Thank you for the mention! <3
Do you know any angsty johnlock fics?
You are in the right fandom. Angst is what we’ve got. (These will all have happy endings, though. It’s my must-have.) I’ll post some now and some more soon!
Who I Really Am (13k, T, friends to lovers; internalized homophobia, alcoholism, childhood trauma, grief, miscommunication). It takes every bit of courage he has for John to let himself say yes–yes, it’s possible; yes, that’s who I could be; yes–I could be in love.
I’m the Rainbow in Your Jail Cell(2k, G, first kiss; internalized homophobia) by @agirlsname. John finally comes around to the realization that he could live his whole life without ever telling the truth if he doesn’t take his chance.
The Bridge (2k, M, first kiss; flashbacks, sexual trauma, healing) by @sussexbound. John helps Sherlock through an unexpectedly overwhelming memory.
Inevitable Conclusions(12k, T, friends to lovers; post-Reichenbach return, grief, re-learning trust) by @captain-liddy. Sherlock and John struggle slowly but bravely toward a better understanding of each other.
Two by Two(37k, T, friends to lovers; near-death experience, phobia, miscommunication, murder on the high seas) by @doomsteady. John is deadly afraid of water, which wouldn’t be a big deal if they weren’t fighting for the lives in the middle of the ocean.
Bel Canto(127k, T, friends to lovers; Phantom of the Opera AU; miscommunication, divided loyalties, jealousy). A mysterious composer, a charming nobleman, an opera house ghost, and a series of murders.
the curious case of the mysteriously missing birthday(7k, G, friends to lovers; miscommunication, grief, canon fixit) by @watsonshoneybee. Through all the grief and confusion John has held to this one day–this single day he lets himself wholly remember Sherlock, and what they’d had.
Where You Hang Your Heart(13k, M, friends to lovers; estrangement) by @suitesamba. Sherlock waits for John, and searches for his own peace while he waits, until patience heals them both.
Offering(10k, T, first kiss; grief, miscommunication) by @hubblegleeflower. John’s reached the end of his rope, and so he’s come to tell Sherlock that he loves him, even though he knows Sherlock doesn’t want to hear it.
Negative Capability (6k, T, pre-slash; trauma recovery, therapy, post-s4). Sherlock tries to understand what is the value of a memory, of his sense of self, of love.
carrying up his morning tea(34k, E, friends to lovers; death, grief, miscommunication, jealousy, insecurity). Sherlock grieves a loss, and John tries to reach him again, after a long time away, and too much silence.
The Way to a Man’s Heart(21k, T, friends to lovers; jealousy, miscommunication, loss of a first love, repression). The reappearance of Victor Trevor is an unwanted, unexpected, absurd complication, now that life is good–now that John’s come home.
A Winter Walk(3k, T, pre-slash; grief, missed chances and second chances). Sherlock meets John fifty years after he’d last seen him, and learns to hope again.
Night Shift(4k, G, first kiss; disassociation, grief, recovery) by @sussexbound. John Watson, battered and bruised, finally learns to let himself be loved.

I’ve just realised how similar this exchange is to the famous “interview” scene in “The Imprtance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde, in which Lady Bracknell tells Jack Worthing (the love interest of Gwendolen Fairfax) to sit down, to which he replies “I prefer standing”. This is interesting as Mycroft is said to have played Lady Bracknell at school, going by the final problem, directly addressing this similarity… and considering how Lady Bracknell is interviewing Jack for marriage to her daughter here… 👀👀👀👀👀 we may be expecting a happy announcement by the end of the series…

Thoughts from a private conversation:
I’ve heard a lot of female creatives express the feeling that their work is diminished by their emotional investment in it. That it’s self-indulgent, or too niche, or too obvious self-projection. That it needs forgiveness for the obvious vulnerabilities and griefs and happinesses they’ve put into what they make.
But no great creative work is done without vulnerability and emotion. Think about the work (activism, writing, research, art) of the people who’ve influenced you most. I guarantee they worked from the things that mattered to them personally.
Literature is my ground. George MacDonald wrote the hopeful universalist theology he was called a heretic for into fairy tales. Tolkien wrote his experience with war and evil into mythology. C.S. Lewis wrote his philosophical worries and his childhood griefs into magic and legend. Doyle wrote his friendships and lost loves into mysteries. Not every work they created was universal in its impact, but the most universally loved was still deeply personal.
Learn to say what you have to say, and worry less about originality and more about authenticity. Let what you create be as honest as possible. I’m always surprised by what strikes others in what I’ve written or taught. I never know what I have to give until it’s given.
Good creative work transcends your individuality because it is true, not because it is impersonal.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT
@tendergingergirl nominated me to try to find a way to keep track of the new meta that has been written since s4 of bbc sherlock aired in January, 2017. This is my first experiment. The folder and contents will be viewable by anyone with the link. My thought is to create a document for each writer, which will consist of their meta master list, ie a title and/or description, with a link back to the meta on their tumblr (or ao3 or wherever else their meta is made available to readers). If you tag me when you reblog your list, I’ll try to make sure it’s included, or updated.
I don’t have the time or skills to run a library of the actual texts, or a wiki that’s group edited. I also don’t have the intestinal fortitude to deal with mischief, if that happens I’ll have to shut it down or find some other method.
I’m a “both-and” meta reader, I enjoy the many different perspectives that various fans bring to the show. You may find writers in this folder whose views are different from yours, and I hope if that’s the case, you will exercise your good manners and use the back button rather than leaving rude comments.
I’d like to include LOTS more meta writers, one of the really exciting things for me about this hiatus, is how many new people are writing analysis! So if you have written even just a few pieces, please make a “master list” and reblog it and tag me! I’d like to include you!

“Perhaps the drugs opened certain doors in my mind. I’m intrigued.”
It’s officially been over a year since this episode (expect a John companion piece in the near future…)
