On Prompto’s Bar Codes

Disclaimer: I am a scientist. (Neurochem)I know this doesn’t work in real life applications, but I thought it was interesting to see anyways.

So I threw this numbers into GenBank – NIH genetic sequence database just for fun because I was drunk one day. They are associated with some pretty interesting DNA sequences.

The bottom number there is part of a retrovirus.  An ENV protein specifically.  It would trigger a conformational change, allowing for binding of the fusion protein. So what does that mean fro Prompto? Well,  retroviral vectors are the most widely used delivery vehicles to integration genes into chromosomes of affected cells. So he’s a “knock in” animal for sequences that would allow him to change. For fantasy purposes, we could say he’s He’s been genetically programed to mutate.

This 01987 – that’s a fun one. It’s swine IL-alpha. I work with ILs on a daily basis and they are used as markers for “something gone wrong.” For instance, if I take a tissue from a stressed animal vs a nonstressed animal, the stressed animal will have produced more IL-alpha. It is the marker various immune responses and and hematopoiesis (The production of all types of blood cells). This cytokine is released in  response to cell injury, and thus induces apoptosis. (cell death) That is to say, he’s durable. He can regenerate blood cells, including his immune system white blood cells, to ward of disease and infection. Then he has the ability to kill off and clear out the “bad cells” faster too. It’s even been implicated in protection from gamma radiation (meteor anyone?) But this is not without consequence. Its a marker for inflammation, neuro-degenerative diseases, and diabetes. So, he’s sturdy, but he’s also set up for a lot of problems later. Implication? He’s not made to live long. He’s made of pig and virus parts because he’s disposable.

And the best bit? NH. He’s non human. He’s a non human primate. Therefore he wouldn’t be afforded personhood.

Edit: Feel like I should say too that he’s properly coded. As in you put non-human primate codes on their outer wrist so it’s scannable when they grip the bars. He should have had a chip implanted at that age which should be in his right bicep. Maybe it rejected and he covered it with that bandana?

Crest of Lucis

Interesting points:

The Capital Insomnia is shaped like the crest.

Small detail in weapon user interface.

Skull sigil. Crest’s circle present. Available as car decal. Perhaps an old remnant to Versus 13′s death worshipping lore.

Do you have any images of the crest of lucis?

Yes, a few. I found it interesting to see how the capital Insomnia is shaped after the Lucis crest as well.

The circle in Lucis’ crest or symbol is present in the sigil below. It’s available as a car decal in game. Perhaps it’s a remnant of Versus 13′s god of death worshipping concept.

I remember having seen a top view of one of the Royal Tombs and it had the circle of the crest engraved on top of it. Maybe the tomb’s outline is supposed to represent the four diamond shapes.

I do not have a picture of it since I can only recall it from memory. I know I saw it on a video of someone flying around using the Armiger glitch.

Crest of Tenebrae (or the Nox Fleuret family)

So weve seen the flag of Lucius and the flag of Nifilheim which are not avaliable in any form of a flat picture and somewhere in Altissia there is a Accordo flag , what do you think the flag of Tenebrae would look like ? since there does not seem to be one in existance.

Not as many sketches and preliminary ideas as I was hoping for, but it’s much better than nothing!

Official Noctis and Luna age concept chart. 12-year-old Noctis and 16-year-old Luna appear in Brotherhood anime.

Every notebook cutscene shows how relieved and happy Noctis and Luna are to know each other are safe and well. I don’t think we appreciate their body language enough.

Lunafreya’s “child abuse” fic.

Some time ago I had a short story play in my mind about Luna’s supposed childhood abuse situation.

But what if the “abuse” we saw in the Dawn trailer was just our view of it. Niflheim wants to keep the next Oracle under control, not break her.

This is a summarized little fic

The Week after the Incident

After Fenestala Manor got burned down and the Oracle perished, the Nox Fleuret family was kept under heavy watch. (Reminder from the Ultimania: Niflheim already conquered Tenebrae 397 years ago but there was still a hidden place the Empire did not know of. Which is where Noctis and Regis stayed.)

Luna who is taught to remain strong willed no matter what still had one thing to look forward to. It was the notebook she had given to Noctis. (Based on how happy and excited she looks in the cutscenes of Umbra arriving.) Because of her duty as Oracle, she had to look strong. Everyone always had high hopes and respected her. It's sad how she never had a real childhood.

In the beginning, the back and forth notebook exchanging happen several times a day. The worried Noctis swore to save Luna one day.

Ravus was the one who first found out about her contacting Noctis. He wasn't too happy about it as it will only spew trouble if the Empire finds out she has been keeping contact with Lucis. Ravus can't persuade his sister. He will snitch on her to get it out of the way sooner than having them find out about it on their own later. (Reminder that Ravus is 16 at this time and blames the Lucis for the loss of his late mother. Teenage angst - he can't stand for this. Getting on the Empire's good side is the most logical course of action to protect what's left dear to him.)

Niflheim Captain Caligo Ulldor

In that same week, one of the Empire's captains: Caligo had been assigned to keep an eye on Lunafreya and Tenebrae as a whole. He found it odd how she bought stickers every day. Ravus will be the one to snitch Luna out and tell Caligo that there is something suspicious about it.

Later that night, he peeked into her room and saw her picking between stickers and pasting them in a notebook she also writes in. Caligo walks into her room normally while addressing her formally. Luna quickly tried to hide the notebook. Pryna is in the room as well. Caligo attempts to get Luna to give a hints like asking about if she has means to communicate outside, and warns her if a citizen of Niflheim betrays their nation it won't go unpunished regardless of their background. Caligo is trying to scare Luna but she will stand firm.

By the end when Caligo is almost done inspecting the room and is standing right before where Luna hid her notebook, he will mention a possible magical notebook as he reaches out for it. Luna reacted. Basically, Caligo had been playing her and just trying to see how she would react if he mentions the notebook magical and grab it at the same time. (Is that making him too sneaky?)

Luna's reaction is what confirms the authenticity of the notebook. Caligo will be taking it and report about it. Luna struggles to snatch it back as Caligo easily overpowers her. Not even Pryna could be of much help and even got kicked badly. Caligo tells Luna she will be charged for assaulting an Empire officer as well. Caligo has left the room.

Lunafreya’s Move

Left defeated and powerless, Luna hugs Pryna on her bed and looks for any bad wounds. After a short pause, Luna started sobbing and crying. She snuggles up to Pryna. With a hoarse voice she calls out to her mother who is no more.

Pryna is fast asleep with Luna's arms around her. As for Luna, it was a sleepless night. She decides to try one more time to get her notebook back. Gently, she lets her embrace off of Pryna as to not wake her up. Luna leaves her bedroom.

Lunafreya is headed for Caligo's office in hopes to find her notebook laying there. His office is locked so Luna has to find an alternative method to sneak in. Fortunately, she knows spare keys exist for this specific office room Caligo had taken for himself. Luna will have to stealthily traverse to where the spare keys are stored. There are Niflheim infantrymen on patrol but she will pass through them.

Luna has made it back in front of Caligo's office and is ready to unlock the door. She hopes she is not mistaken about the key. The door unlocks. Feeling accomplished, she slowly enters the room staying as quiet as possible. After several steps closer, she notices Caligo isn't even around. She focuses on finding her notebook and she will find it.

With the notebook retrieved it is time to leave. But the moment she set a foot out of the office, Luna got grabbed by her arm. It was Caligo and he does not look pleased. His grasp is starting to hurt Luna as she tries to flee. Caligo pushes Luna back making her fall. (Similar to the Dawn trailer but with the notebook being dropped too.)

She has nowhere to go with Caligo blocking the door. He questions her for sneaking around so late and expects the Oracle's daughter to be smarter than this. He walks in closer. Luna just throws some tools like pencils at him and threatens him to stay away. Lightning struck right the moment after she said that and it looked like there was a tall figure behind Luna but it wasn't clear. Luna shows not a sliver fear.

Lunafreya’s Retaliation

Caligo will try to capture Luna and claims he is allowed to punish criminals if they don't work along. Luna will throw more small objects she finds while doing her best to avoid being grabbed.

A few notable events:

Caligo, when lured right in front of the window gets blinded briefly by a perfectly timed lightning strike. It was as if the forces of nature/Gods were on her side of which the thought lowered Caligo's morale a little bit. 

Caligo did catch Luna but got smashed in the head by a potted plant that was near her and escapes. Luna got to quickly grab her notebook and leave. She is running as fast as she possibly can.

Caligo contacts his infantrymen. Before he can chase after Luna, a figure dressed in black stood at the door entrance. Caligo recognizes this figure. It's Gentiana, the messenger who settled with the Nox Fleuret family ever since Lunafreya was born. He is not scared of a mere messenger. But what was new was that Gentiana was wielding a trident he did not recognize. As Caligo tries to make his way past her, Gentiana used magic via the Trident and blew Caligo back and unconscious. Luna was able to notice a bright flashing light some distance behind her. She doesn't believe it was lightning.

Luna is nearing her bedroom. 

But alas, right before she could reach for her bedroom door, she got pointed at with countless red laser sights. A plethora of flashlights were blinding her. She was ordered to drop everything and raise her hands. She had nowhere to run. It seems it was all for naught.

Lovers’ Notebook

Luna is forced back in her room and robbed of her notebook. She is greeted by both Umbra and Pryna. (Umbra returned when Gentiana returned.)

Caligo's men have put the notebook back in the captain’s office. They tend to Caligo's wounds. As they are busy with him, it can be seen the notebook got picked up by feminine hands and replaced with another notebook that is identical.

Back in Lunafreya's room. As luna was petting her dogs, she was about to cry again, unable to retain her strong demeanor... But before that would happen, she was presented a notebook in front of her by Gentiana. She compliments Luna she has done well. Luna is overjoyed and quickly browsed over a few pages to see if it was still intact. She held her notebook dearly. A moment after, Luna wipes away her few tears and hugs Gentiana, thanking her. (It can be speculated everything was a trial of sorts.)

Next Day

Caligo has bandages around his head and hand. Likely caused by the sharp pieces of the potted plant. The last thing he remembers is Lunafreya smashing his head in with a potted plant. It turns out Luna's notebook was nothing more than a sticker book. Apparently, it contains stickers that aren't from Tenebrae so they decided to keep this "magical notebook". There was no text in it even though Caligo claims there was. Basically, Gentiana put stickers from Lucis and Tenebrae in the replaced notebook so it's still a believable fake.

Luna was just done placing a sticker and wrote something in her notebook. She was ready to send it off with Umbra but Ravus entered the room. He informs her of the aftermath about Caligo and the fake notebook trick. Luna accuses Ravus for telling them about it, she can't believe he would do that. There was nobody else who could have known. Ravus argues she is too careless, it's too risky, and wants her to cut her ties off with that boy. If Luna won't do it herself, Ravus will do it himself. Before Ravus gets to leave the room, Luna calls back at him, pleading to keep it a secret. She looks at her notebook held in her hands and then at Umbra right next to her who was ready to leave. After a pause, she tells Ravus that perhaps he is right. Luna promises that she won't write in the notebook as frequent anymore. And perhaps, she might get in the way of Noctis' studies. (That last sentence wasn't really directed at Ravus but just her own muttering.)

After a short pause and a sigh, Ravus will accept. He promises Luna one thing before he leaves. He will climb the ladder and swears that one day Tenebrae will be under a different captain. Ravus has left the room.

[FFXV] Gentiana & Luna Key Scene: Japanese Translation

In the scene where Gentiana and Luna are in Luna’s chambers, Gentiana’s lines in English are still very much the same as in Japanese with some slight differences. Luna’s lines, however, are quite different but what remains the same is how humble she is and the happiness she feels about the prospect of her being able to see Noctis again.  To see other key scenes from FFXV that I’ve translated, please go here. Disclaimer: These translations and any interpretations made are entirely my own. —————————————————————————————————- Gentiana: かつてレギスは聖石に選ばれたノクティスの運命を憂えていた。その顔はテネブラエに来て変化した。レギスも、寂しげだったノクティスも神凪としてではない。大きな力があなたにはある。 Katsute Regisu wa seiseki ni erabareta Nokutisu no unmei wo ureeteita. Sono kao wa Teneburae ni kite henka shita. Regisu mo, samishige datta Nokutisu mo kannagi toshite de wa nai. Ooki na chikara ga anata ni wa aru. “Before, Regis felt great sorrow and grief for Noctis’ fate as one who had been chosen by the crystal. However, since coming to Tenebrae, their countenances changed. Regis, a lonely Noctis as well…These changes did not occur because you are the Oracle. There is a great power residing within you.” Luna: わたしは神凪である以外に特別な力など持っていません。ただ。。。本当は婚約のお話をとても嬉しく思いました。ノクティス様にもう一度お会いできるかもしれない、それが本当に少しの間でもよくて。 Watashi wa kannagi de aru igai ni tokubetsu na chikara nado motteimasen. Tada…hontou wa konyaku no hanashi wo totemo ureshiku omoimashita. Nokutisu-sama ni mouichido oai dekiru kamoshirenai, sore ga hontou ni sukoshi no aida demo yokute. “Other than the abilities I have as the Oracle, I do not possess any kind of special powers. Just that…The truth is when there was talk of our engagement, I was so very happy. To be able to meet with Noctis once more, even if only for a short while, would be wonderful.” わたしの中にそれを嬉しく思う気持ちがあるから、持てる力のすべてでノクティス様をお支えしようと思っているのです。 Watashi no naka ni sore wo ureshiku omou kimochi ga aru kara, moteru chikara no subete de Nokutisu-sama wo osasae shiyou to omotteiru no desu. “It is because of these feelings of happiness that I want to support Noctis with everything I have.”  Translation Notes: 1. “Nokutisu-sama ni mouichido oai dekiru kamoshirenai…” (ノクティス様にもう一度お会いできるかもしれない) - Luna is thinking aloud in this line, which makes it a little harder to translate into English. Translated more literally, what she said would be something like “I might be able to meet with Noctis again, even if it is only for a short while - that would be good/wonderful.” “Kamoshirenai” means “might” and isn’t always as easily translatable in English depending on the context. Overall, it is clear in this line that Luna is grateful that their engagement, while originally political in nature, will allow them to meet once more. 2. “Watashi no naka ni sore wo ureshiku omou kimochi ga aru kara…” ( わたしの中にそれを嬉しく思う気持ちがあるから) translated more literally would be “Because of this feeling of happiness (of meeting with Noctis again) that resides within me…”  3. “Moteru chikara no subete de…” ( 持てる力のすべてで ) can be directly translated as “With all of the strength and power that I possess.” I wasn’t sure if this direct translation would flow as well so I chose to use “with everything I have.” 4. “…osasae shiyou to omotteiru no desu.” (…お支えしようと思っているのです。) “…you to [verb]” is a Japanese grammar pattern that suggests you will exert effort in order to try and achieve something. “…omotteiru” means “to think.” So overall this entire line would be translated more literally as “Because of this feeling of happiness that resides within me, I think that I will try to support Noctis with all of the strength and power that I possess.”

I just realized something in FFXV

So the root word of Noctis’ name is “noct” which comes from the Latin word “nocte” which means “of/at night”. So he’s effectively named the “Prince of Night”

The root of Lunafreya’s name is “Luna” which means “moon”. So she’s effectively named “Lady Moon”

So the Prince of Night was destined to marry Lady Moon. She was the moon to his night.

Everyone probably already knows this but I just find the wordplay in this game amazing, I’m sorry
