CHINESE NEW YEAR 2016
Also commonly known as the Lunar New Year, it is a time where all the Chinese usher in a new year according to the Lunar Calendar. This Chinese New Year lasts for a total of 15 days.
On the eve of Chinese New Year, we will all gather with our relatives for a reunion dinner. We sit down on the table over a wide spread of food, mainly steamboat (or hotpot as the Americans/English refer to)!
The next few days as we usher in a new year, we go around visiting our relatives (in order of the eldest, so, the man of the house reigns, we go to the man’s side first etc.). As we visit our relatives, the younger ones will bring a pair of mandarin oranges with us to wish our elders good luck in Chinese. After which, we all will receive Red Packets!
Red packets are given to the younger/unmarried ones from the married ones. It contains monetary value in every red packet! That is the best part of the new year! Pay year!
As the celebrations goes, everyone will be decked in new clothes, new shoes, and mostly in red as red symbolises luck. Also, we will be seen playing with poker cards, gambling and not forgetting the game of Mahjong. Food and new year goodies will be found every where and of course, what is a celebration without drinks?
There you go, something for you to take home today. I hope you enjoyed this series and I hope to be able to bring more to you in the future! Share this if you liked it!
