These are in reverse order, but it seems I may have found what is causing the hydraulic lifter noise. I’m pretty sure that there is supposed to be oil dripping out of the rocker arm shaft, but there isn’t. I tried priming the pump by removing the distributor and driving the oil pump with a power drill, but nothing came out. I then tried priming the pump with oil under the distributor, and still nothing came out. So now I’m left wondering if I have a failed oil pump or if I put the head gaskets on the wrong way. Guess imm have to go back through my pictures to make sure I didn’t do it wrong. Ok, I got the valve covers off, and can see that many of the pushrods and rocker arms are loose at top dead center. But I don’t actually know that to do now. 😂 maybe I’ll turn the crank one more time to be sure and try swapping the rocker arm shafts because I honesty can’t see any other adjustments I could make. But I’m dreading getting all the #permatex coated cork gasket off the heads. Luckily I got rubber gaskets this time so if I have to do this again it hopefully won’t be as painful. Also, I’ve started listening to #lordoftherings while working on the car. Got through #thehobbit and am now on #thefellowshipofthering. So I learned something tonight that I SUCK at setting timing. I swear it woulda gotten it done quicker if I had just put the distributor in randomly over and over 🤦🏻‍♂️. Well the lights all work and the car turns over, but the battery is extremely low and one of the ignition wires is missing the connector for the spark plug. 🤦🏻‍♂️ new ones get here in like a week. So I’m going to get a battery charger so I can at least set my idle timing right while I wait. So it’s ALMOST all back together. Last tonight I cleaned off and painted the underside of the hood and this morning i cut out and pressed on the insulation. Then put all the other pieces back in with the exception of the radiator overflow and the alternator. Putting this monster back together. It wasn’t easy, but it was easier than I thought it would be. So now I’m paranoid that I’ve done something wrong. I still need to tighten up the bolts connecting the bellhousing to the engine and put the motor mounts in, but it’s at least connected. I picked a hell of a day to do this, making the break lines for the Galaxie. 98° outside today, and muggy as hell in the garage. But it is done, now I just have to hope that they fit with the engine back in. Will have to try that next weekend. A very important part of car ownership is to make sure your engine gets enough exercise. And when it’s not in the car that means taking it for walks so it stays healthy and strong. After the whole bolt extractor debacle I decided to ask a friend for some help and pushed my motor around the cul de sac to his house. He tried to weld a bar to the broken exhaust manifold bolt and get it to break loose, to no avail. So I had him weld some threaded rod onto it so I can secure it with a nut instead of a bolt. It’s not original, but it will work. Some of my #ratrod mindset coming back. This is me pushing it back to our place after he was done. Got my brake lines delivered today, so I’ll get to start bending them into shape too. I’ve started putting Natasha back together again because I might be going back to school in a few months and I want to be able to drive her on weekends and such. Today I put the booster for the new brakes in and finished putting the bumper back on. I still haven’t been able to get the broken exhaust manifold bolt out but I’m trying to figure out what I want to do with that. So for now I will do everything else I can. Finished painting the side and front of the engine compartment. Next will be bolting things back on and taking off the steering box and emergency brake. Getting closer to putting pieces of the front back on. I’m gonna show my lack-of-car-guy knowledge here but I don’t actually know what this area is called, but I know a lot of crap bolts onto it, and now I have the front part of it painted. Some more of the #por15 paint and prep stuff. “A day may come when I am done using #por15, when I am finished with this undercarriage and under the hood work, but it is not this day. A day of cruises and trips to the drive-in when this engine clangs and fires to life, but it is not this day. Today I paint!” After prepping these #bumper, #grill, and #hoodlatch parts yesterday I got down to painting them. Turned out pretty good and I only got a little bit of the paint on me, which means I’ll have this black spot on my wrist for like a month.
