CANCELLED: The Story Of Newt!
Tumblr media
ARTICLE BY: Eric Wolfe
With Pixar’s newest film Cars 3 racing in to theaters this weekend, I wanted to take a look back in the past. The powerhouse that is Pixar Animation Studios has been cranking out movie after movie, hit after hit (with some debatable titles), since their first full length computer generated film Toy Story in 1995.
We’ve meet everything from talking toys, bugs with big dreams, monsters who live in our closets, a robot who finds love, the last remaining animal of his kind and his journey to save his species. WAIT that wasn’t Pixar, wasn’t that Blue Sky Studios Rio?
Tumblr media
Well truth be told my friends, the plot for 2011s Rio was very similar to a project Pixar was working on themselves called Newt. Here is a statement made about the movie from a 2008 Disney press release...
“What happens when the last remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet are forced together by science to save the species, and they can't stand each other? That's the problem facing Newt and Brooke, heroes of "newt," the Pixar film by seven-time Academy Award® winner for sound Gary Rydstrom, and director of Pixar's Oscar-nominated short, "Lifted". Newt and Brooke embark on a perilous, unpredictable adventure and discover that finding a mate never goes as planned, even when you only have one choice. Love, it turns out, is not a science.”
Tumblr media
Newt was originally slated to come out summer 2011 becoming Pixar’s twelfth film and was pushed back to 2012 to make room for Cars 2. It was later said that Pixar’s Brave (at the time known as “The Bear And The Bow”) and Monsters Inc 2 (which we know now as “Monsters University”) would come out summer 2012 and fall 2012, and once again Newt was pushed but this time with no updates on a new release date. In May of 2010 the movie industry heard word that Disney and Pixar was taking it out of their upcoming releases, and essentially cancelling Newt. John Lasseter Disney/Pixar animation head declined to comment, but someone within the studio did state....
“We have taken newt off of our development schedule to allow our creative teams to focus on these upcoming projects”
Tumblr media
Newts director Gary Rydstorm was moved to the short Hawaiian Vacation which came out in front of Cars 2 in 2011.      Since the cancellation of Newt lots of beautiful concept art has come out for the film.

Will we ever see Newt? I highly doubt it, but with Pixar we never know! Newt was announced and was in the public knowledge for a small period of time. If you are any kind of Pixar fan you know they love to hide easter eggs throughout their movies, and well Newt, cancelled or not is no exception!
Tumblr media
To my knowledge Newt references can be seen in both Toy Story 3 and Brave.
In Toy Story 3, there were several easter eggs present in Andy’s room, a poster of Finn McMissile from Cars 2 (the following Pixar Movie), a postcard form Carl and Ellie from Up, but theres also a sticker of a road sign with, yup a NEWT!
Tumblr media
In Brave the references is with all the others really in the witches cottage. A newt can be seen as one of the ingredients she needs for her magic spell.
Tumblr media
Then theres this little guy from The Good Dinosaur. Not quite sure if its suppose to be a reference but I like to think so!
Tumblr media
In 2014 Ed Catmull (one of the founders of Pixar) stated that before they finally decided to cancel Newt they passed the movie along to director Pete Docter. Pete essentially took on the project but had his own idea for a better story and movie. Pete told Catmull and Lassetter about his idea for Inside Out! The rest is well history, in more ways than one.
Tumblr media
I hope that we someday can have something with Newt, whether it be a short or a The Art Of Newt book, Id like to see something. Its kinda interesting to think that even the mighty powerhouse that is Pixar couldn’t save this film, but its a testament to what Pixar is all about STORY!       Thank you all for checking out this article! Make sure to share with other Pixar and Disney lovers in your life. Ill be doing more Cancelled articles in the future so please follow along for the ride!

Tumblr media
Tuesday afternoon has been jam packed with The Walt Disney Company announcing numerous dates for their upcoming movies.
“Star Wars Episode IX”, “The Lion King” remake, “Frozen 2”, and “Indiana Jones 5” have all been announced. All four films are highly anticipated for both the fans as well as for the company.  “Star Wars Episode IX” will change the holiday season release pattern previously set with Episodes VII and VIII, with an early Summer season release date of May 24, 2019. The ninth installment to the Skywalker saga will be directed by Colin Trevorrow, who directed the “Jurassic Park” revival “Jurassic World”.
The live-action remake to the beloved animated film “The Lion King” will be released on July 19, 2019. The film will be directed by Jon Favreau, director of the 2016 live-action remake “The Jungle Book”. James Earl Jones is set to reprise his role as Mufasa. Donald Glover will play the part of Simba, with newly announced Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen playing Timon and Pumbaa respectfully.
The sisters, Anna and Elsa are back on November 27, 2019 when we head to Arendelle once more for “Frozen 2” ! Both Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, who voice the beloved sisters took to Twitter to announce their excitement.
Lastly, we have the great team up of Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg for “Indiana Jones 5” set to release on July 10, 2020!  With announcing these four highly anticipated films the Walt Disney Company did have to play some shuffle with other films. “A Wrinkle In Time” was pushed up from April 6, 2018 to March 9, 2018 taking “Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” slot. “Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” will be pushed back to November 21, 2018, which was the previous release date for “Gigantic” now slated to open November 25, 2018. “Magic Camp” will take the previous spot held by “A Wrinkle In Time” on April 6, 2018.
Thats not all! Disney also announced that they will be pushing back the untitled live-action fairy tale they had slated for July 28, 2017 to August 3, 2018, but did not state which live-action fairy tale is coming to the big screen! At this moment in time the studio has numerous remakes in the works and it could be any one of them from, “Dumbo”, “Mulan” to “Aladdin”.
