Rehearsals, Pt. 1
Tumblr media
One of the most wonderful qualities of actors is their energy and enthusiasm. By the time they've arrived on set, or to rehearsals, we've rewritten the script countless times, headached over the schedule and stressed about finding the right location. It's easy to get burnt out by it all. However, when a group of talented and motivated actors walk into the room, bursting with ideas, their enthusiasm is infectious. I've said it before and I'll say it again, when actors exceed your expectations, it's the most humbling experience.
For the first time we got to see the majority of our cast together, and it's so fitting then that the recurring topic of discussion was the relationships between the characters. This is something Jeremy, my co-creator, and I established very early on in the development of "Drama Class". Seeing it brought up again, in finding the characters, has instilled the greatest hope and motivation in me. It's been a busy couple of weeks in the "Drama Class" camp, but rehearsing with 4/6'ths of our core cast today has re-energised the passion for the project, and passion is paramount, always. To Rupert, Talin, Sam and Stuart, thank you or keeping me in hysterics all day. Bravo!

Auditions Round 2
Tumblr media
January 28th in Sydney, Australia 2013 was a day of torrential rain, and even with water flying all over the place they still charge $4 for a bottle of water. So first of all, big thank you to everybody who came to Circular Quay for the last round of auditions. All of our auditionees were enthusiastic, challenging, creative and hilarious! Seriously I was laughing a lot. Jeremy (co-creator) kept having to reassure those people it was good thing. Definitely was. We've got some great candidates for the cast and we'll be announcing them in due time, once it's all locked in.

Auditions Round 1
Today we had the first round of auditions for "Drama Class", and we are definitely off to a great start. As a writer and director, it's the greatest joy when actors come in and exceed your expectations. Everything in your head starts to become real, and it was amazing. Round two begins Monday the 28th and it's looking to be an even fuller day than today. Shortly after we will be announcing the full cast and moving into rehearsals. I can't wait. Tonight I'm inspired to write so thank you to all the actors who came in. We'll (hopefully) see some of you soon.

LOGLINE When an arrogant high school rugby star takes HSC drama as a bludge, he discovers an unexpressed desire for the stage and must unify his distrustful and dysfunctional group of misfit classmates so they can pass the final performance and follow their dreams. INTRODUCTION While you’re in it, the HSC feels like the most important moment of your life. The stakes – socially, scholastically and romantically – are bigger than life or death to a year twelve student. So what would it be like for a group of people who are already highly-strung and neurotic: actors! THE FORMAT Taking inspiration from shows such as Summer Heights High and The Office, Drama Class is a mockumentary web series, released in real time over the course of the HSC schedule, mapping the progress of an HSC drama class as they head towards their year-ending performance. Episodes run three to five minutes.
ROLES WE ARE CASTING
Note: All roles are open to any ethnicity. We will see actors in their 20s for the teenage roles. This is an ensemble show ala Community or The Office. Davo is the protagonist, but all characters will have opportunities to carry storylines. DAVO (17) The uber-jock. Hunky star of the high-school rugby league team and a heartbreaker among the school’s female population. Unreconstructed, arrogant, ignorant but a skilled manipulator. Ability to play rugby league a plus, but not a prerequisite. CHRISTINA (18) Tightly wound over-achiever. Debating champ, student council member and frosty young liberal, one of the best students in the class. MARTIN (17) Pretentious Olivier-wannabe. All his favourite playwrights and most of his favourite actors are dead. Considers himself the leader of the class, but one one else does. RACHEL (17) Not quite a punk, but antisocial to a fault. Deadpan snarker whose main pleasure in life is undercutting Martin, and now Davo. Cute, but hoping people won’t notice. KEANU (17) The method actor. Spends each episode in character as an iconic film actor or character eg. Sean Connery, Jack Nicholson, Hannibal Lector, etc. Impressionist skills a plus. MS. CRANEY (Late 30s/40s) The class teacher. A washed up soap star clinging to her faded 90s fame. Sees acting as life’s highest calling and herself as the example her students should aspire to. The classroom is her stage.
