How to take Care of Baby Chicks
Care of Baby Chicks is a huge challenge for first-time owners in poultry farming. Baby chicks are a great addition to the family but they require proper care for healthy growth and development. If you fail to look after your baby chicks then it may result in the mortality of chicks.
Tumblr media
In this article, we will cover every detail on How to Take Care of Baby Chicks from the day of hatching till maturity. We’ll also cover every aspect from brooding to bedding, feeding protocols, health issues with treatments, and much more. So stay tuned with us.
Before going into the detail on the care guide of chicks. I want to ask a question from you, What is your purpose for raising baby chicks?
Raising Baby Chicks: What is your purpose?
Let’s have an example if you want to buy a car, but you don’t know the features of that car, what to see before buying a car and how to drive a car, then surely your money will be going to waste, and you will suffer a loss. In the same way, if you don’t know about chicks breed, care of baby chicks, and other than before raising baby chicks, you should know all the details on how to take care of Baby Chicks from day-old after hatching to till maturity.
If you want to raise chicks for getting eggs, you should raise layer breed. Broilers are for meat purposes. Some people raise fancy birds like Bantam etc
Take your time and read from different articles, catalogs, and research papers. It will save you some headaches down the line. You can check out our detailed discussion about the chicken breeds. This article is a great place to start researching your prospective breeds. It will tell you the origin of each chicken breed, egg-laying capability, pure breed characteristics, and much more.

Baby Chicks for Sale: Where to Buy Baby Chicks?
If you selected which type of chicken breed you’re going to adopt, then the next most important thing is Where to buy baby chicks, or is there any sale for baby chicks? These are the frequently asked questions by the people. The answer is simple: There are many ways to buy baby chicks, and it depends upon your choice whether you prefer an online chicks supplier service or purchase from a local farm seller.
Infact, in my opinion, the buying of baby chicks depends on how long you’re willing to wait for eggs. For example, if you want to buy day-old chicks, then hatchery should be your priority.
Day Old Chicks:
You can buy day-old chicks from hatcheries either online or by a local farm. The main thing to consider here before buying day-old baby chicks is to ensure that either they have done proper vaccination from problems like Newcastle, Marek’s diseases or not.
Pullets:
Pullets are female chicks that yet did not give any egg. It is about 20 weeks old and is expensive than day-old chicks. You can buy it from a local farm seller or hatchery.
Mature Egg laying Hens:
If you are thinking to buy those hens that are already laying eggs then it’s easy to buy. You can get it from local sellers. There is no need for any hatchery to buy these hens. But in my opinion, it is not a suitable choice for first-time owners.
Hatch Your Own Chick at Home Using Incubator:
The other way is to get your own hatched eggs. I do not recommend this for a first-time chicken owner. Incubation is never straightforward (in my experience), and it’s an important factor in the care of baby chicks. So, you must have to know all the guidelines on how to use an incubator for proper hatching
Some Major hatcheries and Farm from where you can buy baby chicks:
Besides chickens, online hatcheries also offer turkeys, geese, guinea, ducks, and more. Make sure you read the full guidelines because some of the prices look attractive but require a minimum order of a larger quantity than some other companies. Some offer free shipping, while others only ship several times a year. Below are some of the hatcheries from where you can buy baby chicks:
Privett Hatchery
My Pet Chicken
Murray McMurray Hatchery
J.M. Hatchery
Freedom Ranger Hatchery
If you live in Uk then you can Buy from here

Equipment needed for Care of Baby Chicks
Till now, we have discussed in detail ” why are you raising chicks and from where you can buy them. Now it comes to equipment that is required for proper care of baby chicks.
Brooder for Baby Chicks:
A brooder is a basic requirement for the care of baby chicks. It’s like a home with proper facilities that are required for the proper growth of chicks. It is like a container rolled into a circular shape with pine shavings or another embedding medium with a light on the top. It can be as simple as a cardboard piece, or can be made of metal depending upon the budget. Now let discuss what makes a brooder an ideal one.
Shape of the Brooder:
The brooder should be circular and should not be square or rectangular because it creates the corners in the brooders, and when baby chicks are roaming away from the center of the brooder there are greater chances that they all will gather at the corners with one jumping on another. This problem leads to suffocation in baby chicks that can cause death.
Geometry of Brooder:
The wall of the brooder should be at least 18 inches high to avoids the chicks to jump out of the brooder that may cause any injury. Because day-old baby cheeks are week and their skeleton is not strong enough to protect them that is why it’s the most important thing for the Care of Baby Chicks.
Rodent-Proof Brooder :
The brooder should be rodent-proof, which means it must be kept indoors or at such places where there is no other pet that can attack chicks.
Brooder Must be at Dry Places:
The brooder must be in dry places because if the surface is wet then it will lead to many health issues like cold, flu, and other respiratory problems. Another main thing is that salmonella also grows in wet places, so there will be chances of salmonella infection in poultry birds.
Bedding of Brooder:
The floor or bedding of the brooder should be smooth to walk. If it is slippery, it can lead to leg injuries in baby chicks like spraddle legs, etc.
Enough Space in Brooder:
There must be enough space for the chicks to walk in the brooder. According to size each bird should have 1.5 sqft space.
Dont Use Plastic Brooder:
The material used for making the brooder should not be plastic; because; in a brooder, light is present for keeping the chicks warm. Hight temperature can melt the plastic that further falls onto the bedding of the brooder and can catch fire. So beware of that.

CHow to Care of Baby Chicks in Winter and Summer
As I already mentioned, temperature regulation has an impact on the mortality of baby chicks. If you fail to regulate brooder temperature, then the consequences will be daring. So for proper Care of Baby Chicks, the temperature has to be maintained in an ideal range to protect the baby chick from any health issue.
Care of Baby Chicks in Winter:
Care of Baby Chicks in Winter is challenging. In winter, it is necessary to note the temperature of the brooder. A temperature sensor can be used for this purpose. Any deviation from the ideal temperature needs calls for action.
In Winter season keeps the day-old chicks in a warm place until they are fully feathered. For this purpose, you can use a heating fan in the brooder or a red light heating source.
How to Know If Your Baby Chicks are Cold?
If you look that the baby chicks start gathering near the heating source in the brooder, then this is the indication that your baby chicks are feeling cold. Another indication is a loud, high-pitched cheeping sound. On examination, their legs will be cold to the touch. Chicks look swollen.
What to do to keep them warm: Ideal temperature of Brooder in Winter

How to Treat Infectious Bursal Disease (Gumboro) in Poultry
Infectious Bursal Disease (Gumboro) is a highly contagious viral disease of young domesticated chickens. The morbidity rate of this disease is high as compared to its mortality rate. So if your birds are infected with IBD then don’t be worry, because this article will help you a lot. In this article, we will learn every minute detail about Gumboro. So let’s get into detail.
Tumblr media
What is Infectious Bursal Disease?
Infectious Bursal Disease is also known as Gumboro. It is a viral disease that is caused by IBDV. Chickens at the age of 3-6 weeks are highly susceptible to IBD. This viral disease affects the immune system of chickens by decreasing the production of B-lymphocytes in the Bursa of Fabricius.
Cause of Gumboro in Chickens:
Gumboro or Infectious Bursal Disease is caused by birnavirus ( infectious bursal disease virus: IBDV ). This virus spreads through either direct contact or by some mechanical spread. There are two serotypes of IBDV. Type 1 is the major cause of gumboro in young chickens. Type 2 of IBDV is responsible for causing infectious bursal disease in turkeys also.
The main thing to note here is, type 2 serotype of IBDV is not responsible for clinical disease and immunosuppression.
Tumblr media
Symptoms of Infectious Bursal Disease:
The intensity of infection depends upon chicken breeds, age, and virulence of the virus. Infection may be clinical or subclinical. Subclinical infection occurs mostly at 3 weeks of age. Clinical infections occur when chickens wane from the mother’s immunity. The symptoms of clinical infection appear because of the piling of immature B lymphocytes around the cloaca.
A large mortality ratio is the indicator of subclinical infection. Actually, the main cause of these deaths is the destruction of immature B-lymphocytes around the bursa of fabrics. This destruction leads to immunosuppression. Humoral immunity is most severely affected, the cell-mediated immune response is affected to a lesser extent.
The signs and symptoms are most obvious in clinical infections. In clinical infections, the onset of the disease occurs after an incubation of 3–4 days. The clinical signs and symptoms of infectious bursal disease are:
Dehydration beacuse of watery diarrhea
Ruffled feathers
Atrophy of cloacal muscles
Yellowish exudate around cloaca
Soiled vent feathers
Vent picking
Inflammation of cloaca
Slight tremor at onset of the disease
You may notice that the infected birds have unsteady gait. A sudden rise in body temperature is followed by a drop to subnormal temperature, prostration, and death.
Tumblr media
Postmortem Findings:
The lesions are the major findings during necropsy. The type of lesions may vary and it depends upon the type of IBDV. The virus that causes clinical infection produces yellowish, edematous lesions around the bursa. The swelling is also an obvious sign in such findings.
Some IBDV strains can cause atrophy of the cloacal bursa without the appearance of gross lesions in that organ.
Long story short during the postmortem, all affected birds have bursal changes and these changes are
Swelling of Bursa of Fabricus
Oblong shape of bursa
Color change
Formation of a gelatinous film around the bursa
Tumblr media
Diagnosis of Gumboro in Chickens:
Both macroscopic and microscopic lesions can help in the diagnosis of gumboro in chickens. But these lesions can confuse the pathologist with other viral infections like Coccidiosis and Marek’s disease. So, for better confirmation of Infectious Bursa Disease molecular detection of the viral VP2 gene is to be done by using RT-PCR.
Initially, the diagnosis is accomplished by examining the gross lesions around the cloaca then microscopic analysis of the bursa for lymphocyte depletion in the follicles should be done. For an accurate diagnosis, reverse transcriptase PCR is used to identify the viral genome in bursa tissue. This is how the diagnosis is done.

Coccidiosis in Poultry | Symptoms, and Treatments
Coccidiosis in Poultry is a very common health issue that needs to be treated to avoid any deadly consequences. If Coccidiosis is left untreated, then it can lead to mortality of poultry birds.
Tumblr media
If you are new to the poultry sector, or not hear the word Coccidiosis ever before, then this is the right place for you; because in this article, we are going to cover every single detail about Coccidiosis in Poultry. So, stay tuned with us.
What is Coccidiosis in Poultry
Coccidiosis in Poultry is an intestinal disease that is caused by a protozoan ( coccidia ) that attaches itself to the intestinal lining and thus damages the wall of the gut leading to bleeding that can be seen in the droppings of birds. This protozoan prevents the absorption of feed ingredients from feed and creates such an environment in the gut that harbors a large number of bacteria.
What is the Cause of Coccidiosis in Poultry
Coccidiosis in Poultry is caused by a protozoan named coccidia. This parasitic protozoan belongs to the phylum Apicomplexan, the family Eimeriidae. Most species belong to the genus Eimeria. Coccidia spreads through infected bird’s droppings.
Tumblr media
Life Cycle of Coccidia:
For a better understanding of Coccidiosis in Poultry, you should have to know about the Life Cycle of Coccidia. The life cycle of Coccidia starts with a microscopic egg (oocyst).
Stage -1 Shedding of Unsporulated Oocysts by Infective Birds
The infected birds shed the unsporulated oocysts in their droppings. These oocysts are not infective because they are unsporulated. These unsporulated oocysts can survive for at least one year if the conditions will be favorable for them. They can tolerate harsh environments because of their tough-resistant outer wall.
Stage -2 Conversion of Unsporulated Oocysts to Sporulates Cysts
Oocysts do not survive well at temperatures below -30°C or above 40°C; within this temperature range, oocysts may survive ≥ 1 yr. The unsporulated oocyst is then converted into sporulated oocyst under suitable conditions like when temperature, humidity, and oxygen are favorable. The temperature requirement for the conversion of unsporulated oocyst to sporulated is 21-32° C.
Stage -3 Formation of Sporozoites withinh Sporocysts of Oocyst
Sporulation generally occurs in moist, humid conditions. Areas around feeders and waterers are the prime location for these parasites, especially if these areas are not cleaned and maintained well. During sporulation, the amorphous protoplasm develops into small bodies (sporozoites) within secondary cysts (sporocysts) in the oocyst.
In Eimeria spp, the sporulated oocyst has four sporocysts, each containing two sporozoites; in Isospora spp, the sporulated oocyst has two sporocysts, each containing four sporozoites.
Stage -4 Sporozoited into Merozoites within Intestinal Epithelium
When the sporulated oocyst is ingested by a susceptible animal, the sporozoites escape from the oocyst, invade the intestinal mucosa or epithelial cells in other locations, and develop intracellularly into multinucleate schizonts (also called meronts). Each nucleus develops into an infective body called a merozoite; merozoites enter new cells and repeat the process.
Stage -5 Formation of Gametes for Next Generation
After a variable number of asexual generations, merozoites develop into either macrogametocytes (females) or microgametocytes (males). These produce a single macrogamete or many microgametes in a host cell. After being fertilized by a microgamete, the macrogamete develops into an oocyst. The oocysts have resistant walls and are discharged unsporulated in the feces.
Tumblr media
Symptoms of Coccidiosis in Poultry
The most common Symptoms of Coccidiosis in Poultry are blood and mucus in the droppings of birds but keep in mind that sometimes birds shed dropping in red or dark brown color so don’t get confused with that. The best way to confirm that either this type of dropping is a sign of cocci or not is Vet examination, and then your vet will do a dropping analysis.
Also note, blood in poop is not necessarily always a symptom, so also look out the other Symptoms of Coccidiosis in Poultry:
Lethargic chickens with not easy to move around
Plae color comb and skin also appears yellowish
loss of appetite
Ruffled feathers
The declining growth rate in baby chicks
Weight loss
Decrease egg production or stops at all
Diarrheal droppings
All these symptoms could be a result of other diseases, so the only way to know for sure that you’re dealing with coccidiosis is to talk to your vet.
Tumblr media
Postmortem Findings of Coccidiosis in Poultry
The most common postmortem findings in Coccidiosis in Poultry birds are lesions throughout the intestine of birds. Why these lesions are present? This is because of the destruction of the intestinal epithelium. This may be accompanied by hemorrhage into the lumen of the intestine, catarrhal inflammation, and diarrhea. There are various types of poultry birds so we are going to discuss one by one.
Coccidiosis in Poultry Chickens:
In Chicken birds, coccidiosis is caused by a large number of Eimeriidae species. we will sum up according to the location of eimeriidae species.
1- Eimeriidae tenella:
If lesions are present only in cecum area of chickens then this an indication, that this coccidiosis is caused by Eimeriidae tenella. E tenella can be confirmed by the presence of bloody discharge and by cecum cores ( cecum cores are the clotted blood tissue debris, and oocysts around cloaca ).
2- Eimeriidae necatrix:
This species is responsible for causing coccidiosis in the small intestine and also cecum of chickens. When we see such types of coccidiosis lesions under a microscope then we see small white spots with bright or dull red lesions on the serosal surface.  This appearance is sometimes described as “salt and pepper.
3- Eimeriidae acervulina:
The lesions which are caused by this eimeriidae are present in Duodenal loop and upper small intestine. Most cases of Coccidiosis in Poultry are because of this species. The lesions are whitish, oval, or transverse patches in appearance.
4- Eimeriidae brunette
In such coccidiosis, the lesions are found in the lower small intestine, rectum, ceca, and cloaca. Under mild infections, the mucosa is pale and disrupted but lacking in discrete foci, and may be thickened. In severe infections, coagulative necrosis and sloughing of the mucosa occur throughout most of the small intestine.
5- Emeriidae maxima
Coccidial lessions develop in the small intestine, where it causes dilatation and thickening of the wall; petechial hemorrhage; and a reddish, orange, or pink viscous mucous exudate and fluid.
6- Eimeriidae mitis
The location of this parasite is in the lower small intestine. Lesions resemble with moderate infections of E brunette. E mitis can be distinguished from E brunetti by finding small, round oocysts associated with the lesion.
7- Eimeriidae praecox
It infects the upper small intestine, does not cause distinct lesions but may decrease the rate of growth. The oocysts are larger than those of E acervulina and are numerous in affected areas. The intestinal contents may be watery.
E praecox is considered to be of less economic importance in causing Coccidiosis in Poultry than the other species.
Coccidiosis in Turkeys:
There are total seven coccidial species that are responsible for causing Coccidiosis in Turkeys. Out of them only 4 are pathogenic. Those four pathogenic species that are mainly causative agents for Coccidiosis in Turkeys are areE adenoides, E dispersa, E gallopavonis, and E meleagrimitis.  The non-pathogenic are E innocua, E meleagridis, and E subrotunda.
1- Eimeriidae adenoeides and Eimeriidae gallopavonis
These infect the lower ileum, ceca, and rectum. These species often cause mortality. The developmental stages are found in the epithelial cells of the villi and crypts. The affected portion of the intestine may be dilated and have a thickened wall. Thick, creamy material or caseous casts in the gut or excreta may contain enormous numbers of oocysts.
2- Eimeriidae meleagrimitis
The upper and mid-small intestine are the site of infections for Eimeriidae melegrimitis. The lamina propria or deeper tissues may be parasitized, which may result in necrotic enteritis
Coccidiosis in Game Birds:
Whenever you hear the Coccidiosis in Poultry, it doesn’t means, only Chickens are susceptible to this problem. Infact 50% flock of game birds lose because of coccidiosis. The Chinese ringneck pheasant, the chukar partridge, and the bobwhite quail, extremely popular as game birds.
In pheasants, the common species are E phasiani, E colchici, E duodenalis, E tetartooimia, and E Pacifica.
Chukars are infected by two species: E kofoidi and E legionensis.
Bobwhite quail are infected mainly by E lettyae, E dispersa, and E coloni.
Treatment and control of Coccidiosis in Game Birds are similar to that in poultry; however, amprolium is not the first choice of drug in the Treatment of Coccidiosis in Game Birds. Monensin and salinomycin are the approved drugs for quail, and lasalocid and sulfadimethoxine/ormetoprim are the approved drugs for chukars.
Tumblr media
How to Diagnose Coccidiosis in Poultry
There are two ways to diagnose Coccidiosis in Poultry. Either you can examine a live bird or a dead one. It is common sense that for a dead bird, you have to examine the lesions macroscopically and then microscopically to confirm the coccidiosis.
As lesions are a concern, I have already discussed in detail that lesions are present in different parts, and it depends on the causative agent. So, if you are going to inspect the lesions for Coccidiois then you have to see the location of lesions, type of lesions, and its anatomical appearance for a thorough diagnosis of Coccidiosis in Poultry.
For live poultry birds, the best way to diagnose Coccidiosis are signs and symptoms like weight loss, loss of appetite, pale comb, diarrhea, blood in droppings.
To confirm the diagnosis of Coccidiosis in Poultry, the Vet has to take a fecal examination test to assure the presence of unsporulated oocysts.
Tumblr media
Treatment of Coccidiosis in Poultry
Treatment of Coccidiosis in poultry is always a point of debate. Researchers in Veterinary sciences are continuously trying on the prevention and treatment methods of Coccidiosis. Anticoccidial drugs are used in feed to prevent disease and the huge economic loss due to this issue.
The Vet doctors recommend (continue reading)

Marek’s Disease in Chickens | How to treat fowl paralysis?
Tumblr media
Marek’s Disease in Chickens is a highly contagious viral disease that needs to be prevented to avoid huge economic loss in Poultry. If you are new to the poultry sector or didn’t hear the word Marek’s Disease ever before then this is the right place for you because here, I am going to enlist all information about Marek’s Disease in Chickens So let’s get started.
What is Marek’s Disease in Chickens
A highly contagious avian viral infection, characterized by T lymphocytes infiltration in many visceral organs and peripheral nerves. This infiltration leads to T-cell Lymphoma and peripheral nerve enlargement. History of bird, clinical signs, and gross necropsy are the standard criteria for diagnosis. Although no effective treatment is available, vaccines are the best way to prevent Marek’s Disease in Chickens.
What Causes Marek’s Disease in Chickens?
Marek’s Disease in Chickens is caused by a virus commonly known as Mareks Disease Virus ( MDV ). This virus belongs to the subfamily of Alphaherpesvirinae with the genus Mardivirus. There are three species of this genus. These species are known as serotypes or strains. The three serotypes of MDV are:
Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2 (MDV serotype 1)
Gallid alphaherpesvirus 3 (MDV serotype 2)
Meleagrid alphaherpesvirus 1 (turkey herpesvirus, MDV serotype 3)
Out of these, the last one is used for making vaccines for Marek’s disease.
Tumblr media
How Marek’s Disease is Transmitted?
As I mentioned earlier, Marek’s Disease is highly contagious and readily transmissible. The MDV matures in the follicles of the bird’s feathers. After that this virus sheds in the dander or dust. Dander is a flake of a bird’s skin. The MDV can survive in the litter houses of Poultry birds and remain viable during this period.
Chickens become infected with MDV by inhaling infected dust or dander that shed in the form of flakes of infected birds. Once the virus is within the body of birds, the infection continues to spread regardless of the vaccination status of poultry birds.
The virus invades the epithelial cells in the air spaces of the chicken’s lungs. This is the main reason for difficult breathing in Marek’s Disease in Chickens. In addition to the lungs, the MDV spreads to other parts of the body and has a tendency to be transported towards cutaneous sites such as the skin, and feather follicles, etc.
From there, MDV is shed into the environment via scales and feather debris from infected birds. The virus can remain infectious in the environment for up to 8 months. This is how Marek’s Disease transmit in Poultry birds. The transmission is horizontal.
Tumblr media
Symptoms of Marek’s Disease in Chickens
The Symptoms of Mareks Disease in Chickens are highly variable and depend on various factors. As in Mareks disease, there is an enlargement of the peripheral nerves because of lymphocytes infiltration. This lymphoma spreads to different visceral organs. So there are 6 distinct syndromes that are indicators of Marek’s Disease in Chickens. These are
Classical Marek’s Disease or Neurolymphomatosis:
In classical Marek’s disease, the infected birds show some signs and symptoms that are
Enlargement of crop
Paralysis of one or more limbs due to vagus nerve involvement
Difficult breathing
Lesions on lungs, heart, kidneys, and peripheral nerves.
Acute Marek’s Disease:
Acute Mareks syndrome is an epidemic in progress because, after paralysis, the birds die in a short period of time. This type of disease affects 80% of the flock.
Ocular Lymphomatosis:
Lymphoid infiltration into the eyes; causes a change in iris color, pupil shape or size, partial or total blindness.
Cutaneous (skin) form:
Lymphoid infiltration into the skin; causes enlarged feather follicles, often scattered or clustered together, especially on the legs.
In general, the clinical signs and symptoms of Marek’s Disease in Chickens are:
Paralysis of legs, neck, or feathers
Change in eye color to gray
Irregular pupil size
One leg stretched more forward than other
Blindness
Crop takes time to empty
General Weakness
Weight loss
Redness in legs
Enlarged feather follicles
Difficult Breathing
Tumblr media
Diagnosis of Marek’s Disease:
Diagnosis of Marek’s disease in Chickens is not easy; because the lesions formed in such a disease are very much similar to other infective lesions of coccidiosis and E.coli infections. So the best way to diagnose Marek’s Disease is by using History, clinical signs, gross pathology, and histopathology.
Usually, diagnosis is based on enlarged nerves and lymphoid tumors in various visceral organs. There is two poultry disease that needs to be differentiated with Marek’s Disease. These are lymphoid leukosis and Reticuloendotheliosis.
In Marek’s disease, there are no bursal tumors and this factor makes it easier for us to differentiate between lymphoid leukosis and MD. But the presence of bursal tumors does not differentiate Marek disease from Reticuloendotheliosis. The lesions are much similar in both cases.
So the best way to confirm Marek’s disease is the Serological testing and PCR techniques that make it easier to confirm the viral strain. Similarly, Immunohistochemistry can be used to confirm tumors.
Tumblr media
Treatment of Mareks Disease in Chickens:
Unfortunately, there is no cure for chickens that have MD. But vaccines can act as supportive care. The most commonly used vaccines are:
Turkey herpesvirus (HVT, naturally avirulent Meleagrid alphaherpesvirus 1)
SB-1 or 301B/1 (naturally avirulent Gallid alphaherpesvirus 3)
CVI988/Rispens (attenuated Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2)
Veterinary researchers come up with a treatment that is yet under an experimental basis. Some researches showed it an effective treatment against MD but still not authorized.

ASEEL CHICKEN BREED | THINGS NEED TO KNOW BEFORE BUYING ASEEL
Aseel Chicken Breed is the most popular poultry bird in Pakistan. But if we look back at the history of this breed then it generally originates from the Indian subcontinent. This breed is famous in Punjab of Pakistan, and in Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, etc. In short, this breed is common throughout Southeast Asia as a Thai Gamer.
If you don’t know about this poultry breed then don’t worry we are going to enlist every detail about Aseel Chicken Breed that you must need to know before buying it. So, Let’s dive into the article.
Information of Aseel Chicken Breed:
As I mentioned earlier, Aseel Chicken Breed is common throughout Southeast Asia as a game bird. But what actually does it means? Actually, people of South Asia used this chicken breed in fighting competitions and also for gambling. It’s the main reason for its popularity. But there are many other characteristics that make Aseel Chicken Breed distinguish from others. Let’s discuss it one by one.
Fighter Bird:
Aseel Chicken Breed is actually a fighter bird because people used it for cockfighting. This breed of chicken is known as a fighting cock. This chicken breed is mostly known for its high stamina, pugnacity, and fighting abilities.  The most popular varieties of aseel are Reza (light red), Teekar (brown), Chitta (black and white silver), Kagar (black), and Peela (golden-red).
Tumblr media
Aseel Chicken Breed is a Layer or Broiler?
This is one of the most asked questions regarding aseel. Is Aseel Chicken Breed a Layer or Broiler? Aseel is not for eggs because this chicken breed is very poor in eggs production. These hens are not good layers but are excellent sitters. Laying depends on the Aseel variety, the small Aseels are known to be very poor layers, sometimes laying just 6 eggs a year, whereas larger Aseels can lay around 40 eggs a year. So this chicken breed is mainly used for meat purposes. But as I mentioned earlier some people just use it for cockfighting.
If you are looking for layers that lay a lot of eggs then must check out the best chicken breeds that will lay a lot of eggs for you.
Tumblr media
Body Weight of Aseel Chicken Breed :
It has a long and slender face that is not covered with a feather, compact eyes, a long neck, and a small tail and has strong and straight legs.  The cocks have 4-5 kg and the hen have 3-4kg, cockerels have 3.5-4.5kg and pullets have 2.5-3.5 kg standard weight.
History of Aseel Chicken Breed:
As I mentioned earlier, this chicken breed was used as a cock fighter because of its high stamina and pugnacity. The Aseel Chicken Breed is a common breed in Pakistan and in Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and also West Bengal.
It is considered the oldest chicken breed in the fighting world. The word Aseel is derived from an Arabic word that means “purebred.”
If we talk about India, then most of the Aseel is found in the districts of Andhra Pradesh and some districts of Odisha. This breed once got popular in Holland but its popularity declined with time.
Tumblr media
Feed for Aseel Chicken Breed:
The feed for Aseel Chicken Breed must contain the following ingredients:
Protein:
Protein is very necessary for the proper growth and the development of every chicken breed. Keep in mind that for starters i.e For chicks of Aseel, the protein should be at least 10-15% in the diet. Because it helps the chicks to grow faster and protect them from the early problems of the chick.
Carbohydrates:
Carbohydrates are an important source of energy. It helps to maintain the body temperature of aseel and helps to mix body fat. But don’t exceed the level of carb in the diet by more than 10% because it will results in digestibility issues.
Water:
For the starter i.e. the first water of chick should include 1/4th cup of sugar and 1 teaspoon of Terramycin/gallon. The second water includes 1 teaspoon of Terramycin and then normal water is given. Provide one quart of water to every four chickens. Water must be fresh and clean.
Tumblr media
Care of Aseel Chicken Breed:
In order to make your breed healthier the following care is necessary:
Housing System:
Do you like to live in a dirty place? Definitely, no one wants to live. In the same way, the housing system has a very major impact on the growth and production of your chicken breeds. So, for a better housing system you have to take down the following instructions:
The Shelter in which you are going to put your chickens must be clean and dry.
It must be blowy or windy.
The light must come in the shelter because light has very important role in egg production.
The bedding of the shelter must be covered with some straw because the toes of chicks are very week in the start and if you kept them on a hard floor then it will cause sprayed leg problems or other chick problems.
The bedding of the shelter should not be organic, unless the birds will eat it.
The birds have access to outdoor because they like normal behaviour of dust bathing etc.
The presence of perches is also the best choice for good housing.
Fresh water supply must be there.
It must have 24 hours electricity supply. The chicken shelter must be away from the industrial and urban area because the fertilizer of chicken will pollute the environment and causes flies’ problem.

(Bird flu:
This is a very dangerous disease that can destroy all the flock within days. This problem is caused by influenza and the mortality rate is 100%. This problem spread from one bird to another and ultimately the whole shed will be under this problem. The cause of transmission is the feeding equipment and poor water supply systems.
Symptoms:
laziness in birds
loss of appetite,
comb color turn yellow,
less egg production and ultimately death.
Prevention:
Prevention includes Stop taking anything inside or outside from the chicken farm. Separate shoes will be used inside the farm.
Make the hole and add medicine in mentioned amount so that before entering the farm dip your foot in the treated water. Germ destroyers such as Qualitol should be sprayed around the farm.
Cautions during disease:
Because this disease affects the human, wear proper clothes and gloves before picking the diseased chickens. Burn or bury the dead and influenced chickens in the soil. Meat can be cooked at 700 C as it kills the infection and is used for eating.
Deficiency of Vitamin A:
The symptoms of this disease are beak and legs get fainted yellow and shaking head. Treatment: Add more amount of Vitamin A to the feed and gave them green feed.
Chicken Pox:
It is a contagious disease and it can be spread at any age of the bird. The symptoms are sores on a comb, around eyes and ears. Treatment: Homeopathic medicine of antimonium torterix @5ml/100 birds is given to cure chickenpox.
Coccidiosis:
Coccidiosis in Poultry is an intestinal disease that is caused by a protozoan ( coccidia ) that attaches itself to the intestinal lining and thus damages the wall of the gut leading to bleeding that can be seen in the droppings of birds.
Cause:
It is a parasitic disease that is caused by coccidian protozoan. The disease is mainly caused to the chick having an age between 3-10 weeks. It also affects the adult ones.
Symptoms:
Lethargic chickens with not easy to move around
Plae color comb and skin also appears yellowish
loss of appetite
Ruffled feathers
The declining growth rate in baby chicks
Weight loss

CHICKEN BREEDS IN PAKISTAN | BEST FOR POULTRY BUSINESS!
Tumblr media
There are hundreds of Chicken Breeds in Pakistan and also around the world. The great variations in chicken breeds all over the world are because of geographical distribution. Now, how all these breeds are distinguishable? The answer is very simple: There are various ways to classify Chicken Breeds like
The physical traits used to distinguish chicken breeds are size, comb type, skin color, number of toes, amount of feathering, egg color, and most importantly the place of origin. But the most common way of classification is on the following types
Origin Base
On the basis of egg production
Meat Producing Breeds
There are some chicken breeds that are known as hybrid breeds (dual-purpose breeds ). Dual-purpose means those breeds that are good at both, egg as well as meat productions. In this article, we will enlist the Poultry Breeds in Pakistan on the above basis.
Chicken Breeds in Pakistan on the origin basis:
On the basis of origin 5 types of Chicken breeds are known in Pakistan. These are:
1- Aseel or Asil
2- Sindhi
3- Golden Misri
4- Desi
5- Lyallpur Silver Black
1- Assel:
Aseel Chicken Breed is the most popular poultry bird in Pakistan. But if we look back at the history of this breed then it generally originates from the Indian subcontinent. This breed is famous in Punjab, Pakistan, and in Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, etc. In short, this breed is common throughout Southeast Asia as a Thai gamer.
Asil is not for eggs because this chicken breed is very poor in egg production. The hens are not good layers but are excellent sitters. Laying depends on the Asil variety, the small Asil are known to be very poor layers, sometimes laying just 6 eggs a year, whereas larger Asil can lay around 40 eggs a year. So this chicken breed is mainly used for meat purposes as well as for cockfighting.
Tumblr media
2- Sindhi :
As I mentioned earlier, Chicken Breeds are simply named after the area where they are bred. If we talk about Aseel then there are various varieties of Aseel on the basis of its origin. The name Sindhi is referring to that type of Assel bird that is native to Sindh province in Pakistan.
Sindhi Breeds are noted as being tall, heavy, and good at fighting, so they are bred mainly for the cockpit. These Aseels are characterized by a muscular but compact body, broad shoulders, wings carried against the body, short and hard feathers, drooping tails, a large curved beak similar to that of an eagle, pea comb, and no wattles.
Tumblr media
3/4- Golden Misri and Desi:
There is a lot of controversy regarding the Golden misri and the desi chicken breed. In this article, I will solve all confusion about these breeds. Most people think that golden misri and desi chicken are similar but it is not true there are some differences between these two breeds. Let’s discuss it one by one.
Difference Between Golden Misri and Desi Chicken Breed in PakistanBrooding Behaviour:
Golden misri is not a good sitter i.e they are not brooding hens whereas the desi hen is brooding.
Comb and Wattle:
Golden misri has a large comb and wattle, the desi hen lacks it
Maturity age:
Maturity age means when hens lay eggs. Golden misri usually mature in (Continue Reading)

How to Increase the Eggs Production in Poultry | Best Way to Boost Layer farming Business
Eggs Production depends upon the bird’s age, breed, and molting period. Under ideal conditions, it takes a chicken about 25 hours to produce one egg.   Certain chicken breeds were bred to reduce the demonstration of brooding behavior and increase laying. If a poultry keeper wants to keep chicken for eggs, it is important to choose a chicken breed that demonstrates high levels of egg production.
Now we are going to enlist some important factors that need to be improved if you are really serious about Eggs Production.
Reducing Brooding Behaviour To Improve Eggs Production
To improve Eggs Production, brooding behavior must be reduced. When an egg-laying hen demonstrates brooding behavior, the hen can be separated from the rest of the flock and placed in a henhouse without a nest. In this way, sitting on a nest is discouraged.
Poultry scientist Dan L. Cunningham at the University of Georgia says that
“Removing the hens from visual and physical stimulation provided by nest and nesting material will help discourage this behavior. In addition, it will help prevent producing hens from observing and adopting the broody behavior of their flock mates. By doing so one can see a significant increase in Eggs Production. The hens should be held in this isolation pen for seven to 10 days before moving them back to the laying pen.”
Tumblr media
Increase The Duration of Light To Boost Eggs Production
Longer days, or extended periods of light, boost Eggs Production. Hens naturally lay more eggs during seasons with longer days. As the days shorten, hens begin to show brooding behavior. During these shorter days, after the natural breeding season, chickens begin to molt their feathers. Since molting requires a lot of energy, chickens decrease their production of eggs. To maintain normal eggs production, chickens require around 12-14 hours of light, which can be provided artificially when days naturally become shorter.
Tumblr media
Role of Diet in Eggs Production
A pullet (a female chicken less than one year old). The pullet that is going to become an egg-laying hen should have a diet that consists of 12-16% protein. Adult egg-laying hens should have a diet high in calcium and minerals. Nutritional diseases can occur in egg-laying hens if they aren’t provided with an adequate diet.
Poultry scientist Claudia Dunkley at the University of Georgia says that
“Rickets, CLF [cage layer fatigue], and FLS [fatty liver syndrome] are nutritional diseases that affect laying hens and can account for a high percentage of the flock mortality. The laying hens’ diet is specifically formulated to be nutritionally complete. However, the occurrences of these diseases are prevalent especially in hens in high production and the mortality rate in flocks can be high.”
Tumblr media
Eggs Collection:
Eggs should be collected daily as leaving eggs in a nest box can encourage chickens to go broody. Hens may also peck or eat eggs that are left, and once they have acquired this habit it is very hard to change. Artificial light used in the coop will encourage hens to lay for longer in winter.
Why Eggs Should be Collected Daily?
Eggs that are left in the nesting boxes can become cracked, pooped on, dirty, or simply not safe to eat. If you want to know the difference between fresh and old eggs then you must have to check out the best way to check whether an egg is fresh or rotten at home by clicking the link below.
How to check whether an egg is fresh and rotten at home
Tumblr media
Increase Eggs Production by Golf ball Trick:
Another trick to increase Eggs Production is to place a golf ball or ceramic egg in the nest box to encourage hens to lay in the nest. This is a very amazing trick and has been used for many decades in the poultry farming sector.
If you want to test this trick then leave the golf balls in the nesting box just before when your chickens are going to lay just as a reminder to them. It significantly improves the production of eggs in a limited value.
Tumblr media
Reduce the Stress in Chicken Birds
Stress can significantly decrease Eggs Production. What did this stress mean? Actually, this means environmental stress like heat, cold, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to provide your laying hens with high-quality feed, vitamin/electrolyte products in the drinking water, or any tonic types of products that help reduce stress.
Tumblr media
Free Range Your Chickens
Especially in winter, it is highly advisable to provide your chickens with free-range, so as to get enough daylight exposure. Exposure to natural daylight helps keep those hormones pumping and ranging gives chickens an opportunity to exercise, which also improves Eggs Production.
Tumblr media
Maintain Strict Biosecurity
There are many ways through which your poultry birds get contaminated. Especially in cage-free systems, there are greater chances of disease transmission within a flock due to increased bird movement, bird-to-bird contact, and exposure to litter.
Some poultry diseases such as coccidiosis and necrotic enteritis will become more evident along with other zoonotic pathogens such as E.coli and Salmonella etc.
So it is important to maintain strict biosecurity measures and keep the litter dry to lower the risk of disease and other health issues.

ROTTEN EGGS VS FRESH EGGS| HOW YOU CAN CHECK WHETHER AN EGG IS FRESH OR ROTTEN AT HOME
Rotten Eggs vs Fresh Eggs are always the point of debate. Let’s clear this doubt, that what makes Rotten Eggs different from Fresh Eggs. Stay tuned with us, because in this article we will also discuss, how you can check which egg is fresh and which one is rotted at home.
The egg is a very important protein source. Did you ever notice that Rotten eggs can spoil your health if not properly cooked? So in this article, we are going to learn some amazing tricks that how you can check whether an egg is fresh or rotten at home. Let’s dive into the article!
Tip 1: Candle Your Eggs
Before packing eggs in the poultry industry, the best way to assess the quality of eggs is by candling. This method is also used to evaluate the developmental phases of a chick in a fertilized egg. Although on an industrial scale it is done by using specialized equipment it can also be done at home if you are willing to learn.
Objective:
Check eggshells for any defects before using home-laid eggs. Eggs with defective shells should not be consumed without first cooking, as bacteria may have penetrated the shell wall. Defects include softshells, hairline cracks, pimples, or pinholes. A homemade candling device is the best way to check
This homemade candling device is constructed from a torch and a paper roll. It provides a quick way to check shell quality. Remove any external excreta with a stiff brush. An old toothbrush makes an ideal tool.
Procedure:
This method of checking the quality of eggs is called “candling” because in this procedure we need a small source of luminous light. In the past, people make use of candles that’s why it is called so. Now You’ll need a dark room and a small, bright source of light. Yet it is probably more effective to use a small flashlight or reading light instead.
Hold the light source up to the large end of the egg. Then, tilt the egg and turn it quickly from left to right. If done correctly, the contents of the egg should be illuminated.
This allows you to see whether the egg’s air cell is small or large.
Results:
Results are clear between Rotten Eggs vs Fresh Eggs. As in a very fresh egg, the air cell should be thinner than 1/8 inch, or 3.175 mm. As the egg ages, gasses replace water lost through evaporation, and the air pocket will get larger.
You can also rotate the eggs slowly in front of a torch or candle to check how frim are the contents i.e yolk and white portion
“Little or no movement is the indication of fresh egg“
Tumblr media
Tip 2: Floating Method For Rotten eggs vs Fresh Eggs
Rotten Eggs vs Fresh Eggs can also be checked by the floating method. This is also a common method for determining the age of a fertilized egg that is developing into a chick.
Objective:
The float test is one of the most popular methods for checking whether an egg is good or bad.
Procedure:
You need a tank of water i.e bowl of water. Place both eggs in the bowl of water if you are going to evaluate between Rotten Eggs vs Fresh Eggs. If you are not distinguishing the eggs or simply want to check the one single egg then also gently set your egg into a bowl or bucket of water.
Results:
Fresh eggs will sink to the bottom of a bowl of water, whereas Rotten eggs will float. This is because as an egg age, the small air pocket inside it grows larger as water is released and replaced by air. If the air pocket becomes large enough, the egg may float.
Tumblr media
Tip 3: Visual Checking for Rotten Eggs vs Fresh Eggs
God has gifted to some senses that are the best way to inspect anything like nose ears, tongue, and eyes, etc. Out of these your eyes are a valuable tool for telling whether an egg is good or bad.
Objective:
Checking the egg shells because crack can be an indication of bacteria inside and egg.
Procedure:
Check eggshells for any defects before using home-laid eggs. Eggs with defective shells should not be consumed without first cooking, as bacteria may have penetrated the shell wall. Defects include softshells, hairline cracks, pimples, or pinholes.
Results:
Sliminess or cracks can indicate (Continue Reading)

How Chicken Eggs Get Fertilized? First of all, you must know that what is fertilization? If we sum up the fertilization process in one line then we can say ” A process in which male sperm combine with female egg”. This is the normal reproductive process that takes place in all animals.
So one thing that got cleared from the definition of fertilization is that, for an egg to be fertilized, male sperm is needed!. The same is the case with chickens. Normally a hen produces an egg every day but this egg is not fertilized as soon as it didn’t mate with a rooster. In simple words, if you have chickens in your backyard but you don’t have any roosters then all of your chicken eggs are infertile.
But if you have roosters in the poultry flocks then there are 90% chances that the eggs of chicken are fertilized. Some hens are broody and they sit on their eggs for the next 21 days to complete the embryonic development of the chick. But there are some hens that are not good sitters so in this case, we have to use an incubator to provide the optimum temperature to the developing embryo so that eggs hatch to chicks.
So, in this way, chicken eggs got fertilized

When a Rooster and Hen mate, the sperm of a rooster travels down the oviduct and penetrates the egg of a chicken. It leads to the development of an embryo inside the yolk. Actually, what happens, is first of there is a cleavage formation on the yolk which is called discoidal cleavage.
This cleavage leads to the formation of blastoderm which we can see after cracking a fertilized egg. This blastoderm is somewhat looked like a bull shape eye ( as people often used this word ).
You can also check the fertility of chicken eggs by candling. Candling is also the best way to check out fresh eggs from old eggs.
When it comes to breeding chickens, you have to separate the breeding hens from unwanted roosters for 3 weeks in order to make sure they don't retain sperm from any of the unwanted boys.
You can tell when they're ready by checking the eggs for fertilization by cracking them open and inspecting the germinal disc. In an unfertilized egg it's just a little cloudy spot on the surface of the yolk. In a fertilized egg it forms a distinct white "bullseye" on the surface of the yolk.
Here's an image of an egg I just collected from my breeding pen girls, it is unfertilized (yay!)
Tumblr media
See this spot here? That's the disc.
Tumblr media
Now compare it to an egg from the main flock, which is fertilized!
Tumblr media
See the discs?
Tumblr media
This means I can go ahead and put my breeding boy in with the mahogany girls now, and I'll know for sure that any chicks I hatch from them will be fathered by Daffodil.

How do Chicken Mates: Rooster Mating Injuries
How do Chicken Mates? Is there any love between a hen and rooster? Don’t be so confused. Let’s discuss it, In the matting process of Chickens, the sperm of the rooster travel down to the oviduct and eventually fuses with the egg to make it fertilized. There is no romance in chickens, infact it can be ferocious for both.
The male simply mounts the hen from the back, gripping onto her side with his spurs and using his beak to hold onto the feathers on the back of her neck.
This process occurs in seconds leaving both the parties injured especially the hens.
So if you have poultry birds in your backyard then it is your duty to protect them from injuries. Most farm owners don’t keep roosters with hens often if they do then they recommend hens saddle devices to use.
Tumblr media
Are Chicken Eggs Fertilized Every time When a Rooster Matted a Hen?
The answer is very simple: Chicken eggs are not always fertile after mating with a rooster. Normally it takes 8-10days for a hen to become fertile because it takes around 8 to 10 days for a sperm to reach the oviduct where an egg is formed.
Another interesting fact is that a hen will remain fertile for the next 2 weeks after mating with a rooster ( even if she does not mate again).
Not all roosters have sperm but there are some high-quality breeds of chicken that are well adapted to undergo fertilization.
Tumblr media
Can a Hen Lay Eggs Without a Rooster?
Yes! a hen can lay eggs without a rooster but all these eggs will be infertile. Normally a healthy hen lay about the age of 16-21 weeks with an interval of 24 hours. Some hens lay fewer eggs than others. So, if you want to check out what are the best egg-laying hens then you can check out with just one click below.
