Massive Attack - 100th Window (07.11.2023, Album Review)

„...digital paranoia, political tumult and anti-war sentiment...“ (Ed Power, The Independent, „Misunderstood masterpiece or unmitigated disaster? Massive Attack’s 100th Window at 20“)

Zu diesem Album gibt es keine Feierlichkeiten, keine Rückblicke (Ausnahme siehe oben), keine Wiederveröffentlichung mit Special-Edition-Bonus-Tracks. Nicht einmal der Tod von Sinead O'Connor hat die Tracks in meiner Bubble wieder sichtbar(-er) gemacht. Schon zur Zeit der Veröffentlichung wurde das Album eher kritisch aufgenommen. Lt. meiner Erinnerung schrieb der Kurier damals, dass die drei Songs mit O'Connor die besten des Albums waren. Bei einer Live-Review war der Kurier froh, dass gegen Ende der Show Lieder der früheren Alben auf der Setlist waren. Visions beschrieb es so: „Mag sein, dass das hier der Tiefpunkt im Schaffen der Band ist, dennoch befindet man sich hier auf einem verdammt hohen Niveau.“

Ich sehe es anders: Seit 20 Jahren ist 100th Window eines meiner Lieblingsalben.

Mitte der Nuller Jahre habe ich mich durch Noise Rock, Post- und Industrial Metal gekämpft. Die ewig langen und ewig langsamen Songs von 100th Window fanden vielleicht deshalb instant ihren Platz in meinem Kanon. Und genau deswegen nicht im allgemeinen Kanon.

Was mich zuerst beeindruckt hat, war die Bassline von „Special Cases“. Dunkel und kalt genug um einen MTV-Trailer für Rock am Ring 2003 zu untermalen. Das zweite: Die Empfehlung eines Freundes als Soundtrack für zweisame Stunden. Dann die Faszinationen für den verzerrten Nicht-Gesang, Nicht-Rap von 3D. Die Drums, die weder TripHop, Rock, noch Dance sind. Und dann wieder „Special Cases“, über dessen Text von Sinead O'Connor habe ich Stunden lang gegrübelt habe. Am 10.04.2010 hat ein Freund das Musikvideo zum Song auf Facebook geteilt und ich habe folgendes drunterkommentiert:

The Chemical Brothers – For That Beautiful Feeling (Review, Album, 27.10.2023)

Chartplatzierungen und Pitchfork-Reviews gibt es für die Chemical Brothers aktuell (fast) nicht, aber ihr neues Album lässt sich gut durchhören. Das heißt, dass der Dance-Beat gut durchläuft. Cringe Momente oder Psychedelica sind rarer und bremsen den Fluss daher nicht. Am ehesten ist das Album mit "Dig Your Own Hole" (1997) vergleichbar.

Etwas mehr als 6 Monate ist mein letzter Blog-Eintrag (eigentlich: Beitrag zu meinem letzten Mix) her. Das ist schade, weil es trotz der aktuellen Situation auch Positives zu berichten gibt. Vor allem über gute, neue Musik hätte ich gerne geschrieben, die ich mir im Albumformat bevorzugt auf CDs besorge.

Aber wie war es die letzten Monate? Zwischen den Leuten, die während der Corona-Zeit viel Sport betrieben und/oder viel getrunken haben, war ich in der dritten Gruppe: Leute, die in der Arbeit mehr zu tun bekommen haben. Die vierte Gruppe sind wohlmöglich die Corono-Verschwörungstheoretiker.

Aprospos über gute Musik auf Tonträgern (und anderes) schreiben: Vor ein paar Jahren war ich mir relativ sicher, dass es immer "jemanden" geben wird, der/die mir seine/ihre Musik auf CDs verkaufen wird. Ich war mir auch relativ sicher, dass ich über Musik weiterhin in gedruckter Form lesen werde können. Nachdem es Spex nicht mal mehr digital gibt, und die CD-Regale immer karger werden, bin ich mir nicht mehr ganz so sicher über meine Annahmen.

Ab jetzt öfter ... sicher.
