A Post-mortem of Mini Gamer
Mini Gamer was an idea brewed in my head after playing the infamous Cookie Clicker game. Personally, I have always enjoyed playing upgrade and unlock games and this was the perfect opportunity to create my own. I was amazed to see a classmate almost as enthusiastic about the game idea as I was, this being the foundation of our production group for the year. Not only were we relearning Unity3D at the time, but also trying to create a 2D game in a 3D engine. During this project we had many things that went extremely well, and many things that went terribly. WHAT WENT WELL 1) Creating a Visual Style Basing the visual style of our game on Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas and Playdead's Limbo was a very entertaining way to go about stylising our game. Trying to limit our assets to only using black and white for the colours and also trying to keep them looking retro (pixel based) was a lot of fun in itself. 2) Creative Brainstorming
Working as a group will surely always have its own down sides, but for this entire project those negatives were negligible. Having another creative mind at hand, my group collogues mind in particular, made creating game ideas super easy and very effective. Our group, working both ways, would post a question and have it answered within the next minute. Your group collogues idea would spawn ideas in your head, which would further the ideas in their head, this being the creative snowball methodology we used during the entire project.
3) Working Around the Bumps With small errors occurring more often than we had liked to, a lot of changes had to be made to our game. However, most of the fixes would be very simple to execute and almost as good as the original idea we were trying to implement into the game. With such an open game idea in the first place it left a lot of room for altering our game on the go. A few of the mini game's mechanics were made off pure happy accidents, where we try to achieve a certain mechanic in the game, see how it is working while it is "broken" and then just keeping that as the final game.
WHAT DIDN'T GO WELL
1) Compilation Making each game separately at the time seemed like a great idea, it allowed us both to work from different work spaces and not need to constantly update each other's files. Once we had completed and were happy with all 6 mini games we thought all that was left to do was make them all work together, this was easily the most difficult part of the project. Our lack of research led us to think you could, essentially, just click and drag the games and they would all work together. Here began the endless hours spent on recreating each game in a new Unity project.
CONCLUSION
Looking at what we have now in comparison to what we thought our idea would originally look I couldn't be happier with our final result. This project has been a very fun, but challenging learning experience for the both of us. We would like to apply the skills learnt this year to carry on working together in the future and create new games, even further develop this one.
