In 1969, history was made because of our first Filipino beauty queen to ever win the Miss Universe crown, Gloria Diaz. I won.
"Beauty is pain" is a famous line I got from the internet years ago. It's my favorite motto. Why? Because I believe that beauty really comes with pain. As recent freelance make-up artist, I've always been very insecure with how I look, how I see things and how good am I doing. Being insecure is just one of the reasons why I always want to challenge myself. Forming my image in the public, doing things I dont necessarily do just to stretch my capabilities and lessen the doubts I have about myself.
When I was eleven years old I used to play with miniature cars with dolls riding it. I dont know why,all I know is that I find it fascinating and satisfying to see those dolls riding cool miniature cars while their shiny golden hair was flowing. Back then I've always known in different and there is nothing wrong with a boy expressing himself through playing with his toys which people think I shouldn't play with. But I never stopped from being myself. In grade school I got involved in art classes. Visual arts, theater arts and many more. I received so much hate by people who couldn't accept me, or should I say by people who just couldn't stand that I'm doing better.
December 11, 2018 a friend of mine told me an something about a competition from a local famous brand called Ever Bilena. It is a make-up contest in which the grand winner will receive 50,000 pesos cash, 20,000 pesos worth of Ever Bilena products and a trip to Thailand for two with all expenses paid. When I got home that day I couldn't help but wonder how is it like to win. Just like I said a while ago, I like challenging myself. A week later, I made my decision and it is to fight for what I want and to win that fight.
I started making make-up transformation videos. I basically sacrificed my entire Christmas vacation to get into the Grand Finals portion. I lost four times consecutively. But I told myself "I got this!". Serious face on, my brushes are ready to touch my face. And guess what? The night announcement, I saw my face and name posted on the official page saying "congratulations!". But my adventure didn't just stop there. I had to get ready for the final fight, so I did!
I prepared for months and rehearsed every strategy I'm about to use because deep in my bones I know there's a lot of people who supports me and I don't want to disappoint them. I did everything I could. I even paid Facebook to sponsor or boost my final entry! The day of the announcement I really thought I was going to win, but I didn't. Then I realized how far I got from just being a stalker of famous artists in social media to being one of the finalists of a famous brand competition. I am very grateful and proud. Because now I know that winning isn't everything, why? Because success can only be determined by ourselves.
