Built in 1906 on Leipziger Platz and designed by architect Alfred Messel (1853-1909), the Wertheim department store was one of the most famous commercial buildings in Europe. After an extension in 1906, it was also one of the largest: it included a spacious glass-roofed courtyard, numerous elevators and an enormous range of goods under one roof.

It's not history but I like it. Bouke de Vries for Dries Van Noten.
He reclaims broken pots after their accidental trauma, calling it ‘the beauty of destruction’. Instead of reconstructing them, he deconstructs them. Installation on display at Galerie Quai Malaquais, Paris, until March 12th.

Koloman Moser, marbled paper technique, 1904. Vienna, via Leopoldmuseum
For this age-old process a shallow tray is filled with oil paints which are then made into patterns or various motifs using a needle or marbling comb. Subsequently, a piece of paper is dipped into the tray to absorb the paint. These papers were either used as endpapers or covers for books, or as autonomous artworks.

I am always amazed how modern, how minimalist Dresser has designed in the over-decorative Victorian age, decades ahead.

Naum Gabo, Linear Construction NO. 1 , 1963/64 (Design 1942/43) Via Kunsthalle Hamburg
In the 1930s, the Russian constructivist came across models that mathematicians had built from wire, wood and fabric threads in the 19th century. They were used to visualize geometric formulas and thus a hypothetical space in the real world. Gabo created works of art in which he worked in a similar way. He wound spin two nylon threads around acrylic glass plates, an exploration of space with the means of art. The British sculptor Henry Moore commented on Gabo's artworks in 1983: "His structure always became space itself."
