I’m racist and so are you

History is in a very interesting time and we have the option to stand or sit, even though sitting can be just as damaging as standing for the wrong reasons. My nation- The United States of America- has a long damaging history of oppression of the people who reside within its borders. From oppression and genocide of Indigenous Americans to the enslavement of those they saw as lesser-than to themselves. 

Many of us would love to assume that we have laid that chapter of history down to rest years prior to our birth, but in reality we are living, breathing racists. Everyone- and I truly do mean EVERYONE is racist. Whether it is internalized or simply coded into you from a young age, we are all racist in our own respect. You can not be blamed for the way you were raised or the ideology you were taught, but it does not give you an excuse to be racist. Not passively or actively. In order to not succumb to our society's darker parts we must stand up for those who may feel unable to stand up for themselves. You must be actively anti-racist, there is no such thing as a simple “I’m not racist”- because that simply isn’t true. 

All Cops Are Bastards, Black Lives Matter, BIPOC spaces should be left to BIPOC individuals, everyone is racist and the LGBTQIA+ community deserves safety. You have the option to sit in silence and allow these problems to fester, be my guest, but do dare say you’re not racist if you are not speaking up and challenging racism head-on.

Joel Graham @jgmyriad was the first of my portrait subjects to like Friday’s post. 👋 Hi Joel! 👋 . I began shooting my Queer Kids project 14 years ago and returned to my hometown, Denver for the second shoot of the series in the spring of 2007. Back then I found my subjects primarily through MySpace so I’m assuming this was how Joel and I found each other. Joel was 19 here and although he now lives on the other side of the country, we still keep in touch and even occasionally get to see each other all these many years later, a testament to one of the project’s greatest gifts: the long-lasting friendships that have been made as a result.
