Astarion would make an awful father as ascended (if he didn't outright kill it, pre or post born), and wouldn't be one as spawn as he's not a true vampire, and arguably would be a bad one even as spawn because he's got centuries of trauma to fix first (plus he's naturally an asshole and can't plan his way out of a paper bag).

friendly reminder that astarion fell for kindness. he started genuinely caring because of kindness. because the "fierce leader" of their group helped people, helped him. it wasn't power, it wasn't authority, it wasn't seduction, it wasn't a promise of revenge - it was kindness, selflessness, companionship. it felt wrong and it felt strange but that's what got him to fall in love (or the closest thing to it). his "nice, simple plan" of seduction and manipulation fell apart because someone was good, because someone protected and accepted him. i think that says a lot about him.

Started a new run of BG3 and in character creation they're all just naked. Just bits all flopping about nekkid, going through their little introductory moves all saucily.

And I'm just browsing through them completely unresponsive to this oddity until I hit Dark Urge origin and the game freezes on a nude, male dragonborn - and I think what the fuck, what happened - shaking my steamdeck in frustration and having to reboot - and it's only when I return to character creation minutes later that I notice they're supposed to be clothed.

Well. I wonder what that says about me.

I'm not quite sure how to answer this. But here we go lol

I don't hide the fact that I'm an AA girlie. I will shout it loud and proud from the rooftops. That's my screwed up toxic blorbo and I love him to death.

BUT.

Spawn A is, technically, the "morally correct" ending. It's the LESS CONTROVERSIAL ending. It's the easier to swallow ending. It's the happily-ever-after ending. And that is FINE. I think most people would agree from a moral standpoint that refusing to sacrifice the lives of 7007 people in exchange for power is probably the morally correct and less controversial move.

BUT.

You can also play your own character however you want. If your Tav is evil and you want to manipulate him, Astarion is morally gray enough to where it probably would work. At least for a little while. But given Spawn A grows a sense of self by the end of the game, he'd call your character out on it at some point. He's not going to let you continue to gaslight and manipulate him. He's not a doormat.

Spawn A =/= doormat. I don't think that's what you're trying to say here, but I have seen those sentiments within the community before in discussions of Spawn A vs. AA.

I've said this before, but imo, Spawn A is part of AA, and vice versa. They're two sides of the same coin. AA already exists within Spawn A, and still does regardless of refusing the ascension. Spawn A still exists within AA post-ascension. They are one in the same. It's just the matter of whose face you're looking at in any given moment.

I love both endings and support them both. I also support people playing the game however they want, because it's a game. It's your DnD run. You're the DM, to a degree. Do whatever you want.

Astarion has the “it’s okay to murder people, but it’s never okay to disrespect my spouse.” energy and he would most definitely be okay with murdering anyone who would insult you because “insult adds to injury”, according to his judgment.

I agree with you. It seems so silly to rain on peoples parade if you don’t like AA. Just don’t interact with the content? It’s that easy. That and AA lovers aren’t children? We don’t need to have a lesson in whatever it is they think is wrong with AA or us.

I do think that what upsets people is that he’s chaotic evil and stayed chaotic evil if you ascend him. But he has the potential to be chaotic neutral if he stays a spawn? Idk lol but it made me think of Spike from BtVS. I always thought he was chaotic evil. But he becomes chaotic neutral through Buffy and the Scooby gang… and the chip in his head.

Oh, but if you don't interact with the content or people who like the content, however could you tell them they're wrong?

However could you inform these sad, lonely, clearly unstable manipulator-apologists that their personal choices are invalid and that maybe they should get real life, professional help for their obvious tendency to be attracted to abusive partners... in safe, fictional, controlled settings?

People like to feel justified in being righteous, maybe.

The thing I like about Spawn Astarion is that he is full of potential: he, like Spike, must always try to do better. Spawn Astarion, in a good playthrough, wants to be good and do good, but it will always be harder for him because that is not innately part of his character. He's been abused and he's still a vampire. He is radiantly hopeful in his epilogue, which shows his growth: he is beautiful and brave, but not fixed. He is reaching, and healing, but not done yet. There is even the chance that he never will be.

I think a lot of people relate to that - his constant drive to do good in spite of his internal and external demons. I fell in love with it myself, because I love that he's trying and I love that he's succeeding, but I also love that it's hard. A lot of people have made the claim that Spawn Astarion is more "human," and I think it has a lot to do with this idea: that living is a constant struggle, but to find happiness and remain optimistic anyway is still possible.

But that doesn't give people the right to police other's choices or preferences. And it doesn't detract from Ascended Astarion's ending, either. He's flourishing as a tyrannical Ascendant and I am so happy for him then, too.

The pull these two have towards each other just literally overpowering EVERYTHING else??? Spells, memory loss, mind control - all overpowered by the connection they have with each other. I just simply CANNOT with these two!!!
