You know what? F*** it, I'm gonna write cringe fanfiction as an adult
I'm not a teenager anymore but I still indulge in fandom. And the thing about hitting your mid-twenties and still simping for fictional characters and getting the itch to write fanfiction is, for me anyway, I felt like I was supposed to outgrow this by now. I have multiple degrees, I'm in a happy, healthy relationship, I pay rent and have a full time job with benefits and everything.
Yet here I am, still in the same mental space as when I was seventeen.
Thing is, I'm a writer. Have been for as long as I can remember. And the other problem with hitting my mid-twenties and not being where I want career-wise is I'm suddenly afraid I'm wasting my time, that getting this job was a mistake that is starving me creatively because suddenly I'm dedicating nine hours a day to my job and don't have the time to write anymore (which I know is BS because I can totally make time, I just don't).
I've fallen into the same trap that every artist eventually falls into once money gets involved: I'm not writing for myself anymore, I'm writing for a publisher. A publisher that doesn't exist since I haven't been published yet. I have SO MANY ideas and I want to write them down but as soon as I go to do that I just can't make myself. It's like my brain is too exhausted.
So I'm issuing a challenge to myself. The most obvious fix for this is to set up a writing routine for myself that I do every day. It's how I was able to write my first novel. And to get it started I'm going to write and post something that can't make any money: a cringey af reader insert fanfiction that I've been planning in my head since 2016. It has to be this one specifically because a lot of my other fanfiction also falls into the trap of "But what if I scratch off the serial numbers and publish it as an original work?" F*** that. I want to write something that publishers wouldn't bat an eye at but readers would actually enjoy. With updates once a week or something. Because in the end, writing fanfiction isn't financially viable but it's better than not writing anything at all.

I’ve been on a romance novel kick recently and the cover art caught my eye in the bookstore and I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. But I got something out of this book that I wasn’t expecting: some hidden bits of writing advice here and there. It sometimes took attention away from the story itself but I found it enjoyable nonetheless.

First time someone seriously told me to smile more.
I work at the circulation desk at the local library, and overall I love my job there, but sometimes people just drive me nuts.
I was having a long day. I work two jobs and had been on the go from 6:30 in the morning for my first work shift at 8:30 AM and was scheduled to work at the library that afternoon until close at 8 PM. So roughly a 12 hour day, with a break in the middle for me to go to a counseling appointment.
We were set to close in about an hour and a half, and this guy comes up with a bunch of material he wants to check out. So I'm doing my thing and he keeps cracking lame jokes. I'm sort of half-smiling and nodding as I'm doing my job. Then he says, "You know, I read your job description. You're allowed to smile on Wednesdays."
Honestly, it's not the worst thing someone has said to me since I've started working here. I've had patrons yell and curse in my face, throw library cards at me, flirt and be inappropriate, and accuse me of being lazy because I sat down for a moment. All of that is just part of working a public facing job, and I am VERY aware that when compared to other public jobs like retail or food service, I've got it easy. But for some reason, this stuck with me and I felt like saying this:
I work two jobs because one isn't enough to make rent and my car payment. I've been diagnosed with ADHD, GAD, and moderate depression. I'm a full-time grad student. I was working a 12-hour day that day. It was also a Down day for me, where I just feel kind of sad and nervous but I can't quite tell why. I've been seeking out escapism through fandom more and more because I just need a break, which ironically makes me feel worse because I feel like I'm being immature. Not to mention I had just been handling a DVD someone returned in the book drop that may or may not have had urine on it.
THAT is why we hate it when you tell us to smile more. If we aren't smiling, there's a reason.
Don't assume that we're just being moody. Don't dismiss why we aren't in the mood to smile. Don't try to tell us to smile because "we'd be prettier" aka more enjoyable/comfortable for you to look at.
I'll smile when I feel like it.

Every 21st century piece of writing advice: Make us CARE about the character from page 1! Make us empathize with them! Make them interesting and different but still relatable and likable!
Every piece of classic literature: Hi. It's me. The bland everyman whose only purpose is to tell you this story. I have no actual personality. Here's the story of the time I encountered the worst people I ever met in my life. But first, ten pages of description about the place in which I met them.

This is so true for so many artists. I have to remind myself of my I want to be a writer so many times. Easiest way to do that is think back on stories that I wrote when I was a kid and try to remember what it was like to write just for fun. Sometimes I’ll even just sit down and rewrite those stories. Because sometimes I just need to write a story about a princess rescuing her sister from a tower without any underlying goal other than I just want to.

A comic to try and sort through some difficult feelings about being an artist and a reminder to not forget who you are.
