Hey Doc, your Harbringer AU got me to come up with this fun little AU.

It's called The Time-Displacement AU!

Here, The Avengers suffer from an ambush from Kang and his forces.

And he sends each of them to a different point in history.

Bruce landed in Feudal Japan, where he's constantly on the run because of Hulk, who's been mistaken for an Oni.

Clint landed in Medieval England, where he's joined the forces of The legendary Robin Hood and his Merry Men.

Janet landed in The Mayan Civilization, where she's being worshipped as an avatar of Ah Muzen Cab, the god of bees and honey.

Vision landed in the future, where he's working with Spider-Man 2099 to find the other Avengers.

Steve landed in The Plains War, where's fighting on the side of The Native Americans.

Natasha landed in The Renaissance, aiding Venice in their frequent espionage.

Tony landed in The Stone Age, where his suit eventually gives out on him and has to defend himself without it.

Thor landed in The Viking Age, where he's constantly being worshipped by the vikings while dealing with the antics of a young Loki and Enchantress.

T'Challa landed in The Atlantic Slave Trade, where's he fighting against the forces of The Europeans and freeing the captured Africans.

Carol landed back in Ancient Greece, where she's become a mighty warrior evading the forces of Athens and Sparta.

And Scott landed back in The Golden Age of Piracy, where he's joined a pirate crew.

God I love time-displacement AUs and these are so good. I’ve had thoughts for a time-displacement AU but… history was never my strongest subject- (I loved science and psychology)

Bruce would have definitely learned to read and write way too early. His dad didn’t like that…

Also Steve’s place in this AU is interesting. Essentially they find him encased in crystal.

Nevermind I have more insane medievalist ramblings, ignore, steal or secret third option the contents of this ask by your own prerogative

So in canon 90% of Clint’s backstory is about escaping abuse and poverty by whatever means necessary (crime and archery), so his backstory in the au would be 90% about escaping abuse and poverty by whatever means necessary (crime and archery), though since it’s a medieval esque au instead of poverty it’d be serfdom!

So after Clint and his brother Barney’s parents died in some peasanty way, the two of them would have had to grow or steal enough food to not starve after most of it was taken in taxes by the local lord while not being able to leave because as serfs they’d be legally tied to whoever owned the land they lived on (which, yknow, sucked bad! Clint no likey!)

Meanwhile some nice, definitely trustworthy folks in the woods (Jacques/Swordsman and Buck/Trickshot) who were talking a big deal about overthrowing land owners and freeing the serfs offered to teach him how to shoot a bow and arrow so he could join them in starting an uprising, which at the time sounded like a better idea than being a serf forever. This would be the au equivalent of Carson’s Circus—a particularly corrupt surf uprising!

After something happened to make Barney leave the picture (probably getting conscripted in some war, who knows who cares) Clint decided to ditch the field work and join the uprising full time in a righteous crusade for sociopolitical change! But uh oh—he found out first hand that the uprising was also stealing food from serfs. So he did what he does best—and left! This time to strike out on his own, with a Robin Hood-esque schtick where he steals from the rich to give to the poor.

Eventually some ragtag team of heretics called the Avengers got tasked with catching a thieving bowman, and after a series of not-very-legal shenanigans Clint ended up joining them.

But that’s just a theory! A gay-

I actually like this a lot! My original idea was a bounty hunter who couldn’t kill his target due to realizing how unjust the bounty was… you can take a guess who the bounty was… just a small guess. But I’m like the Robin Hood type. It’s very fitting of him. Maybe they can merge together…

Yknow those fics where after a completely average battle Clint is stuck in medbay with 29 broken bones because he did something stupid and got yeeted?

Bruce: I’m going to beat the shit out of you

Tony: You probably would be able to. I’d say it’s a fair fight

Clint, in a hospital bed and incredibly high on pain killers: Nah I’d win

This is the result of me searching for the most complicated medievalist nerd shit way of incorporating Vision into the harbinger au because why have anything be simple when you could have Fantasy Judaism

But to get to Vision we have to start with Ultron, who Hank Pym would have made to solve a succession crisis in a small kingdom by creating the Ultimate Body Politic (a concept from the book Leviathan that conceptualizes a kingdom as a gigantic humanoid body with the subjects making up the body and the king as the head puppeting it all). I think that would look like a humanoid mechanicus being operated by thousands of eusocial insects all being controlled by one king-like consciousness, which idealizes social cohesion, unity and control above all else (because that’s what Hank sees to be so effective about ants). There is also something to be said about how this Ultron is a false king because it was appointed by a man (Hank) and not (post-Constantine Christian) God and therefore Ultron does not have the divine right to rule, or that this Ultron sees itself as a king above God. Can’t have any thematic conversation on medieval society without digging into how much medieval ideas of politics and Christianity were interconnected after all.

And then as this heretical, metallic incarnation of Christian Feudalism takes control of both Christian and political institutions the quickest, the holdouts would be outcasts of that society: the Pagans (like Thor and also probably Moonknight somewhere), newly established Romani populations (like Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver, we stan) and of course The Jews. Haven’t figured out how exactly Vision would be made, but it would be funny if he just Materialized in front of the town Synagogue like hi 🧍‍♂️ and then joined in the fight.

On the one hand using golems in media has been often criticized as antisemitic due to that being a medieval stereotype associated with Jews, but in this context having Vision be a Jewish golem is being used to describe and critique the historical conflicts between feudalist Christian society and Jewish communities in medieval Europe which itself was the origin of the concepts of golems. Also in my personal opinion having humanoid constructs designed to protect the public inside a medieval European inspired setting and not golems just a little bit is a missed opportunity, because golems are one of the earliest examples of that concept in storytelling.

Honestly, this AU is more orientated forwards fae fantasy (Janet would be part fae). I do need to work on profiles. I do have one for Bruce pre-harbinger. Vision being a miraculous combination of science and magic could work really well. I should incorporate more characters into the AU. Every sin needs their virtue….
