “The Bambino” is released, today, April 30. 2013. “News Flash” is a fiery tune in which Khid Flo raps atop an entrancing horn dominated instrumental. It contains captivating riffs, bold bass lines, and steady snare drums. In this braggadocios rap song; Khid Flo introduces himself into the game with basic punch lines, a catchy hook, and his signature commanding, rhythmic flow.
In “News Flash”, Khid Flo gives a certain narrative about himself, touching on the city he represents, his rap skills, motivations; his views on the game, his style, aspirations, heritage, future dreams and goals, and- based on this line from the song, “Take the throne. Who will? Answer easy, I will,”- his proclamations. In the song, we get a taste of Khid Flo’s trademark of switching between a rapid, bouncy flow to a more stable, metrical one.
Because of the catch phrase, energy, and catchy hook, the song makes for a splendid performance track as Khid Flo has tested the market to favorable acceptance. The song also has a sound that would appeal to night clubs, sport markets, sport bars, and urban radio. This single announces that Khid Flo has arrived, and he wants everyone to know, but it is not just about him, because, after all, everyone has something they want the world to know, whether they admit it or not; don’t deny it, just "tell em dat."
Khid Flo is a rapper from Atlanta, Georgia with a floetic spark. The name signifies his strength and his motto- F.ast L.ane O.nly. Khid Flo’s flow is profound, versatile, dynamic, and unconventional- his greatest skill set as a rapper. Khid Flo moves quickly, at his own pace, in his own lane; and the lane he wants to travel is towards “legendary status." Get to know Khid Flo by purchasing his single “News Flash” today on iTunes, Amazon, or Google Play, and as the song says, "Tell em that!" Follow Khid Flo on Twitter @khidflo and like his Facebook at www.facebook.com/khidflo.

Spotlight Artist of the month: Yelawolf
One for the South
@delapublishing Like our Facebook
Trunk Music Returns & so does the South
“I’m a Fire Start- Hot Damn! That’s why everywhere that I go, they try to put me out… I’m A Fire Starter… Yeah I’m a Problem”
“Fire starter” is the lead track on the new mix tape Track Muzic Returns by Michael Wayne Atha aka Yelawolf. The song starts with a bass line beat that sounds like feet marching with ticking beats going along as a few simple keys play repeatedly on a keyboard machine. Later on some “coos” come in and a few more instruments join the bass line and ticking drums, most notably a piano. The song is a hype song with a resolute, well created hook, but not all songs on the mix tape are hype, club songs. You have introspective cuts, riding songs, dramatic, emotional, personal narratives, rock and roll hip hop, and storytelling.
Yelawolf hails from the lost state of Alabama. Not many rappers come out of that state, and another uncommon is that Yelawolf is a southern white rapper. Most of Yelawolf’s music is riding music with loud beats and hard bass lines. His vocals are gritty and rough. Image wise, Yelawolf looks like a country bamma, skater kid (which he is). On the Trunk Muzik Returns cover, Yelawolf is in a close up picture wearing dark shades, a shaggy beard, and tattoos all over his body. He looks rugged, rough, and country, like a country rock star. Yelawolf represents the country people in most of his songs, and although Yelawolf raps, his songs have a rockfish feel to them.
Yelawolf has a Nelly, southern, Bizzy Bone type of rapping style. His country dialect flows fast, furious, and fiery over booming beats like a race car. Then, at times, his flow is a little slower and captivated by strong end words that connect each hit of the beat with force, giving the Tennessee and Texas rap vibes of Eight ball and MJG, 3- 6 mafia, and UGK. Catfish Billy is Yelawolf’s moniker; this is when he raps a little more raw and vicious. The lyrics are playful and unruly. Yelawolf’s lyrics are not mind blowing; but, rather, the rhythmic, quick, and energetic flow is hard and deliberate and also his biggest strength. One key feature of his flow is that he goes through a track saying many words with many syllables in one bar. It’s like his rap style becomes like a drum line on the beat, itself, if you listen closely.
On Truck Muzik Returns, the production makes the mix tape. Trunk Muzik Returns starts slow, but midway through, it picks up steam and becomes more igniting. Highlights of the mix tape are “Fire Starter,” “Hustle” ft. Paul Wall, “Catfish Billy,” “Rhyme Room” ft. Raekwon and Killer Mike, “Gangster” featuring A$AP Rocky and Big Henry, and “FAME.” I was not feeling “Box Chevy,” because Yelawolf was not really rapping on it, just chanting over an annoying and busy drum beat that was surrounded by flangers.
Yelawolf is currently signed to Eminem’s Shady Records, which may explain why when Yelawolf turns to Cat Fish Billy, it is reminiscent of Eminem transforming into Slim Shady- angry, obnoxious, manic, frank, and psychotic. Another similarity to Eminem is Yelawolf’s ability to do the crazy sounding “sing songy” chants.
Unlike most new rappers, Yelawolf has been hustling and grinding to get his due shine for some time now, releasing albums, videos, a slew of mix tapes, EP’s, and singles since 2005. He was even signed to Def Jam and dropped. He didn’t give up on his dreams, though. So, if anything, he deserves props for his dedication to the game. Yelawolf was first seen by Americans on Missy Elliott’s reality TV show, The Road to Superstardom with Missy Elliott in 2005. He did not win, but he kept driving on that road to superstardom.
Capitalizing on the promotion he received by being on the show, he released a mix tape called Pissn' in a Barrel of Beez, which was followed by an independent album called Creek Water. The hard work paid off, because, soon after, he was picked up by Columbia Records and later dropped by them, but still continued to release more music and mix tapes, and none of his mix tapes have made an impact like his mix tape Trunk Muzik has, so far.
After releasing the first mix tape Trunk Muzik in 2010, he built a solid fan base and was signed by Interscope. In 2011, Yelawolf signed with Eminem’s Slim Shady, and put in even more work releasing mix tapes, songs, videos, and collaborative EPs, and shows. In the summer of 2012, Yelawolf released his mix tape Heart of Dixiewith fellow Alabama producers, M16 and DJ Frank White. He, then, released his album Radioactive for the commercial audiences, but the album received lukewarm results.
In 2012, Yelawolf released a few collaborative mix tapes- one with British singer, Ed Sheeran called The Slumdon Bridge, and another with Travis Barker called Psycho White. Trunk Muzik Returns has features from A$AP Rocky, Raekwon, Killer Mike, Big Henry, and Paul Wall. Yelawolf’s sophomore album Love Story is expected to be released in the summer of this year through Shady records. After the release of Trap Muzik Returns, will Yelawolf’s sophomore LP catapult him into the big leagues of the rap game? Will it do better than his first album release, Radioactive? Yelawolf does stand out from others, but, I think, his style of rap and image is only fitting for the rock and mainstream crowds. I believe that Yelawolf will need a strong appearance on Eminem’s new LP, which is expected to be released sometime this year, and he must also get Dre to produce some tracks for him to really shine in the rap, rock, and pop game just as Eminem has done. I always find it interesting how Eminem take these underground artists and market them so much differently than he does his own projects. Get a load of Yelawolf and download Trunk Muzik Returns on Livemixtapes.com here.

Spotlight Artist of the Month
Another score for the west coast
School Boy Q is ready to school these fools
By: De La Publishing @delapublishing
February 3.2013-- Quincy Hanley, better known as School Boy Q is from Germany but was raised in Los Angeles, California. He is a part of the Black Hippy movement that consists of LA rappers Kendrick Lamar, Ab Soul, and Jay Rock who are all on a journey to bring life back to west coast hip hop. So far, School Boy Q has released two mix tapes and two albums. His first album was called SetBacks and was released independently on January 11. 2011. The album told of a story of everything that was setting Q back from success. Setbacks debuted on Billboard's Top 100 and did pretty well for an independent album. The album helped established a core fan base for School Boy and so his life changed. The next album, Habits and Contradictions was released a year later on January 12. 2012 and debuted on the Billboard 200 charts. Defined as “the prequel to Setbacks,” Habits and Contradictions sold more than Setbacks and helped School Boy move further up the ladder of success.
School Boy Q was an army child born in Germany. After his parents split, his mother settled in Los Angeles where he resided. School Boy was a smart, athletic kid in school and that is where his stage name, “Schoolboy," was developed. Although School Boy Q was an intelligent child, he was not smart enough to stray away from peer pressure. Early on, he was influenced by the environment he grew up in and made poor decisions. He started gang banging and selling drugs as a teen. The poor decisions later led to a felony arrest as a young adult. This arrest fused School Boy into getting more serious with his music. After grinding with music as his new love, the independent record label, Top Dawg Entertainment found Q and eventually signed him. Soon after, Black Hippy was formed among him and his label mates. In late 2012, after releasing two mix tapes independently, Top Dawg Entertainment signed a deal with Interscope records, making School Boy Q and his Black Hippy label mates major label artists. In much of 2012, School Boy Q hit the road touring with label mate Ab Soul. School Boy has said in several interviews that he felt music saved his life. If that is the case, then he owes a lot to music.
School Boy Q has a versatile rap style where he can come at the listener laid back and nostalgic or hyper and wild; However, he is at his best when he is spitting over jazzy, laid back instrumentals underneath melodramatic, soul driven beats. Throughout his catalog you hear some of his best art transform. This is when he becomes a spoken word type rapper who speaks truth that touches souls with tales of life, love, loss, pain, and glory. He transforms into a “school boy,” schooling his listeners so to speak. School Boy Q’s rhymes are not overly complicated, but the meaning behind the rhymes is where the depth is felt- the emotion, the mood, the story behind the words.
Although School Boy Q’s music can be deep and profound at times, he can also let his guard down on tracks that less serious minded hip hop listeners can vibe to. Songs such as Druggy’s with hoes and Hands on the Wheel display the wild world of School Boy Q, the fun world of fantasy with no limitations. In these tracks, School Boy kind of plays with his simple flow by adding salt and pepper. Mainly, he would change his voice, add in sound effects, or pen an over- dramatic drag on the end words of rhymes with the same onsets almost reminiscent of his good friend on the east Coast- A$AP Rocky. In fact, School Boy Q can be the west coast version of A$AP Rocky, and this is probably why we hear these two rap together so often. They create magic together.
If you take a listen to School Boy Q’s tracks, you can see that he definitely has something different and unique to bring to hip hop’s table. He raps with no rules, and this is probably his biggest strength. School Boy’s new major label debut album, Oxymoron, will be released sometime this year. So, look out for that and support. This is most definitely a must have for hip hop listeners to support in 2013. For more information and updates on School Boy Q, visit http://www.topdawgmusic.com
While waiting for that new School Boy Q album that I’m sure will be classic, get acclimated to School Boy’s rap style by listening to some of his stand out tracks.

KHID FLO WANTS TO "LET YOU KNOW" ft vocals by the late great Aaliayah
by delapublishing @delapublishing
Khid Flo wants to Let you know that he is ready attack the rap game with his promo video for "Let You Know," which is featured on Khid Flo's mix tape FAME.
Khid Flo is the new Khid on the a block- a new rap artist hailing from Atlanta, Georgia with an energetic, dynamic flow and striking charisma. In the song, Khid Flo raps with fiery and blunt delivery using his signature flow pattern, switching from fast to slow flows and vice versa over a mellow, melodious, drum heavy, emotional instrumental. The song is sparked by the gracious, silky smooth, and all so pleasant vocals of the late great multifaceted singer/dancer/actress/model/ entertainer, Aaliyah Haughton; who left us all to early after a tragic plane crash took her all life on August 25, 2001 after shooting her video for "Rock The Boat" off of her classic, well produced album "AALIYAH." Her legend lives on and Khid Flo pays homage with this track which uses her soothing vocals so thoughtfully from her hit song, "At Your Best"- an Isley Brothers remake that was recorded in the singers earliest years when she was just a teenager on her debut album "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number."
"Let You Know" is produced by Chance, a skilled up and coming producer on the rise. You can hear Khid Flo's mix tape FAME here http://www.datpiff.com/Khid-Flo-Fame-mixtape.377925.html. Enjoy and let us know what you think.

SPOTLIGHT ARTIST OF THE MONTH- A$AP Rocky shines for the East Coast
“Harlem’s what he’s reppin…”
by Dela Publishing @delapublishing
Jan. 14. 2013
The east coast rap scene has been quiet for a while in the commercial arena, but now we can hear a little noise there as Harlem rap artist A$AP Rocky is making his presence known quite quickly. New York City’s own Rakim Mayers aka A$AP Rocky storms into the rap game with quick success putting Harlem rap back on the map. He brings style, pizzazz, and flash that his home town is known for. He calls himself pretty, wears long dresses with Timbs, a gold grill, talks about purple swag, and he even used to rock a perm with a pony tail. Harlem rappers are famous for their flashy, interesting styles and simple, catchy bars (Camron and the diplomats, Ma$e, P. Diddy), and once you look at Rocky with the thick braids, gold grill, and unique fashion sense and then hear him spit, you can feel that Harlem influence.
Although A$AP Rocky grew up in Harlem, New York, you can also see his appreciation for other parts of the country; quite notably Texas and the West coast. His flow and image is kind of reminiscent of Eazy E with the braids and the slow rhythm, heavy flow, but he has a less gritty delivery. He also uses a lot of the chopped and screwed up sound that originated in Texas.
A$AP Rocky’s rhymes are mainly not very subjective. His typical subject matter revolves around fashion and flash, getting high, bitches, sex, bottles, pimpin, etc. As you continue to listen to A$AP Rocky, you will hear the Bone Thugs n Harmony influence in his music; mainly when when he raps faster and does the sing songy, chanty raps over orchestrated instrumentals, but in most songs, A$AP Rocky tends to use a slow delivery. He’s not very lyrical, but he is a flow rapper. His flow and delivery is very deliberate and unique. You usually hear him rap several bars rhyming the same end schemes in his songs. With all that said, he does have an old school demeanor to his appearance and rap style but adds a hinge of new school flash as well. A$AP Rocky brings a melting pot of sounds from all across the nation to the rap game. I think this ability to blend genre specific sounds in his music style and delivery as well as the old school/ new school mix can help him dominate the rap game nationwide because he can attract such a versatile fan base. He already seems to have a pretty heavy international following.
Rocky began rapping at age five. His father was later arrested for dealing drugs, and his brother was killed outside of his apartment. He, then, endured being homeless with his mother for years. These acts propelled A$AP Rocky to drive harder with his rap skills. He shined brightest as a member of the underground group A$AP Mob, which is a group of rappers, video directors, and music producers. This was where A$AP Rocky got his name. Each group member’s name has A$AP in it, and the acronym for A$AP means “Always Strive and Prosper” which was fitting towards A$AP Rocky’s struggles as a young guy.
After the success of YouTube videos Peso and Purple Swag, things took off quite fast for A$AP. He gained notoriety, a solid fan base, radio spins, and a deal with Polo Grounds, Sony, and RCA. The success of YouTube videos also helped A$AP Rocky garner a tour spot opening up for Drake’s “Club Paradise Tour” in February 2012 and a performance with Rihanna at the MTV video awards. Not to mention a few decent collabos and album appearances with artist such as Rihanna, Usher, and T.I. to name a few. The mix tape, LongLiveA$AP, was released in October of 2011 and since then things have propelled quite smoothly.
A$AP Rocky’s current single Fuckin Problems is doing well on billboard peaking at number 22 on the charts and number 5 on the R&B hip hop charts so far. Who would think otherwise with features by every big named rapper of each major region in North America of the moment- A$AP from the east coast; Drake, the biggest of them all, of Canada; 2Chainz of the south; and Kendrick Lamar of the West Coast? A$AP Rocky’s movement reminds me a lot of Wiz Khalifa’s before he blew up and joined the pop rap world. I can see A$AP going the pop rap commercial rout after his statements about wanting to see Rihanna’s fame. Will A$AP Rocky stay true to his underground roots or slide over to the big commercial pop world of rap and is he the future New York King of rap?
We will find out how A$AP Rocky's hard work pays off when his commercial debut album LongLiveASAP is released this month on January 15.2013 with a nationwide tour to follow. Although A$AP Rocky does not sound like anyone currently relevant, and we can’t expect everyone to be subjective, I just hope he will expand the topics on the album. Will A$AP Rocky live up to the hype? Will this project help his star rise or fade? I predict he will do first week numbers in the 100-150K range. What do you think? There will be some big features on the album. All in all, I think A$AP Rocky has worked hard and has created an album that his fans will appreciate and that will appease diverse rap and hip hop listeners across the nation. Album Review: The Weeknd's “Trilogy”
By: De La Publishing @delapublishing
December 14, 2012
Who is The Weeknd?
R&B music comes to us hard, blunt, and care free through the voice of an addict- Canadian R&B singer, Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd. The Weeknd came to the industry as a surprise by uploading their tracks on YouTube in 2010; therefore, it was his YouTube tracks that granted him critical acclaim, a fan base, and attention from fellow Canadian, Drake, in return. On November 13, 2012, The Weeknd released “Trilogy” through Universal Republic Records and his very own XO label. The album opened up with favorable numbers being that The Weeknd is, generally, still an underground artist. He debuted at number 4 on the US billboard 200 with first week sales of 86,000 copies and at number 5 on the Canadian charts. (Some established R&B artists can’t even do these numbers these days, so this goes to show all you underground artist out there, that there is hope) I know you have all heard The Weeknd's vocal prowess on Drake’s urban hit song, Crew Love.
The music The Weeknd creates infuses old school r&b with new school in the most exciting way, and he adds a new twist to the commercial r&b that exists now without compromising the musicianship or soul. The songs are filled with sensation, passion, and romantics and creates a hypnotizing effect. There are also lots of drug references in The Weeknd's music as mentioned earlier. Listening to his music takes the listener on an emotional and psychotic high. Whether you are a chronic drug user or not, or even if you are not a believer of all of the subject matter in the music, you should appreciate the artistry. Honesty is a part of art, and this is what The Weeknd gives us.
Trilogy Up close
The Weeknd expresses alcoholism, drug abuse, sex, one night stands, pain, and the party life style through a musical diary in this well structured piece of art. “Trilogy” combines Weeknd's three mix tapes, “House of Balloons,” “Thursday”, and “Echoes of Silence.” The subject matter is raw, gritty, depressing, honest, brutal, and powerful- such ugly details, yet so beautifully displayed. I never heard such a well- structured, poetic exhibition of the fast, risky, drug infested life in R&B form until I heard this album.
Album Track Ratings:
House of Balloons (Disk 1)
High for this (8/10)- Very sensual. I feel that Weeknd is introducing the listeners and his female fans into his world, his music, his life, and he wants them to take it and enjoy the experience as if it’s their first time experimenting with drugs. The guitar rift brings the best out of this track, and it has great production that’s fitting to The Weeknds crystal, smooth vocals.
What you need (8/10)- A song about how needs overrule wants. Weeknd compares his grants to that of a drug. While engaging in an affair, he gives reason for his actions. He encourages the girl that while her man may give her merely what she wants, he can give her what she needs which is pure sexual satisfaction. The instrumentation is very romantic.
House of Balloons—(9/10)- Is the fast life filled with hard core partying really a happy one?
Glass Table Girls (7/10)- This has portions of "House of Balloons." It goes deeper into the setting and paints a more vivid auditory picture for the listener. With descriptions of a huge drug binge, Weeknd’s vocals are diminished. it starts off sounding more like a talk/sing rap, but towards the end Weeknds smooth tenor vocals come in.
The Morning (10/10)- This is one of my favorite songs by Weeknd. The soulful instrumentation takes the listener on a special journey. It gives the listener a blues type feel. Weeknd’s soft vocal’s ride the instruments perfectly. How can Weeknd make a song depicting strippers and those who are motivated by money sound so beautiful? The poetic lyrics and drug analogies in reference to his growing career, along with the production helps give this track an A +.
Wicked Games (10/10)- Another favorite. More drug references, but I’m too lost in the production and vocals to really notice. Weeknd looks to a stripper to help cure the pain he is feeling in his own relationship. Great single choice.
The Party after the After Party (7/10)- This one has a depiction of Weeknd’s relations with a party girl whose strung out on the drugs.
Coming Down (10/10) I'm in love with this one. It speaks on how the drugs and partying is affecting his relationship, and when he’s no longer high, he notices he’s lonely and wants his girl. She wants him to quit the drugs and hard partying, and he’s trying, but those things are acting as a solution to his life problems. As most of his work suggests, this song is so psychologically honest, and you gotta appreciate that.
Loft song (7/10)- Nice flow on this one. What happens in Weeknd’s Loft? If you can only imagine, then listen to the lyrics. Respectful ladies, keep away. The falsetto action at the end of the song is flawless.
The Knowing (10/10) There are very nice vocal arrangements in this. It is a beautiful ballad about two people living a lie. She cheated on him, so he cheated to feel better, but he hides behind phony feelings to disguise hurt.
28 (9/10)- This one talks about the regrets of hooking up with a stranger in a club and letting her in his heart, but she turns out to be a dirty, sleazy nightmare in his life. It has very nice vocal arrangements.
Thursday (Disk2)
Lonely Star (8/10)- Pain and regret is like the girl who is the subject of Weeknd’s love interest in this one. She is lonely, sad, and constantly makes bad decisions. Weeknd wants to lure her into his circle insisting he could give her “it all” by becoming his lonely star, but it ends in a one night stand, and he becomes only available on Thursday, so she becomes his Thursday girl. Take note: Thursday is the day that is closest the Weeknd.
Life of the Party (5/10)- Although, this fits the story and theme of the album, I don’t really like this one. Weeknd takes the innocent, good girl in "Lonely Star" and turns her out. Sad.
Thursday (7/10)- Weeknd lays down the rules of being with him. This is for the Thursday girl. Weeknd only allows her his time and attention on Thursdays. There are absolutely no strings attached in this relationship. Again I say, “Sad!”
The Zone ft. Drake (9/10)- Weeknd is too high to even care for the girl he is making love to, but he will make sure to do it right for his own self assurance. He won’t remember her or attach feelings because he is too drugged up. Denial and depression are heard in these lyrics. Drake adds a hot verse talking about saving a stripper by showing her some love. It gets him in his zone.
The Birds part 1 (10/10)- This is the ultimate player warning and another one of my favorites from Weeknd. Weeknd encourages women to not fall in love with him, because he is no good for them. Birds don’t stay in one place too long. Good message.
The Birds part 2 (10/10)- I guess the girl didn’t heed Weeknd’s warning in Birds part 1. Now, she suffers the consequences on “Birds part 2.” She’s stuck and in love with a cheater- a bad place to be.
Gone (9/10)- Weeknd attempts to introduce the girl he met to a night in his life- drugs, drugs, and more drugs- in hopes that it will break her conscious and loosen her up. In theend, the drugs messes up the whole mood. Weeknd is really gone by the song’s end. The experience in this song is crazy- Drug binge to a total crash explained in music. Wow.
Rolling Stone (10/10)- This is the after effects of a drug infested one night stand. Weeknd’s answer- more drugs. A Rolling stone= Weed and Ecstasy Rolling stone = Weeknd’s life of rolling from woman to woman. The song starts off with Weeknd and the chick together but not knowing or remembering how they got there. Is it really about a chick or is it us?The acoustic is amazing on this one. It almost sounds like Weeknd is referring to us, the listeners, the fans of his music, as he was underground, if you listen deeper. “I got you. Baby, I got you. Until you’re used to my face and my mystery fades… So, baby, love me before they all love me… I’ll be different. I think I’ll be different, and I hope you’ll still listen. But until then, baby I got you.” This song is deep and amazing.
Heaven or Las Vegas (7/10)- Instrumentation is masterful in this track. Weeknd is high and is involved in another one night stand. He chose sin over morals like most. Depressing.
Valerie (8/10). Weeknd comes to the realization that he is in love with a girl named Valerie in this song, but because of his past, how would anyone believe that he is ready to be completely committed and in love with one girl? Or maybe he will never let it be known, himself, because he has a reputation to uphold.
Echoes of Silence (part 3)
D.D. (7/10)- This is a remake of Michael Jackson’s “Dirty Diana.” It is hard to redo a song by the "King of Pop," Michael Jackson, but with Weeknd’s vocal pitch and falsetto, I can see why he would give it a try. Then again, the lyrics to this type of song does go well with Weeknd’s theme. I will just end it at that.
Montreal(9/10)- The first part of the song is French speaking saying that falling for a girl may cause them to hurt you, so hurt them first. Weeknd wants the love from the chick, but he does not want it to come too easy. He likes a challenge. She gave up trying too easy as well.
Outside (8/10)- Weeknd takes another man’s girl to add to his one night stand collection, and he treats her better than he could ever.
XO (7/10)- One of the chick’s Weeknd got strung out with is now feeling the effects of all the drug use and partying. She is now stuck into a lifestyle she can’t keep up with all because of dealing with Weeknd.
Initiation (5/10)- Why do I think this song has to do with a sex train or a drug binge (the boys being his drugs) initiation? Not good for such a beautiful composition. Lyrics fail this one unless I interpreted wrong.
Same Old Song (9/10) Weeknd gets back at a chick who he loved. She dismissed him before the fame and notoriety, because she didn’t think he was good enough to be with her, and she didn’t have faith in his dreams as a musician. She didn’t want him then, and he doesn’t want her now. I could have done without Juicy J’s random speaking part, though. WHAT?
The Fall (10/10)- Set in the strip club, Weekdn is using an analogy between drugs and his career again, it seems. He likes the buzz and is prepared for the peak. He will enjoy thehigh for as long as it can last, and he is not afraid to come down or fall, because he has been down before, and he is sure he can get back up.
Next (10/10)- The Weeknd is dealing with the insecurities that come with the come up towards fame. He is in a strip club and being taunted by a stripper who he is feeling, but he knows that he is not there to fall in love; The stripper only wants him because he’s the next big thing, and he won’t risk it.
Echoes of Silence (8/10)- The song of a woman taking the risk and trying to trick Weeknd into giving her a chance in hopes that she can change his cheating ways. This is the story of when a woman begs for a cheater to stay and expects more out of a one night stand. “Baby please, would you end your night with me? Don’t leave me all behind. Don’t you leave my little life.”
Till Dawn (Here Comes The Sun) (10/10)- The situation flips. Weeknd becomes the remedy of a stressful relationship. A woman is stressed out with her man and her solution is to have continuous one night stands with the one night stand king, Weeknd, to calm her stress. This song touches on the various emotions of a cheater looking for what is missing in an unfulfilled relationship with a person they love.
Album Summary Rating:
The Weeknd’s voice is refreshing and the album is structured very well. In addition, the signature wail gives the tracks an essence. The smooth, tenor vocals, instruments, and tantalizing hooks, not to mention, the strong, lyrical finesse, blend together in grandiose feel- good harmony to the ear. This is, no doubt, one of the best R&B albums of the year and is worth the buy. Trilogy helps breathe newer life into the commercial R&B genre, which is slowly dying.
Note to Listeners: Although, I feel, The Weeknd overdoses this album with the drug and alcohol references, hardcore sex, and female manipulation, it does not seem to make him redundant, because, on his tracks, no matter what the subject is, you kind of get lost in the track's production and implementation; it’s like listening to a good, drama-filled book. I found myself sad, angry, and happy, wanting love, wanting to dance, feeling relaxed, thinking, and shaking my head sometimes while listening to this remarkable album.
The Highlights: The Weeknd's vocals, the blunt, lyrical compositions, and the astonishing productions by Doc Mckinny and Illangelo are the highlights of this album. The Weeknd’s tenor vocals and falsetto are mellow and smooth and ride over energetic instrumentals. I can hear influences of such artist as El Debarge, Maxwell, and Eric Benet. Although The Weeknd’s vocals are better, his vocals are also reminiscent of The Dream's vocal style and a little of Akon's vocal style as well.
Low light: I admire The Weeknd’s grind from top to bottom when he was an independent artist, and R&B definitely needs voices and artists like The Weeknd. Although, The Weeknd has found a very good balance of success just through hustling and grinding, it would be nice to hear Weeknd make music that instills love without the drugs and alcohol, strip clubs, etc. It would also be good to see him use his excellent writing skills to go outside his life and provide songs with other meanings while injecting different types of emotions inside of the listener's ear; He absolutely has the writing skills, voice, and proper ear for the music to do it. I feel if he goes beyond the typical subjects he is now known for, then his career would skyrocket to another level.

Joey Bada$$ (or JayOV)- The Brooklyn Kid
By: delapublishing @delapublishing
A young kid out of Brooklyn, New York plans to take hip hop back to the drawing board and bring an old school soul sound to the mainstream. Joey raps with an old school sound that is accompanied by lyrical puns. Joey uses the early 90’s production techniques while rapping over simple drum lines and jazzy sounds, channeling the boom bap style made famous by DJ Premier of Gangstarr, J Dilla, Pete Rock and others. His mix tape features many reprises of some of these influences.
While rapping over laid back, funky, jazz, soul instrumentation and some scratching, but with very little flash and crash that most rappers use today, Joey’s lyrical manifestations are not over powered by the beats. His subjects mostly consist of his environment, struggle, hardship, counsel, and survival. Joey Bada$$ is like a diamond in the rough for traditional Hip hop MC lovers. His production and lyrical style resembles flows of old school artists like Lord Finesse, early Nas, Wu Tang, Big L, A Tribe Called Quest, and Mobb Deep. Joey’s strengths lie in his old school style, cold flow, word play, and knowledge of hip hop traditions. His sound is fresh and necessary for the times we are in.
While in high school, Joey joined a large hip hop group called the Progressive Era under group founders Capital and Steez and Pow. This group contained over twenty members of Joey’s friends and high school class mates. Under the leadership of this organization, Joey has picked up a large online following. In 2010, at just 15 years old, Jonny Shipes, President of Cinematic Music Group ( Big K.r.i.t) took Joey under his wing after seeing him rapping on the world star hip hop website. Shipes set Joey up with the online TV network Creative Control TV, and they filmed the highly successful “'Survival Tactics'” video which spawned the release of Joey’s first mix tape, 1999. The mix tape received positive reviews from many respective outlets, includingSpin magazine, XXL and Pitchfork Media. This also helped spark the interest of underground rapping sensation, Mac Miller. Joey and Mac later released the song "America" on Youtube. Joey followed this up by releasing several other very successful videos as well.
Can Joey’s dreams of bringing old school hip hop's boom bap style to the mainstream forefront come true? I feel that Joey is a very skilled MC, and there is definitely an audience for his music. I do, however, feel sorry for him in his journey towards mainstream success, because he may have to conform some of his style to some mainstream methods, but I do not believe he should conform to these methods at all (ala Jay Z). Nevertheless, not all artists have to go mainstream, but since Joey expressed interest in that avenue, this is my perspective, but anything can happen, right? From the looks of things, Joey seems to be going in the right direction already. Plus, at the tender age of 17, Joey has time in his favor. Let us know what you think. Look out for Joey’s songs. His latest two mix tapes, 1999 (2012) and most recent Rejex (2012) which was released this year.

A Girl on Fire
Alicia Key’s Girl on Fire Album review
By: Dela Publishing @delapublishing
November 27th, 2012: New York's own, musician and singer, Alicia Keys, has had a long and successful career filled with accomplishments. She took the world by storm after her first album, Songs in A Minor, was released in 2001. Her first album, under the power of the single, "Fallin," helped Alicia grab a number one album and numerous Grammys. Following this, Alicia spawned many hits, and she sold millions of records domestically and globally- 6.2 mill in the U.S. alone. Following, many compared Alicia to such great musicians as Prince and Stevie Wonder. To say the least, these are excellent feats for a female in the RnB contemporary music genre.
Alicia Keys has been actively in the game now for over a decade. As time went on and the music industry changed, Alicia's album sales have diminished. Her last album, Element of Freedom did not receive as much acclaim or sales as the previous three, but it still managed to go platinum, selling 1.5 million domestically and 4 million worldwide. Element of Freedom was released in 2009, and so it's safe to say that Alicia's fans are ready for more new music. These fans finally get their wish today on November 27. 2012 with the release of Girl on Fire, Alicia's fourth studio album. It is my desire that this album will continue Alicia's platinum chain and world wide dominance in a genre that's changed drastically and has started to fall quickly.
Girl On Fire Track Review
De Novo Adagio (Intro): 10/10- The CD begins with a nice, pleasant, relaxing piano composition. Way to kick off an Alicia Keys album.
Brand New Me: 10/10- The piano composition from the intro blends into Brand new me. This song is beautifully written and crafted. Scottish Singer/ Songwriter Emeli Sande' (check her out) collaborated with Alicia to create this one. Alicia Keys speaks on change in a good way by becoming stronger, confident, self assured, and more in tune with you, and she speaks on how some may have a problem with that positive change. Her vocals are controlled pretty much throughout. This song fits the album theme perfectly.
When It’s all Over: 8/10- Vocals are a little all over the place, but the grit fits. I liked this one more on a second listen. This one speaks on how loving a person is the highlight of a person’s entire life. Egypt, her son, makes an appearance. How cute. I’m assuming that since this one features baby Egypt, that this song was written for him. It made this song that much more beautiful. That fact along with the instrumentation and melody is a highlight. In addition, this track kind of puts you in a trance.
Listen to Your Heart: 7/10- This one is ok. The message and lyrics are a little bland. It’s a very easy going song, but it is not one of my favorites.
New Day: 7/10- This was a slept on single. It was a very positive, fun, upbeat, feel good song definitely needed on the radio right now. This was another song about confidence and striving for something good in life. I guess radio is not quite ready for songs with these messages just yet. Hopefully they will be soon.
Girl on Fire (Inferno remix) featuring Nicki Minaj: 9/10- Great single. This one is doing pretty well on the charts and has made the most noise on i tunes. Besides the strained vocals, I loved the message in this one, and you get used to Alicia’s hoarse vocals after a few listens. This is a song of strength and girl power. Nicki Minaj makes an appearance that many of her primary fans should be proud of. This song is lyrical and subjective, and the message fits the purpose of the song. Nicki was a great addition and a highlight for this remix. Hopefully, more verses like this will come from Nicki Minaj in the future. I look forward to that. The message, beat, and melody is another highlight. Females need more of these songs. Big Ups to Alicia for this.
Fire We Make: 8/10- This is the sexy track on the album. It is a love making song. Maxwell adds vocals to this one, and Alicia couldn't have gotten a more better fit. Maxwell and the guitar rifts add so many elements to this track.
Tears Always Win- 10/10- This one has an old school feel. It is about losing someone. The instrumentation, background vocals, composition, and the melody is a highlight.
Not Even a King: 10/10- On first listen, I fell in love with this one. This is also another Emeli Sande' assisted track and another one of my favorites on the album. The lyrics are beautiful, and the musical composition is top notch. The message is also the high light. It is a message that says, "No matter what great physical possessions, riches, or high statuses others may have, it can’t compare to the love that she has for her companion." Their love over powers it all. I prefer Alicia’s softer vocals. They go great with the piano.
That’s When I knew: 8/10- This composition on this song is great. This is a love song about when love first became apparent in a couple's love life. Alicia’s strained vocals and background vocalist complement this one.
Limitlessness: 7.5/10- No limit to love. This one is upbeat, and the beat is dance-able. It speaks about how the love between two people have no bounds. The repetitive lyrics ride this beat and makes this one catchy.
One thing: 10/10- After a second listen, this one became one of my favorites quickly. This starts off as if Alicia is talking to a lover that left her. The song tells a story about losing a worthy love and how much you would do to gain it back, and how she would keep the one thing that’s theirs and cherish it over everything. She says “This one thing that was made for us, chasing us, saving us. I’ll take one thing over everything. I’ll take that thing over anybody.” The vocal arrangements in the chorus are the highlight. Alicia’s falsetto is not so bad either. Plus, the harmonies are beautiful. The instrumentation has a melancholy sound which adds to the mood of this song. It is a soulful and emotional track. I think with Alicia’s smoky vocals this type of song fits her the best.
101: 8/10- There is no beat in this one, just instruments. Midway through the song, it changes speed. This one is about blaming yourself for putting up with mistreatment. Alicia is screaming, "Hallelujah!" and seems happy about something.
Summary Review
Alicia’s voice sounds like it’s been through a lot. She may need to start singing in a softer tone to save it. Her songs have more melody to me when she does that anyway. After a while, the hoarse vocals and shrieks seem to fit with the musical structure. I love the fact that Alicia is a subjective artist and a skillful musician. When an artist like her leaves for a while or takes a break, you always find yourself appreciating her presence in the music game.
GRADES:
Style: A
Creativity: B+
Lyricism: A
Vocals: C+
Vocal arrangements: A
Instrumentation: A+
Structure/ Mechanics: A
Versatility: A
Commercialism: B
Overall: B+
Low Lights: The only down fall for this album is the strained vocals, but, honestly, after a few listens, they really don’t affect the album much. They begin to fit right in with the mood of the songs. The lyrics, structure, melodies, and instrumentation also assist that flaw. I feel that for a commercial RnB album, Alicia did the best she could to fit in with what is going on today. There are not a lot of upbeat tracks, but there are some. Yes, some may complain about Alicia’s hoarse vocals, but did people complain about Stevie’s whining nasally tone? (I'm sure some did), but it was what made him special. So, what about the music?
High Lights: The album is structured very well with the song picks, and this one may be one of her best releases. Depth lies in this release. The girl on fire theme rings throughout in various ways. The songs on Girl on Fire speak on diverse, lyrical subject matter and Emeli Sande's assistance left a strong imprint on this album. They make a great team (Check out some of her work. She is a skilled writer).
Listener Advice: Although, some songs grab the listener right away, I feel that you tend to get more out of most of the songs after another listen. The album is a mature RnB album, and I would go as far as considering it one of the best RnB drops I heard this year, so far, as well. RnB needed this album. It adds depth to the sex, sex, sex, club, sex, commercially infested RnB dynamic that exists in most albums released lately, so it is very refreshing.
Total Rating: I give the album an 8.5 out of 10. This is one worth having and is good for RnB music in general, especially in the female category. Big ups to Alicia.
Music lovers, pick the album up on Amazon, I tunes, or in a store near you on Tuesday, November 27.2012. If you love music, you will not be disappointed with this one:

Question to Ponder:
RnB sales have been abysmal this year. I appreciate this type of album because it is necessary for the urban, commercial audience. Someone like, Adele, can make an album similar to Girl on Fire and get tons of accolades, praise, and sales as a reward, but these days, in the urban commercial world an album like this can easily get overlooked and forgotten. It is tough for artists in the RnB genre these days because of what has been programmed into our ears for the past few years. Club bangers have taken over urban radio and RnB and what does not fit the status quo is typically a needle in a haystack.
Or, the labels expect the RnB artist to water down their music and pop it up for more mass media support. While some of the listening public, enjoy this change, the mass majority of the urban listening public has been fed up for some time now of not getting what they long for, so they have drifted away, gave up on the genre, and simply have no interest in supporting any new music on a whole scale that involves RnB. Instead, these consumers settle with what they hear on radio every once in a while (most of which they feel is not worthy of supporting) for their pleasure.
RnB is facing the same fate as rap/ hip hop music. Because of so many disappointments and so much redundancy that has saturated this market, the traditional ideas of what to expect from RnB albums has been twisted, molded, and corrupted. Thus, every artist, even the talented ones, take the fall these days. It was not always this way, but, I think, mass media and radio has a lot to do with this fate in RnB music that we are seeing. Hopefully, this changes asap for the sake of the genre.
I do feel, however, that it is up to the music lovers to save this genre by supporting albums such as this one by Alicia Keys so that the media can follow and have no choice but to pay attention. Then, others will take note and maybe life can be breathed back into RnB, versatility will live again on commercial radio, and people in this market will be excited about album releases again. That is my take on this subject.
Can Alicia gain the heart back from the buying public with this album? Can she restore the direction RnB music has taken? I really hope Alicia succeeds with this one. If you want RnB to survive and you care about its development, support this album. Every RnB lover should pick this one up and add it to the collection.

Dreams and Nightmares Album Review
By: Dela Publishing @DelaPublishing
We remember Meek, the hood kid from south Philly freestyle rapping on videos around his hood. He was only 13 when he started hustling, working towards his passion, and making noise all over the East coast with videos and mix tapes. That noise spread further south. TI’s Grand Hustle signed him first, but things didn't work out there. He did a short bid, time passed, and in 2011 he was signed to Maybach music. They cleaned him up and gave him a pathway out of his nightmares. We have a new young rap king in the game- Meek Mill, one that moved past his nightmares to reach his dreams.
It’s always inspiring to hear an encouraging coming of age success story; A story about how hard work truly pays off. Under Rick Ross’s wing, a couple of mix tapes and key features, Meek went from underground hood kid to making noise in the commercial world real quick after he was signed. He is now one of the hottest rappers to release for the streets this year under Maybach Music group. Meek Mill talks about his dreams and nightmares in his first album debut, Dreams and Nightmares. The album's creative cover immediately shows that this album is worth grabbing. It fared pretty well the first week with sales of 167,000. The album is aimed at the commercial rap world and the streets, and they are responding.
Dreams & Nightmares (Intro) (9/10)- Meek starts rapping over an instrumental with no beat. The beat comes in midway through the song and Meek’s standard fire and brimstone delivery takes over and his emotions come out matching the switch on the instrumental. This song is mainly about his come up from nothing to something when he had the braids and was rapping in the rooms. Good way to start the album. Nice beat also.
In God We Trust (7/10)- This is a song about the love of money and money’s power.
Young and Gettin’ it (6/10)- This is another money over everything song and how Meek’s money making ways attracts haters. Kirko Bangz makes a feature on this one and so does his specialized effect. This one is ok, and I’m sure it’s just right for some audiences, but it’s not one of my favorite.
Traumatized (9/10)- This track is an ode to the lost ones in Meek’s life- mainly his father’s lost and Meek’s emotions behind it, which were vengeful. This song speaks on staying guarded. The highlights are the nice beat, and the stormy sounds add to the tracks pain.
Believe It (6/10)- Rick Ross premieres on this track. It talks about the life of a drug king lord getting lots of females for sex, lots of artillery, nice cars, fresh clothes, and of course lots of money. I guess this is equivalent to the life of a king.
Maybach Curtains (8/10)- This track has a nice hook and a nice change of demeanor for the album. I was longing for more versatility. This one is about how Meek’s Maybach has changed his life. He reminisces about his past and speaks of change. Imagine going from undergrounds to having the hip hop legend, Nas, featured on a song with you. Nas makes an appearance. Ross is also featured again. John Legend sings the hook.
Amen (4/10)- I wasn’t really feeling this much. This release almost made my support for Meek vanish. It is a typical song about clubbing and females; the pimp lifestyle. The metaphor is bland and tasteless. The beat does give it hope. It is a low light in my opinion and a bad choice for a single. Drake could have been on a better feature for Meek, but his verse was decent.
Young Kings (6/10)- This is a song about the Good life. “Young Kings, young king, young kings. All we know is one thing, one thing, one thing. Get the money and fuck fame’” says it all.
Lay UP (8/10)- Here is one for the ladies. Ross makes yet another appearance; Talk about supporting your artist. Wale adds a nice verse, and Trey Songz sings the hook.
Tony Story Pt. 2 (10/10)- I loved the first Tony Story. This one is just as serious for many of us rap fans that love the art of storytelling in the music. This one really makes this album worth having. The instrumental is also a highlight on the album. The Lyrical skills also were a plus. This is a favorite.
Who Your around (10/10)- Mary J bilge sings on this one. Meek speaks a truth before the song starts. This one is about betrayal, change, jealousy, and how friends turn on you. Great lyrics. Another one of my favorites. At this point, I’m just noticing the album is starting to show more versatility and seeing flashbacks of the old Meek.
Polo & Shell Tops (9/10)- This one is on repeat status and is pretty good. I think it is single material. The beat, lyrics, and delivery all connect, and it fits the theme of the album. Another one of my favorites. It shows hope of success in a different way from the majority of the tracks in the beginning of the album.
Rich & Famous (8/10)- This one chimes about the lifestyle of the rich and the famous. I really could have done without another one of these types, but I guess it fits the whole dreams part of the title. It’s one of the better ones. He speaks about this one girl he wants to add to his lifestyle and how you can’t live the life without changing the girl's lifestyle that you want to pursue. Louvie V sings the hook.
Real Niggaz Come First (7.5/10)- This song is basic, not bad but not that great. For some reason, and I don’t know why, but I like the hook a lot. The beat is heavy. I think this will be a favorite for Meek’s target audience.
Burn (8/10)- This is one of my favorite single releases from Meek. The beat is raw and fits Meek’s fiery delivery. Big Sean is a good addition to this track and this is a very catchy song.
Freak Show (6/10)- A nice gift for the strip club enthusiast. It has a nice, danceable beat and vulgar lyrics. What more can you ask for in a strip club track? 2 Chainz makes an appearance on this. This is his niche, so the feature is fitting.
Summary Review: This album goes a long way from Meek’s mix tape days where he spoke about his struggle and trying to reach his dreams. Well he reached them, and the music speaks. The lyrical skills changed a bit as well. Meek is a good rapper and was so even in his mix tape days. I was really drawn to his energetic flow, however, I just think it is not always needed. He needs to switch up his delivery a bit. Yelling over the track the whole time is like having an exclamation point all through a book. It takes away the effect. He also had way too many features. It’s nice to see an artist deliver an album primarily on his own or by being a relatively underground artist. I like the theme of this album, but I just feel like Meek could have given us the same theme of his album without just making it about money, money, money and the bitches he attracts. It could have been more versatile. Nonetheless, Dreams and Nightmares is a solid debut and has many highlights.
HIGHLIGHTS: The highlight of this album as expected was that the hooks are strong and the beats drive the album. It is energetic and thematic.

OVERALL RATING: Dreams and Nightmares is not bad and it is not classic either. It is average atbest. With some polishing, Meek’s next album could be above average. However, the album is worth having, and if you like commercial rap, you have to add this one to your collection. I can hear many radio singles on this one and songs like the “Dreams and Nightmares Intro,” “Tony Story 2”, “Polo and Shell Tops”, and “Traumatized” really show Meek’s skills and abilities on a top rated scale. But for the shortcomings I listed above, I rate the Dreams and Nightmares a 7.5 out of 10- not bad for a debut album. It’s always good to have room for improvement and growth, because now Meek can focus on the short comings and embellish the strengths for his next album. Meek has proven himself to be a hard worker and is one of the better commercial rappers out here these days. He speaks for the streets, and that audience is always hungry for music directed their way. I wish him much success. Support Meek, and pick up the album

The Good Kid, m.A.A.d City album is just what I expected out of Kendrick Lamar's commercial release. The stories are prevalent and relate able, and it is overflowing with lyrical prowess. This CD is subjective and conceptual, but the music also offers enough hype surrounding the beats and flow dynamics for commercial interest. Good for Kendrick with first week sales of 242,122 bowing in at number 2 on the billboard charts and spawning the number 1 rap album in the country. I'm a bigger fan of the mix tape Section. 80, but this one definitely serves its purpose on a commercial level.
Review Album Track Ratings- Take a journey through Good Kid, m.A.A.d City with me:
"Sharane" (9/10) This one brings Kendrick's storytelling over soulful instrumentals that we all fell in love with from his mix tapes to his album. The funny voice mail adds to the track's story. I am wondering why this song starts the disk, but we'll see as I play along. I must add that this song does introduce Kendrick Lamar's style to the audience perfectly and it has a cliff hanger. It keeps you on edge. What happens next? What happened to Kendrick? "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe" (8/10) This is a very laid back, funky track. The highlights of this track is Kendrick's dynamic switch up flow and amazing wordplay.
"Backstreet Freestyle" (8/10) This one seems like filler to me, but it fits the story in a way. This one reminded me a lot of Kanye West. 3rd verse was mad. Nice beat.
"The Art of Peer Pressure" (10/10) Great message in this one. The intro hook is a bit weird and long in my opinion. After the song starts, it's the Kendrick I became a fan of. Another great story. One of my favorites on the album.
"Money Trees" ft. Jay Rock (10/10) Catchy and nice soulful beat. Jay Rock makes a respectable premiere in this one. One of my favorites.
" Poetic Justice" ft. Drake ( 9/10) This one is already making noise on Billboard and i tunes charts. The Janet sample works. Nice one for the ladies. Drakes addition makes sense as well.
" Good Kid" (10/10) Another one of my favorites on the album. However, it would not be a single obviously because it is not very radio friendly.
" M.A.A.d City" ft. MC Eight (9/10) I love the hook and the beat in this one.
"Swimming Pools" (10/10) This track has a nice blend of storytelling and commercialism. This is a great commercial hit for Kendrick, and he also stays true to his style while bringing it. I love everything about it- the instrumentation, the flows, the hook; Plus, it has a nice message as well.
"Sing about Me" (9/10) Very compelling song.
"Dying of Thirst" (10/10) This song has blends from Sing About Me. I love the instrumentation in this; It's very emotional and contains powerful lyrics.
"Real" (9/10) Wasn't really feeling the hook on this, although the verses were poetic. I give an A + for verses, and a C for the hook.
"Compton" (7/10) Dre makes an appearance here. I wasn't really feeling the hook on this one until the end when the voice box was used. Good introduction for following track though.
"Recipe" (9/10) Nicest beat on the album in my opinion. It puts the Cali, west coast connection in perspective, and Kendrick could use one more like this on the album. This is a great radio friendly track and lead single. Dre makes a second appearance, but it may be too much Dre to where it seems like Kendrick is the feature.
"Black Boy Fly" (9/10) Another weak hook. Kendrick needs to brush up on the hooks. However, there are no complaints on lyrics and story. I can say that this one is pretty motivational.
"Now and Never" (7/10) another motivational tune from Kendrick Lamar. This could be classified as upbeat. Good ending, but I still don't understand why the album started with "Sherane" and ended like this, but after more listens, I may see that point.
SUMMARY REVIEW: While you listen to the CD, you tend to get lost in the plot. Being that this album came from an artist out of California, it makes sense that this album is a movie, and the interludes add to the entire album's concept. The album definitely puts the west coast on the map, because the west coast sound, environment, and style are all prevalent in the album. As I felt before, early Kanye West influences are present. The album also gives me a comparison to Andre 3000 that I didn't see previously. I am wondering why Ab soul wasn't on this one. The only downside was there was not enough up beat tracks, and some of the hooks could have been better. I'm not saying take away the soul in the music, but just add more bang to a few of them, because the album is very laid back throughout. I also wish that there was another "Rigamortis" type, heat spitting joint. "Backstreet Freestyle" was close but no cigar.
I am currently curious about how Kendrick will change over time as his popularity grows. I am a dedicated fan of Kendrick Lamar since his mix tape days and I must say that much respect goes out to Kendrick for staying true to his skills and sounds and not conforming too heavily to the typical, commercial expectations. I hope he remains this way. Hip hop needs this inspiration.
HIGHLIGHT: The highlight of this album is the structured plot.

New Artist to look out for- HOPSIN
www.delapublishing.com @delapublishing
Marcus Hopsin aka Hopsin is another ill MC as well as producer out of the west coast that we are watching. Wow, the West coast is on a roll trying to get their respect in the game back. Hopsin was born and raised in Los Angeles. He dropped out of high school to pursue his dream in music. His claim to fame comes in the form of youtube videos and mixtapes. Hopsin has released several mix tapes and 2 studio albums, Gazing at the Moonlight (2009) & Raw (2010). He was signed to a raw deal and ineffective deal with Ruthless records, which is now controlled by EAZY E’s late wife, that sparked venom from Hopsin. Hopsin felt misrepresented and disrespected and made it known through a few heated songs. Recently, he has made it clear that he is not interested in a major by turning down many deals, and he has made it clear, as well, that he is not in this for the money. He has stated that he is succeeding quite well and is content as an independent.
The Ruthless Records situation caused him to start his own record label and production company called Funk Volume, which was started in 2009 with Damien Ritter. Hopsin has since been releasing songs, videos, and mixtapes, and has been touring nonstop all through 2012. Sounds pretty successful to me. Check out the website for more information on Hopsin and other artists involved with Funk Volume at http://myfunkvolume.com/. Hopsin’s youtube videos have gotten rave reviews and millions of views. He was also included in XXL Freshman Class of 2012.
As far as his music goes, Hopsin is not the politically correct, clone MC we see often. What makes Hopsin’s unique is his MC style. Most would label his music as alternative, hardcore, conscious hip hop. It is dark but has a little light between the darkness. Hopsin is his own person; however, his Eminem influence is quite apparent. Many have taunted him as “The Black Eminem” because of his passionate, outspoken, uncaring, and brutal flow. He is not afraid to speak on his strong beliefs in his music and his strong disdains. He is also not afraid to appear vulnerable. No one is exempt from being a target of Hopsin’s vile lyrical assassin. He has criticized many popular acts and pushed many unpopular opinions in his music, and, surprisingly, has created a huge buzz by doing it. Many times he does his music by instilling positive messages. The "Ill Mind of Hopsin" is a few installments of Hopsin’s truest most critical thoughts.
After being pushed back several times for improvements, Hopsin’s album “Knock Madness” is scheduled for release in 2013. Hopefully, it gets a date that it sticks to so we can immerse into this ill mind of Hopsin for real. Pick up Hopsin’s Raw if you haven’t already. http://www.amazon.com/Raw-Explicit/dp/B004BJN70G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1349655801&sr=8-2&keywords=Hopsin+raw

“Keep us in our hoods and hope we never explore paths. Stay inside of your half. Believe the lies you learned in your class, that there’s no treasure in your trash, that the ceiling has the same feeling that a floor has…Build Ya own stations, become ya own DJ's!”- Lupe Fiasco “State Run Radio" Book Spotlight of the Month
Lies My Teacher Told Me by James Loewen
“Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” ― Jim Rohn
Since we are in the Columbus Day month I decided to make the book spotlight a spotlight on historical inaccuracies. Amerigo Vespucci really discovered America, but we credit Christopher Columbus for this feat for some reason. I mean, this is the same guy who called the Native Americans Indians; a name that sticks to their cultural identity even today and is totally wrong. (Look at sports). The American way seems to be to give credit where it is not deserved and fool the people by pulling wool over their eyes to keep certain people ignorant and left in the dark. This is a form of enslavement if you ask me- a way to keep those at the bottom there.
Due to the way of people, history has a way of being tainted. We see the conflicts and inaccuracies in the Bible- the most sacred and informative book in our history. But what about the history that is being taught to our children in schools? Is the truth really provided?
Education can be tricky. It can be a means to and end or an ends to a means. Would you believe it if I told you that education has been used to destroy cultures in this country just as religion has been used to pit people against each other? Do you ever wonder what happened to the Native Americans?
Well, education, along with power and control, had a large part to do with their demise. They were taught that their culture, methods, and beliefs were wrong. The plan was to take the land and educate the youth to take on “other ideals.” This method was the most damaging because as those young people grew, they became more disengaged with their own culture due to what they were taught. The same situation has happened to Blacks and other ethnic minorities but in an opposite manner. Black slaves were apprehended for learning to read because the whites knew that if they knew too much, that would be the first step to the end of the slavery train. Knowledge is truly power.
Looking at the alarming statistics about education, especially in low income urban areas, makes me wonder is education being used as entrapment or a tool for hope? When you know better, you do better, because you know when you are being mislead or misused or lied to or manipulated. Claire Fagin said it best, “Knowledge will bring you the opportunity to make a difference.” This book, “Lies My Teacher Told me,” is a book we all should read to understand the misinterpreted history we have been given. The best way to be educated is to educate yourself. Research- find out what the truth really is? It is worth knowing because it is not cool to be a dummy. You can find the book here. http://www.amazon.com/Lies-My-Teacher-Told-Everything/dp/0743296281/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1349657156&sr=1-1&keywords=lies+my+teacher+told+me or a bookstore near you.

Hip Hop Group: Slaughter House making a come back!
What happened to hip hop groups that made great impacts on the hip hop imprint?
The Hip Hop movement is customary through the successful groups that gave the genre justice, such as NWA, Public Enemy, Cash Money’s Hot Boys, Little Brother, and my all time favorites Bone Thugs and Harmony, Wu Tang Clan, and Run DMC. All of these groups were innovative, unique, and had a voice that spoke to the depths of our souls.
Slaughter House vs. Odd Future
We have a couple of hip hop groups that are trying to make noise currently. Shock rappers, Odd Future, released their first group debut, The OF Tape Vol. 2, earlier this year and has yet to break sales of 100,000 even though the group has had successful outcomes in their performances. Hip Hop group, Slaughter House, has also released their debut album this past week on August 28. 2012. It was called Welcome to: Our House (Cop that). Although Slaughter House, released a debut album in 2009, it acquired mediocre sales and had small shipments, but this recent one has major backing and a little better marketing campaign behind it. They even established a promotional tour before its release, so which group is better between the two?
Welcome to: Our House
Slaughter house is a group signed to Shady and Interscope records and formed by Eminem in 2008. This group combined some of hip hop's most gifted but underrated underground lyricists who couldn’t get the credit they deserved. The group consists of Royce da 5’9 from Detroit, Michigan; Joe Budden from Jersey City, NJ; Crooked I from Long Beach, California; and Joell Ortiz from Brooklyn, NY.
Rap Heavyweight and top hip hop seller, Eminem, produced, is featured on, and mixed the album. It has received rave reviews by hip hop critics, but I wonder does it have the right promotional package to be accepted by the buying public. How will it fair? Will this Eminem assisted album help these talented MC’s get the full credit they deserve? Will Eminem’s Slaughter House reignite the interest back to groups being formed in hip hop? Can this cd crack 80K in sales the first week or will this group be just another D12?Check back to find out!
My favorite member of this group is Joe Budden. I have been following Budden since his debut. I always liked his deep, melodramatic song content and his blunt, straight forward rap style and lyrical abilities. Hopefully this opportunity will give him another chance to shine and establish a true legacy for himself since he missed out on that chance as a solo emcee the first ime around. Are you checking for Slaughterhouse? And who is your favorite member of the group, if you have one?
Check out a few highlight tracks and freestyles from the group as well as some of the singles released by them from the new album. Also, make sure to support that new album Welcome to: Our House online and in stores now.
