Yesterday the world, humanity, For-Benefit-Enterprise made a huge advancement !! ‪#‎gamechangers500 ‪#‎globalglitterati ‪#‎whitehouse ‪#‎bethedifference Message from Andrew Hewitt: Today major progress was made in developing the For-Benefit business sector. After 8 months of collaboration, the Fourth Sector Mapping Initiative presented on its progress at George Washington University in DC. I was privileged to present on behalf of the council to a room of White House representatives, policy makers, academics, and For-Benefit business leaders. I even wore a tie. The outcome: We have constructed a taxonomy to draw a line in the sand to effectively differentiate a For-Benefit business from For-Profits and Non-Profits. This was no small task as defining “benefit” is highly subjective and there is significant overlap with the For-Profit and Non-Profit sectors. This is why the term “social entrepreneur” means different things to different groups—it’s never been properly defined in a way that it could be regulated by law. In sum, this new For-Benefit sector (AKA the Fourth Sector, to sit alongside the Private, Public, and Government sectors) contains a spectrum of different entity forms. The qualifying boundary has been defined by two characteristics: 1. Pursuing a social / environmental purpose is the primary or extensive focus of the organization. 2. The organization earns the majority of its income through business activity (as opposed to grants, donations, tax revenue) Within the Fourth Sector boundary are a variety of sub-classes. At one end of the spectrum are businesses that operate more like non-profits by limiting profit distribution, having democratic and transparent governance structures, and creating mission-lock to prevent a sale or capital injections from steering the organization away from the mission. At the other end of the spectrum of For-Benefit forms are organizations that look more like traditional businesses, not limiting profit distributions to owners, yet having an extensive focus on maximizing social benefit through business practices and/or their product or service.
