(Horsing Around - Centaurs, Ponies and Unicorns)

A Change of Heart by JackGiggles My Little Pony AU (Gen, Moceit) Rating: G Pat is a pegasus who has always been terrified of changelings. One day the worst happens and he winds up getting abducted...only to be offered a chance at rescue by the object of his fear. Notes: I have not seen a single episode of MLP, but I really, really enjoyed this story.

The of mythics and man series by awormofmyword Fantasy AU (Moceit, Royality) Rating: T/E An encounter between a hungry dragon and a lonely unicorn results in a bond neither of them were expecting. Notes: Tales of longing, love and lust in between a dragon, a unicorn, and (eventually) the hapless human prince who finds his way into their relationship.

The Price of Love by SocialBookWorm Supernatural AU (Roceit) Rating: M Roman is an extremely lonely unicorn, kept isolated in hopes of keeping him safe from a world that would seek to hunt him down and use him for his magic. One night, he drunkenly summons a demon into his life. Notes: A sad story with a soft, sweet ending. (MCD warning is for Virgil, who is present as a ghost in this story, but his death in the past and Roman's grief over it is still a major plot point.)

hardly ever what we dream by Odaigahara Fantasy AU (Logince) Rating: T Roman has been bringing "trophies" to the unicorn that his father is holding captive, hoping against hope that his gifts might earn his regard. (Meanwhile, Logan is not unaware of the dangerous game the prince is playing in order to lend him aid.) Notes: A fantasy AU inspired by The Last Unicorn (except Logan is far too stubborn and determined to let the love that has found him end as a bittersweet tragedy).

The Beginning by princeanxcious Modern AU (Gen) Rating: NR Virgil is a centaur colt on the run after the capture of his herd who has the tremendous good luck to stumble right into the hands most willing and able to offer him safety. Notes: Hurt/comfort focused on a sad, scared little kid Virgil, who finds his way to a centaur sanctuary.

The Centaurs and Other Tales series by OVER_feeling Fantasy AU (Roceit, Intruality) Rating: T Roman discovers an enigmatic and secretive creature living in his herd's territory. Later, Remus encounters some unusual travelers, including a soft-hearted faun. Notes: Tales of two centaur twins meeting their respective magical boyfriends. The first is a very nice story with naga!Janus and hypothermic hurt/comfort. The second is a WIP that dangles a mystery regarding Janus's past and what may be a curse afflicting Patton (and also Remus's raging crush, but there's nothing mysterious about that).

Centaur Sides by Annadekiller Modern/Slavery AU (Gen) Rating: NR A dystopian Modern AU where centaurs exist and despite being clearly sapient are treated as beasts of burden. After meeting Logan, Thomas does what he can to save the abused centaur from torment. And then it happens again. And again… Notes: So much Hurt and so much Comfort. Treads some very serious ground in terms of dehumanization, slavery, trauma, mental health struggles, addiction, self-harm, grief, crime involvement, and many other things, and yet somehow never manages to feel bleak. Despite the horrors they've faced in the past and whatever lies ahead of them, they have each other. (Formerly "Sanders sides but as centaurs". Yes, this rec is a repost. But it's a long running story, and it has updated several chapters since first rec, it's also recently changed its name. So. Yeah.)

Being an outcast within the mindscape was a full time job. Whatever role they had been created for, it made doing it so much harder. They had spent most of their lives fighting to make themselves heard—to be the force in Thomas's life that he needed them to be, whether he wanted them or not. It was hard. It was tiring. Janus had hated it, but in trying times it was important to find ways to keep oneself going... And sometimes self care was just you and a friend breaking into your enemy's room to play Dance Dance Revolution.

The Gold of Your Heart by SocialBookWorm

Roceit, 204093 words

One of the first long fics I ever read, and it was instantly a favourite. Written before the Janus name reveal, so they use a different name, but honestly I love it just as much!!!! Super cool exploration of the Imagination as a space (and definitely has left lasting impacts on how i picture it & the dragon witch & everything related), plus 'magic' type systems surrounding the sides and their own special abilities. Fantastic plot development, pacing, character exploration, and explanation - every character who does something morally reprehensible or 'hateable' has a reason for it, even the major antagonist. Cannot recommend more.

Lonely Love by analogueAssassin

Roceit (& background other ships), 78360 words

Urban fantasy human AU. What more do I have to say? Incredible work with fantasy elements and time travel, and the fact that the author manager to keep that many little details balanced is unbelievable. A little lighter on the character exploration, but that's only to keep the focus on a fascinating twisty-turny plot that you can't put down. Seriously, if time travel is at all your thing - you need this. Now.

Kill the Lights by patentpending

Logince (& background other ships), 78425 words

1940s detective noir. Logan - a private eye. Roman - a star who lives and and breathes for the stage, seeking out his help. They can't decide whether to hate each other, flirt, or hate flirt until one of them breaks. The chemistry between them is definitely a big draw, but the biggest is the quality of this fic in terms of attending to its genre. Pacing is done incredibly well (can't name the number of times my question was answered as I was asking it) and the author doesn't shy away from addressing queerness and race in the 40s. No rock is left unturned, no mystery is left unanswered, and no friend is spared from my screaming in their DMs about how one of them just said this THING and it was SO cool or flirty or intense.

Fander Fic Rec Friday (#42)

(Coming Up Roses - Hanahaki Stories)

Love is Love and Love Hurts (Yes, that includes platonic love) by Hamiltalian Human AU (Gen) Rating: M When an argument, Janus does his best to accept the fact that Virgil never wants to speak to him again. His resignation doesn't waver once he starts growing flowers in his lungs. Notes: I love the idea of platonic hanahaki. Also, Remus is such a good friend in this one.

I Can't Breathe When I Think of You by certified_simping Canonverse (Moceit) Rating: T When Deceit starts coughing up flowers he's convinced it's a lost cause. Rather than trying to confess he instead tries to make amends with before the end. Notes: This is a Moceit story, but it almost takes a back seat to the dark boys feels once Virgil and Remus learn about Deceit's predicament and I love that about it.

Songs to Grow Flowers To by TheAsexualofSpades Human AU (Gen) Rating: G Virgil has been living with chronic hanahaki for years due to his parents' emotional neglect. Notes: Familial hanahaki is not something you see very often in stories. Virgil's got love and support in his life, just not from the source he's needed it from the most.

Janus Was Not Dying by MeadowofBluebells Canonverse (Loceit) Rating: G Part of Janus's job in the mindscape is safeguarding the secrets that the other sides keep, even from themselves. When Janus starts coughing up petals he forces himself to endure, because he knows confessing his own feelings would force Logan to confront his lie about not feeling any of his own. Notes: This one is so unique in the reason that Janus is keeping his condition a secret.

Everything is Fine by orphan_account Canonverse (Anxceit) Rating: T Things in the mindscape are mostly on the mend, and now Virgil and Remus are repairing their friendship. And yet, Virgil still can't seem to stand to be in the same room with him. It feels like a lost cause, and the sense of finality only grows when he starts coughing up flowers. Notes: This one adds a some symbolism of specific flowers into the mix.

Intertwined by WizardGlick Canonverse (Moceit) Rating: T After the wedding, while the others are all off licking their wounds alone, Janus and Patton are there to support each other. While trying to navigate the overall soreness around the mindscape, gentle bonding ensues that leaves both of them a little breathless. Notes: Some reciprocal pining for these two goobers.

Forget Me Not (don't let go) by LadyoftheWoods Canonverse (Loceit) Rating: T Janus gets hanahaki, not only is he sure it's hopeless, but he can't even imagine that anyone will care once he's gone, Logan least of all. Notes: This one goes the extra mile with the actual recovery. Everything isn't just magically fixed once feelings are confessed, both in terms of the physical and the emotional damage.

Black Dahlia's in My Lungs by TypicallyUntypical Human AU (Remile) Rating: T Emile never got over his high school crush, and has lived with chronic hanahaki ever since. He's dealing with it just fine until Remy comes back to town. Notes: A fic from the Sleepy Bean Cafe event. This one is honestly very sweet as fics of this type go.

The Dangers(?) of Acceptance by Rainstorm67 Canonverse (Gen, one-sided Roceit) Rating: T As if the mindscape was not content to have Janus coughing up roses out of love for a side who hates him, after his attempts at acceptance he wakes to find that his mouth has been sewn shut. Notes: The hurt in this one cuts really deep before any kind of comfort arrives, and the combination of whump tropes here is particularly brutal, and the descriptions somewhat graphic, so take care. (Additional warning for Roman fans: while he's not exactly malicious in this story, he's definitely a bit of an asshole.)

a red spot (oh forget me not) by starlocked Human AU (Intrulogical) Rating: T When Logan's doctor tells him he has a cactus growing in his lungs, he's mostly confused, because if unrequited feelings are what placed them there he doesn't know who they're for. Remus, meanwhile, treasures the flowers growing in his lungs to accompany his feelings for a certain nerd. Notes: They're disasters. It's lovely.

Petals Of Blue by screamingatstars Canonvese (Moxiety) Rating: T When Virgil starts coughing up petals he refuses to tell Patton about his feelings. Patton has a lot of love to give, but Virgil can't imagine him feeling the same way. Worse, the last thing he wanted was for Patton to force himself into a relationship just to save his life. Notes: (Janus's part in this is so small, but it's lowkey hilarous for how efficiently it cuts through the self-sacrificing nonsense.)

(100 word drabble for the prompt: "having a crush on someone you shouldn’t")

Janus didn't have a crush. That would have been ridiculous. And if he had—which he didn't, of course—he couldn't imagine himself ever thinking of it as a crush. Surely that would only cheapen it. Some loves went beyond words, beyond simple feeling. Indeed, Janus doubted there were words in any language that could begin to describe what he was feeling- Wasn't feeling. Though it couldn't be said that Janus felt...nothing. On the contrary, he felt so much... Because it was Thomas. And Thomas deserved everything. And Janus would always fight to give him everything. No matter what.

The server that does these prompts has a special event lined up for the start of next month, so I'm pulling out next month's drabble a little early using this week's regular prompt instead.

Panel 5: Remus is laying in a casual pose on the floor of a stone walled and floored dungeon, his wrists and ankles are bloody stumps of torn flesh. He is laid on his back, propping himself upright by his left elbow, pointing his right stump at the shackle around his neck that is chained to the wall behind him. His right leg is bend with the stump pressed against the floor, and his left leg is casually crossed over it.

Remus has a lazy smile on his face and blood smeared on his face and splattered all down the front of his top and the shackle around his neck. There are three visible, bloodied shackles covered in blood behind Remus on the far right of the panel. Also on the right side is the chewed-off right-hand and left foot of Remus, resting on pools of blood. On the left of the panel is the severed right foot, laying in a pool of blood.

Remus: The neck! HAH!

Remus: Anyways, is that a hacksaw in your hand or are you just happy to see me?

(Fanged Fables - Vampire AUs)

Tangled In Your Heartstrings by centeroftheselights Supernatural AU (Romoxiety) Rating: T When Patton stumbles across a starving vampire on the street, of course he's going to help. With blood and a little magic to help it along it should be an easy fix. Unfortunately for the witch his emergency measures, while effective, come with a lot more strings attached than he or Virgil had bargained for. (And Patton's boyfriend, Roman, isn't thrilled about it either.) Notes: A sweet and emotional story navigating a complicated web of love, blood and magic.

Soulblood by KorruptBrekker Vampire/Soulmate AU (Analogical) Rating: T A vampire's soulblood is a mortal whose blood will keep them sated for the rest of their long lives. For Virgil, finding Logan was a dream come true, but for Logan it means the loss of the independence he had fought so hard to achieve. But it's the law that a vampire and their soulblood live together, so now that Virgil has found him neither has a choice but to try and learn to live together. Notes: Emotionally complicated queerplatonic Analogical set in a slightly dystopian supernatural setting, with a focus on the work involved in building trust.

Fanged Friend by Demon_Wr1ter Vampire AU (Gen/LAMP) Rating: T Virgil's roommates all knew that he was a vampire, and for the most part they were all fine with helping to keep him fed. Unfortunately, nothing is allowed to stay simple, and their comfortable life is shaken up when Virgil suddenly finds his self-control starting to fray. Notes: In which Virgil is something like vampire royalty, and his friends get dragged into his brother's plans for his future.

By the Day's First Light by callboxkat Vampire AU (Gen) Rating: T When Logan arrives at his door at three in the morning in clear distress, of course Virgil is going to do everything in his power to help. (Unfortunately, there's only so much that he can do about this.) Notes: In which Virgil fields an unexpected crisis late at night, and he and Logan are both dealing with a lot all at once.

Fangs by TessaTheDreamer Vampire AU (Logince) Rating: T After being attacked by a vampire, Logan does his best to hide the consequences from his roommates. (It goes about as well as you'd expect.) Notes: Logince and LAMP friendship.

won't you let me in by peachsneakers Vampire AU (Analogical) Rating: T Virgil has a visitor, one that's begging him desperately to be let in. Which would be uncomfortable enough even if they weren't waiting at his window. On the fourth floor. Notes: A short Analogical meet-cute with fangs.

Virgil the Wee Vampire by PaigePenn Vampire/G/t AU (Gen) Rating: T After his colony is destroyed by a vampire hunter, Virgil takes the risk of feeding from a group of humans camping out in the forest. Unfortunately he gets caught in the act (which might not have been that much of a problem, except for the fact that Virgil is, at best only six inches, tall). Notes: In which vampires not only turn into bats but are also are bat sized. It's super cute.

Remus is in his "Skirt Look" of a green tutu, fishnets and black combat boots. He is only visible from the waist down and is down on his left knee.
