OKAY BUT ALSO CONSIDER (please forgive my word dump that is about to follow. this isn’t meant to be taken too seriously lol):

maybe they aren’t hiding it.

sasuke and naruto together just is. right? they are an inevitability of the universe, right? they just exist together in each other’s orbits. but they don’t do too much differently. after the divorces, they live together and yeah, the konoha 11 think it’s a little strange. but this is sasuke and naruto so nothing shocks them anymore. they are just close, whatever.

but it’s not a secret. not to sasuke and naruto. or at least, they didn’t think it was.

but then sarada and boruto grow up. and start dating.

and one day naruto and sasuke are out with the konoha 11, which they never get to do as much anymore.

and sakura says, “so sasuke, how do you feel about sarada dating idiot’s son over there?”

naruto squawks, “hey!”

sasuke just shrugs, “could be worse. she could have ended up with mitsuki.”

naruto just smirks at sticks his tongue out at sakura. he turns to sasuke and says, “wait, sasuke. how are we going to be both in-laws and dating?”

the table goes eerily quiet.

kiba is the first to break the silence, “naruto... what does that mean?”

“what do you mean, “what does that mean?” i know you are a life long bachelor, but even you know what “in-laws” means.”

shikamaru speaks as if he is about to spook sasuke and naruto with the slightest movement, “i think what he is asking is you how you would be both in-laws and dating. as in, you and sasuke are dating? do sarada and boruto know this?”

sasuke looks uninterested in the entire conversation. like none of what is happening could bother him.

“of course they know! right, sasuke?”

“i don’t think they do. i don’t think anyone did, usuratonkachi. we didn’t exactly advertise it.”

naruto pales. “sasuke,” he whispers. “what does this mean. what does this mean? is this incest? do we have to break up?”

sasuke glares at naruto, “no, you idiot. they aren’t actually related and we aren’t married.”

naruto breathes a sigh of relief. then he realizes something. “wait. we aren’t married. sasuke! do you want to get married?”

“and make life more complicated for our kids? i’m happy with what we have now.” to anyone else, it would sound like a rejection. but to naruto, he hears it for what it is and just smiles at sasuke. he knows sasuke wouldn’t change anything about what they have because they are both happy. and that means everything to them after everything they have been though.

sakura bursts into laughter, “you two are the most ridiculous people i have ever met. can’t you do anything normally?”

sasuke glances at naruto before saying, “no. no we can’t.”

screaming the idea of sasuke and naruto being in-laws because sarada and boruto are getting normal heterosexual married and sasuke and naruto sitting there thinking about the ramifications of being in-laws and how this is going to put a strain on their secret affair
