the sad fate of louhi's youngest daughter

in the Kalevala, Louhi the witch is the queen of the underworld, or the far north. she has many beautiful daughters, and at one point Ilmarinen the smith god & Väinämöinen travel to demand Ilmarinen be allowed to marry one of the daughters to replace his deceased wife. Louhi offers her youngest; the daughter, however, spurns Ilmarinen, and in his rage he turns her into a bird - usually characterized as a seagull.

this painting is a response to that story, offering a reality where despite her transformation and subsequent demise, Louhi's youngest daughter is cared for, cradled, treasured. despite what change may unwillingly come, an image of acceptance and peace.

hello tumblrs. I have been MIA for the past 5 weeks because I've been in Finland at artist residency (and also just, doing Finland stuff). pictured above is a preview of the final exhibition the residents put on featuring my 3 larger pieces and some smaller paintings of Kristiiankaupunki. I will post scans of the images when I return to the US after July 11th. until then enjoy trying to decipher these.

this has been a very expensive trip, especially since I unfortunately lost a bag containing about $2k of stuff (supplies, etc) near the beginning and have not been able to locate it. if anyone feels moved to donate, you can always do so via ko-fi or paypal.

Hi everyone! This is going to be a busy summer for me: I am going to Finland in June for a month-long artist residency, and in August I will be having the infamous ~*top surgery.*~ My insurance is covering said surgery, but there will be a co-pay, and between that and the costs of travel, I am looking at quite a bit of upcoming expense.

I've decided to knock down some commission prices for the end of March and the month of April to hopefully help fundraise. Here is what I am offering:

$50 ink portraits

$70 ink thigh-ups

$100 painted portraits

$100 pet/animal portraits

$150 pet/animal fullbody paintings

Tumblr unfortunately won't let me add multiple images to this post without crashing the post editor, but I've added some examples within the google form for these commissions. If you want to see more examples you can always look through the my art tag on my blog or feel free to contact me. Please share this post with anyone you think may be interested! I am probably looking at about $5000-6000 in expenses this summer, and every bit helps!

@johannestevans has been posting a lot about House which reminded me of these extremely old art pieces I made circa 2007 in my freshman year of college - the assignment was to make a set of stamps. I did not know how to use Photoshop. I think they are still fun to look at.

In case you were wondering, Chase was absolutely my favorite and I still resent how dirty the writers done his character in later seasons, tyvm.
