Colten Boushie and his four friends were trying to get help for a flat tire when the 22-year-old was fatally shot in a farmyard earlier this week, says a witness.

“The guy came out of nowhere,” said 21-year-old Eric Meechance, who was sitting in the vehicle’s back seat with his girlfriend.

Meechance said he and his friends were unarmed and neither attacked nor threatened the man. Gerald Stanley, 54, is charged with second-degree murder and appeared in North Battleford provincial court on Thursday.

Meechance said they’d spent the day swimming and drinking at a nearby lake. On the way home, late in the afternoon, they got a flat tire. They drove into a farmyard and the chaos began shortly after.

“Some guy came out and smashed in the front windshield,” Meechance said.

The panicked driver — not Boushie — tried to drive away, but the flat tire and broken front window resulted in the vehicle colliding with an unoccupied parked car.

At that point, Meechance said he became even more fearful of the armed man, who was yelling, “Get the f — k out of here.”

Meechance said he and one other vehicle occupant ran away, and he heard multiple gunshots just seconds later.

He darted into a bush to hide and became separated from the other person, then emerged on the other side of the bush and sprinted for about two kilometres along the dirt road before he stopped to walk, he said.

He was then picked up by police.

Meechance said police questioned all of them about potential theft of property, but they had stolen nothing and were not charged.

“We just wanted to get some help (for a flat tire,) that’s all.”
