My name is Alex Gearin and I am a documentary filmmaker. I have embarked on a mission to capture the rare form of adrenaline that occurs in situations of robbery. My interest sparked in this subject when I was studying abroad in Spain for Fall semester of my junior year. As a minority in Madrid, being both white and female, I was a target for pick pocketing. I experienced a couple of close calls of people trying to steal my wallet or purse on the subway or in the grocery store. I never understood why those people tried to take my stuff. To further my understanding of a robbers mindset I have documented unique videos that have been captured on surveillance video cameras to analyze their behavior. When choosing videos my process was to analyze the robbers tactics, strategy, and expressions. By doing this I can better understand the disparity and aggression these people have. These videos either show a unique situation, or they reveal overlapping circumstances that commonly transpire during a robbery. My documentary is in the observational mode because the surveillance videos capture the robberies happening from an outside perspective. The camera observes aspects of the world as they happen, and the ‘social actors’ behave as if no camera is watching. There are many ethical issues revolving around this topic. The most obvious one is asking the questions of what drives these individuals to act in such a way that not only put others in danger, but they also feel like they are entitled to taking other peoples things. Another ethical issue is if these individuals consented to being filmed. It is not unethical to tape people without consent on surveillance cameras because surveillance cameras help protect the owner or employees of the establishment.
